Alekis Nifty Ships

Aleki's Nifty Ships adds two fully crewed watercraft to Minecraft: the compact, oar-powered Rowboat for river travel and coastal runs, and the wind-driven Sloop for open-ocean voyages and naval combat. Both vessels are built through a multiblock construction system, support on-deck storage and utility blocks, and carry multiple passengers at once. The Sloop goes further with a genuine wind and sail system requiring you to read wind direction and trim your sheets accordingly, six Cannon ports for broadside combat, and a hull-sinking animation that sends cargo floating to the surface when the ship goes down. World-generated Unfinished Ship structures in Beach and River biomes provide a head start on materials. The mod scales naturally from solo survival sailing to large multiplayer crews, where one player holds the helm, others man the Cannons, and someone keeps a banner flying from the masthead.

Getting Started with Aleki's Nifty Ships

Both ships are built using a multiblock construction system. You place Shipwright's Scaffolding blocks in the correct hull pattern, fill each frame with wooden planks, and add iron fittings to trigger assembly.

An unfinished Ship structure can be found along beaches, which can save some time in this mod. Check the chests nearby for more materials

The system feels intimidating at first, but once you see the pattern, it clicks immediately. New players who discover an Unfinished Ship structure in the world often use it to skip straight to the filling and fitting stage.

1

Craft Shipwright's Scaffolding

Shipwright's Scaffolding comes in two shapes: Sloped and Flat. Sloped Scaffolding forms the curved bow and sides of the hull. Flat Scaffolding creates the deck and center sections.

It is important that you place the flat and sloped scaffolding in the correct positions. This mod is relatively finicky if done incorrectly

Craft three Flat pieces from a single row of three Scaffolding blocks, or five Sloped pieces from a diagonal Scaffolding pattern. The Rowboat needs six Sloped pieces, while the Sloop needs 18 Sloped and six Flat. Stock up before you start building.

The Large Ship requires this exact dimension to be assembled

The exact dimensions for the large ship are to start with a 3x2 flat scaffolding, with sloped scaffolding all around, and a pointed nose that protrudes two blocks out.

2

Craft the Iron Fittings

Rowboats require two Oarlocks and two Oars to function. Oarlocks mount on the sides of the hull and hold the Oars in place. Large Ships require four Cleats and one Anchor in addition to the scaffolding.

Place the Iron Cleats opposite where they exist on the other side if rebuilding an unfinished structure

Craft these from iron before you start placing your hull, since the construction process will ask for them partway through. Having everything ready beforehand prevents a frustrating pause mid-build.

Place the Cleats on the corners of the structure.

For the large ship, place the Iron Cleats on the 4 corners, and the ship should transform more into a nice ship shape if done correctly

Finish assembling your boat, then launch it

Once onto this step, you should see a blue hammer icon in various sectors of the ship, with a material on it. Once those materials have been gathered, right-click the ship, and then the next ones should appear. Repeat until completed.

The Blue hammer moves around the ship as you progress. There are multiple stages where you will need Planks, stripped wood, wool, fences, and a Nifty mod item

To get the Boats into the water, attach a Lead to a Cleat and drag the hull toward the water, or place a Water Source block near the base and let it wash in. Either method works on its own without extra help.

Sloop Compartments and Cannon Slots

The Sloop has 13 compartments in two areas: six hold slots below deck and seven deck slots across the sides and stern. The hold slots are block-only and ideal for storage containers and crafting stations.

Under the middle section, you can place more functional blocks such as more chests, furnaces, and crafting tables

The six side deck slots can hold either Cannons or compatible blocks. The stern slot next to the helm is block-only and cannot mount a Cannon. A helmsman's seat at the stern gives the pilot control of the rudder and sails. The Driving position is the Back Right Seat.

There are two sails you can use; the front sail can be easily missed

Up to 25 passengers can ride the Sloop at once. Non-helm crew members can walk freely around the deck when the Mainsail is lowered, which is important for combat roles like loading Cannons and adjusting rigging. The ship imposes a passenger size limit, so large mobs like the Warden, camels, and ravagers cannot be placed in compartment slots regardless of available space.

Sailing and Wind Navigation

Sailing the Sloop introduces a genuine wind system to Minecraft. The wind has a direction and speed that change over time, and your sails only generate thrust when angled correctly relative to the wind.

Players who approach it like a vanilla boat will be confused at first. Once you understand the two gauges on your screen, the sailing feels natural and deeply satisfying to master.

The Wind Gauges

Two meters appear to the left of your hotbar while seated at the helm. The red-line meter shows the absolute compass direction the wind is coming from.

The second meter, with a ship icon and a colored spinning arrow, shows wind direction relative to your current heading. Use this ship-relative meter to position your sails: you want the boom perpendicular to the incoming wind for maximum drive whenever possible.

Sailing Techniques

Running downwind is the fastest point of sail. Push the boom fully out so the sail is nearly perpendicular to the wind direction and you will hit top speed quickly.

A beam reach, with wind coming from directly abeam, is nearly as fast and easier to hold course on. Both of these angles cover ground efficiently and are the best choices for long ocean crossings with good weather.

Sailing directly into the wind is impossible. Point too far upwind and the sails start flapping, speed drops to zero, and the ship stalls.

To reach an upwind destination, use the technique called beating: sail as close to the wind as you can without flapping, then tack to the other side and zigzag toward the target. It takes longer but is the only way to make upwind progress in this mod.

Cannons and Naval Combat

The Sloop supports up to six Cannons, three on each broadside. Each Cannon fires a Cannonball that explodes on impact, dealing area damage and breaking blocks within the blast radiu

A coordinated broadside from three Cannons at once can devastate an enemy vessel. Rowboats have relatively low hull health and go down quickly; Sloops have four times the durability and can sustain a much longer engagement before sinking.

Crafting Cannons and Cannonballs

A Cannon requires three Iron Blocks, two Wood Slabs, and two Iron Nuggets in a shaped crafting recipe. Deploy the Cannon item by right-clicking a surface or water to place it as a working entity, then move it to a side slot on the Sloop.

Cannonballs are inexpensive: one Iron Ingot, one sheet of Paper, and one Gunpowder crafted shapeless. They stack up to 16, so pack several stacks for any voyage that expects combat.

Loading and Firing

Right-click a deployed Cannon while holding a Cannonball to load it. Once loaded, right-click with a Flint and Steel to light the fuse. The fuse burns for two seconds before the Cannon fires automatically.

Right-click without crouching to aim the barrel upward; right-click while crouching to aim it downward. Cannons have a short cooldown after firing, so pre-load all Cannons before an engagement for the most sustained fire.

Crew Combat and Broadsides

Crewed combat is where the Sloop truly shines. Assign one player to the helm, two or three players to load and fire the side Cannons, and optionally one player to manage sails and handle hull repairs. Use Jibsail-only "battle sails," with the Mainsail lowered, for a controlled combat speed that lets all non-helm crew walk freely, access any deck compartment, and coordinate firing without getting locked in position.

When a Sloop sinks from Cannon fire, it triggers the sinking animation: the hull slowly submerges while Barrels float to the surface and storage contents become accessible. Players can right-click a floating Barrel to ride it, and Shift+right-click to open it and take the items inside, making server piracy a genuine mechanic. A Sloop destroyed by melee instead of Cannons simply drops items without the sinking sequence.

The Rowboat

The Rowboat is the starter vessel and the best choice for river travel, island hopping, and transport runs.

Similar to the Large Ship, it must be assembled in a strict layout or it will not progress to the next stage

It carries six passengers, including the helmsman, moves under manual Oar power, and supports several utility blocks on deck. It does not mount Cannons and has no Anchor, so it is not suited for combat or long ocean crossings.

Repairing Your Rowboat

Rowboats accumulate damage and show increasingly cracked hull textures as durability drops. Look at any section of the hull without an active interaction prompt and a Hammer icon appears.

Right-click while holding planks to repair the hull, consuming one plank per repair action. Keep a stack of planks in your inventory whenever you set sail, since a Rowboat has relatively low hull health compared to a Sloop.

Ship Customization

Both ships support visual customization through dyes, name tags, and banners. The Sloop receives 16 distinct hull designs rather than simple recolors, with each dye producing a unique painted pattern.

The black design features a pirate skull motif, the yellow mimics an 18th-century warship, and the cyan option creates a multicolored rainbow hull. Rowboats receive a solid color matching the dye used.

Painting the Hull and Sails

Right-click the side of any ship while holding a Dye to apply that color scheme. The dye is consumed on use.

Sloop sails can be dyed independently by right-clicking them directly with a Dye, letting you choose separate colors for the Mainsail and Jibsail. On multiplayer servers, a brightly painted ship is visible from a long distance, which can be a tactical disadvantage worth weighing before choosing a neon paint scheme.

Naming Your Ship

Rename a Name Tag at an Anvil, then right-click the ship with the named tag to apply it. A nameplate appears on the bow opposite the Anchor and a second plate on the stern, both displaying the ship's name. Naming a black-painted Sloop "The Black Pearl" unlocks a hidden advancement as a nod to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Flags, Banners, and Mast Climbing

Hold Space while standing near the mast to climb to the top. From there, right-click the masthead with any Banner to display a flag while the ship is underway. Sitting at the top of a moving Sloop's mast while a crewmate holds the helm is one of the mod's most memorable experiences on a server.

Banners Cannot Be Removed

Once a Banner is placed on the mast, it cannot be removed. Design your flag at a Loom before climbing, since the choice is permanent once attached.

Ice-Breaking Upgrade

The Sloop can be upgraded to break ice by right-clicking the hull while holding an Iron Block. Once installed, the bow destroys Ice and Frosted Ice on contact, letting you sail through frozen oceans without stopping to clear a path.

Permanent Upgrade

The ice-breaking upgrade cannot be removed once installed. It opens up polar routes unavailable to a standard hull, so weigh the choice carefully before applying it.

Unfinished Sloop and the Sloop Hut

Unfinished Sloops generate in Beach biomes only and come in two variants: a basic unfinished hull and the Sloop Hut, which adds a small dock structure around the site. The Sloop Hut is the more valuable find. Its Chest always contains an Anchor, Bread, and Cannonballs, and may also include Cleats, Flint and Steel, Scaffolding, and Planks, plus a rare chance at the "Pirate Crafting" Music Disc by Captain Thrack, which cannot be crafted.

Tips for Success

Always carry a stack of planks while sailing. Both ships take damage from hits and need planks to repair. Visible hull cracks signal that repair is overdue.

One stack is a minimum for short runs; two stacks is comfortable when combat is possible. Players who run out of planks mid-voyage often end up watching their ship slowly crack apart while rowing toward shore.

Lower the Mainsail before approaching shore. One of the most common frustrations new Sloop captains share is crashing into a beach at full sail because they could not reach the sail toggle in time from the helm.

Lower the Mainsail well before your destination and drift in slowly on the Jibsail alone, which gives a much more manageable approach speed. Dropping Anchor in shallow water provides the cleanest stop when precision matters.

Use Jibsail-only "battle sails" for crewed combat. Players who discover this mode unlock the best multiplayer experience the mod offers.

With only the Jibsail raised, the ship moves at a controlled pace while all non-helm crew walk freely around the deck, load Cannons, adjust rigging, and even leap between ships during close encounters. Full Mainsail locks everyone to positions and makes coordinating a crew during a fight nearly impossible.

Plan your route around the wind, not against it. Long ocean crossings are fastest when you sail at a beam reach or downwind rather than beating upwind the entire way.

Check the wind meter before departure and consider sailing a longer route that keeps your sails full throughout. The speed difference between a downwind run and a slow upwind beat is dramatic enough to change which route actually arrives faster.

Tie both bow Cleats when docking the Sloop. Tying only one Lead to a fence post keeps the ship loosely moored but allows it to swing sideways and block loading access.

Securing a Lead to both the port and starboard forward Cleats and tying each to separate fence posts snaps the ship into perfect alignment with the dock. The hull straightens and locks in place, making cargo loading and passenger transfers much cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place a Cannon on a Rowboat?

No. Cannons can only be placed in the six side deck slots of the Sloop. The Rowboat has no cannon-compatible compartments at all. If you want naval combat capability, you need to build a Sloop.

Why does my Sloop drift and spin when I step away from the helm?

Wind pushes the sails whether or not someone is at the helm. Without a helmsman applying rudder input, the ship follows the wind and drifts unpredictably. If you need to leave the helm while underway, lower the Mainsail first and sail on the Jibsail alone. You still move, but the reduced sail area is much easier to manage without constant steering corrections.

How do I launch a Sloop by myself without a crew?

Build as close to the waterline as possible. Attach a Lead to one of the Cleats and drag the hull toward the water by walking away while holding the lead, or use a Water Bucket cascade from above to wash the hull into the sea. Building directly on a beach slope is the most common solo approach, since the ship only needs a short Lead drag to float once the tide is nearby.

Can I remove a Banner from the mast after placing it?

No. Banners cannot be removed from the mast once placed. This is a current limitation of the mod. Design your flag at a Loom before climbing the mast, since the choice is permanent once attached.

What happens to items on a Sloop when it sinks?

When a Sloop is sunk by Cannon fire, the hull slowly submerges while Barrels and Chests from deck compartments float to the surface. Players can right-click a floating Barrel to sit inside it, and Shift+right-click to open the contents and retrieve items. This makes piracy a real server mechanic: sink a player's ship and you can loot the cargo before it despawns.
