Friends and Foes is a Minecraft mod that brings back beloved mobs from past Minecraft Live mob votes. This comprehensive guide introduces all nine unique creatures added by the mod, from helpful companions to challenging bosses.
The mod divides its mobs into three distinct categories. Friendly mobs like the Glare, Moobloom, Crab, and Rascal offer unique abilities and interactions that enhance your survival experience. Utility golems including the Copper Golem and Tuff Golem provide automation and decorative functionality. Hostile mobs such as the Iceologer, Illusioner, and Wildfire present new combat challenges with exclusive rewards.
Each mob features distinct behaviors, spawn conditions, and drops that integrate seamlessly into the vanilla Minecraft experience. Whether you're seeking a darkness-detecting companion, a randomizer for your redstone builds, or epic boss battles in the Nether, Friends and Foes delivers content for every playstyle.
Friendly Mobs
The friendly mobs in Friends and Foes provide helpful abilities and engaging interactions. These peaceful creatures can be tamed, bred, or interacted with to unlock unique gameplay mechanics.
Glare
The Glare is a small flying mob that spawns naturally in Lush Caves. This grumpy creature becomes agitated when it detects darkness, making it an excellent tool for identifying areas where hostile mobs can spawn. The Glare grumbles and shakes when the light level drops below 5, alerting you to dangerous dark spots in your base or caves.

Taming a Glare requires feeding it Glow Berries, its favorite food. Once tamed, the Glare follows you around and actively seeks out dark areas, flying toward them and displaying its signature grumpy behavior. This makes it invaluable for mob-proofing large builds or cave systems.
When defeated, Glares drop 0-2 Glow Berries. The Looting enchantment increases the quantity dropped by 0-1 per level, making Looting III provide up to 5 Glow Berries per Glare.
Find a Glare in a Lush Cave biome. Hold Glow Berries in your hand and approach the Glare. Right-click on the Glare with the Glow Berries to feed it. Hearts will appear when the taming is successful. The tamed Glare will now follow you and detect dark areas automatically.
Moobloom
The Moobloom is a flower-covered variant of the Cow that spawns in Flower Forest and Meadow biomes. Covered in vibrant yellow buttercups, this peaceful mob brings natural beauty wherever it roams. As it walks, the Moobloom periodically plants Buttercup flowers on grass blocks, creating colorful trails across the landscape.

You can shear a Moobloom with Shears to collect the Buttercups growing on its back. However, shearing transforms the Moobloom into a regular Cow permanently. Buttercups can be crafted into Yellow Dye. Each Moobloom awards 1 to 6 Buttercups.
Mooblooms drop the same items as regular Cows when killed. They drop 0-2 Leather and 1-3 Raw Beef, which becomes Cooked Beef if the Moobloom is on fire or killed with a Fire Aspect weapon. The Looting enchantment increases both drops by 0-1 per level.

Crab
Crabs are small coastal creatures that spawn on Beach and Mangrove Swamp biomes. These scuttling mobs add life to shorelines and can lay Crab Eggs on sand blocks. Crabs are passive and will not attack players under any circumstances.

When killed, Crabs always drop exactly 1 Crab Claw. The Crab Claw is a unique item that grants the Reach effect when brewed, increasing your block interaction and entity reach distance. This makes building and mining more convenient by extending how far you can place or break blocks.
The Reach effect from Crab Claws is particularly useful for bridge building, placing blocks in hard-to-reach spots, and combat situations where you need extended melee range. Keep a Crab Claw in your hotbar for tasks requiring precision placement.
Rascal
The Rascal is a mischievous mob that spawns deep underground in caves and abandoned mineshafts. Unlike other mobs, the Rascal does not drop items when killed. Instead, it engages players in a hide-and-seek minigame where finding it three times yields valuable rewards.

When you encounter a Rascal, it will disappear and hide nearby. You must locate it two more times, (by left-clicking it) with the Rascal hiding in different spots each time. After finding it three times successfully, the Rascal rewards you with enchanted tools, enchanted books, or other valuable items.
The Rascal's rewards scale with the difficulty of your world and the depth at which you find it. Deeper caves tend to yield better enchanted items. This makes exploring deep underground caves particularly rewarding when a Rascal spawns.
Round 1: Find the Rascal in the cave. It will nod and then disappear.
Round 2: Search the surrounding area for the Rascal's new hiding spot. It stays within a limited range of where you first found it.
Round 3: Locate the Rascal one final time. Upon the third discovery, the Rascal will present you with your reward.
Rewards: Enchanted Iron Tools, Enchanted Books, Ores, and other useful items.
Utility Golems
Utility golems provide functional benefits ranging from redstone automation to decorative item displays. These constructs can be summoned or found in specific structures throughout your world.
Copper Golem
The Copper Golem is a small mechanical helper that you can summon by building a specific structure. This adorable golem wanders around randomly and presses Copper Buttons within its range, making it an excellent source of randomness for redstone contraptions. Unlike other golems, the Copper Golem does not attack hostile mobs.

To summon a Copper Golem, place a Copper Block, then place a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o'Lantern on top of it, then a Lightning Rod which matches the state of the Copper Block. For example, an oxidised Copper Block, a Carved Pumpkin, and then an Oxidised Lightning Rod on top.

The Copper Golem will spawn immediately, similar to how Iron Golems and Snow Golems are created. Once summoned, the golem begins its endless quest to press every Copper Button it encounters. Note - to summon Copper Golems in the Overworld, use Waxed Lightning Rods.
Copper Golems gradually oxidize over time, progressing through four stages: normal, exposed, weathered, and oxidized. As oxidation increases, the golem moves more slowly and eventually freezes completely at the oxidized stage. You can reverse oxidation by right-clicking the golem with a Copper Ingot, which also heals it. Applying honeycomb wax coats the golem, preventing further oxidation.
When destroyed, Copper Golems drop 1-3 Copper Ingots. The Copper Button, crafted from Copper Ingots, is specifically designed to work with Copper Golems and also oxidizes over time, just like the golem itself.
Step 1: Craft or obtain a Copper Block (9 Copper Ingots in a crafting table).
Step 2: Place the Copper Block on the ground where you want the golem to spawn.
Step 3: Place a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o'Lantern on top of the Copper Block.
Step 4: The Copper Golem spawns immediately and begins wandering.
Tuff Golem
The Tuff Golem is a living statue that can hold and display items. These unique golems naturally generate in Strongholds, standing motionless in corridors and rooms.

You can give a Tuff Golem any item by right-clicking it while holding the item. The golem will hold and display the item, functioning as a mobile, decorative item frame. To retrieve the item, right-click the golem again with an empty hand.
Tuff Golems periodically freeze in place, becoming completely motionless statues. After some time, they wake up and resume wandering before freezing again. This cycle continues indefinitely, making them excellent for creating dynamic displays that change positions over time.
When broken, Tuff Golems drop 1-3 Tuff blocks. However, they are rare finds in Strongholds, so consider keeping them alive for their unique decorative functionality rather than destroying them for resources.
Tuff Golems excel at displaying valuable items in trophy rooms, holding tools in storage areas, or creating living museum exhibits. Their periodic movement adds interest to static builds. Try giving them enchanted weapons, rare blocks, or custom items to create impressive displays.
Hostile Mobs and Bosses
The hostile mobs in Friends and Foes range from challenging minibosses to a full-scale Nether boss. Each drops unique items and presents distinct combat mechanics that test your skills.
Iceologer
The Iceologer is an ice-wielding Illager that spawns in Iceologer Cabin structures found in snowy mountain biomes. This hostile mob attacks by summoning large ice chunks that hover above targets before crashing down, dealing heavy impact damage. The Iceologer can also apply Slowness effects, making it difficult to dodge subsequent attacks.

Combat against Iceologers requires awareness of your surroundings and the ability to predict where ice chunks will fall. When the Iceologer raises its arms to cast a spell, watch for the shadow indicating where the ice will land. Strafe sideways to avoid the impact zone, then rush in to attack during the Iceologer's casting cooldown.

Iceologers always drop 1 Totem of Freezing when killed. Additionally, they have a 50% chance to drop 0-1 Emerald when killed by a player, with Looting enchantments increasing this chance. They also drop 0-2 Blue Ice.
When an Iceologer summons an ice chunk, you have approximately 2 seconds before it falls. Watch for the shadow on the ground showing the impact location. The ice chunk deals significant damage and can hit multiple targets in a small area, so maintaining distance from other players in multiplayer is crucial.
Illusioner
The Illusioner is a master of deception found in Illusioner Shack and Illusioner Training Grounds structures. This dangerous Illager creates mirror images of itself and players, turning combat into a confusing battle of identifying the real threat. The Illusioner also becomes invisible periodically and shoots arrows from range.

When fighting an Illusioner, it creates multiple player illusions that mimic your appearance and movements. These illusions can't deal damage but serve to confuse and distract. The real Illusioner will become invisible after creating illusions, making it difficult to locate and attack.
To defeat an Illusioner, use area-of-effect attacks like Sweeping Edge or splash potions to damage all illusions simultaneously. Watch for arrow trajectories to locate the invisible Illusioner. Bringing milk buckets to clear Blindness effects can help maintain visibility during the fight.

Illusioners always drop 1 Totem of Illusion when defeated. They also have a 50% chance to drop 0-1 Emerald when killed by a player. Additionally, they drop 0-2 Arrows, which can be increased by Looting enchantments.
Wildfire
The Wildfire is a formidable Nether boss found exclusively in Nether Citadel structures. This blazing entity is surrounded by a protective shield of spinning shield debris that must be destroyed before you can damage the boss itself. With 120 health and devastating fire-based attacks, the Wildfire represents the ultimate challenge in Friends and Foes.

The Wildfire's shield absorbs all projectile damage and deflects arrows back at attackers. You must use melee weapons to break through the shield debris spinning around the boss. Once the shield takes approximately 30 damage, it shatters and the Wildfire becomes vulnerable to all damage types.
During combat, the Wildfire employs three main attack patterns. It fires volleys of fireballs in rapid succession, requiring constant movement to avoid. It summons Blaze minions periodically to overwhelm you with numbers. Finally, it performs ground-shaking shockwave attacks that radiate outward, dealing damage in a wide area.
The strategy for defeating the Wildfire involves breaking the shield quickly with a strong melee weapon, then switching to ranged combat to avoid its melee attacks. Prioritize killing summoned Blazes immediately to prevent being surrounded. Dodge shockwaves by timing your jumps or moving out of range. Fire Resistance potions are essential for survival.

Upon death, the Wildfire drops 3-5 Wildfire Crown Fragments. You need exactly 5 fragments to craft the Wildfire Crown, a powerful helmet with unique fire-based abilities. Multiple Wildfire kills may be necessary to obtain enough fragments.
Special Items and Totems
Friends and Foes introduces several unique items with powerful effects. Understanding how to obtain and use these items effectively enhances your survival capabilities.
Totem of Freezing
The Totem of Freezing is guaranteed to drop from every Iceologer you defeat. This totem functions similarly to the vanilla Totem of Undying but with distinct effects. When your health falls below 50% while holding the totem in your inventory, it activates automatically to prevent death.

Upon activation, the Totem of Freezing restores your health and applies defensive buffs, including Resistance and Regeneration. The totem is consumed when used, so keep multiple totems for prolonged dangerous adventures. The 50% health threshold means the totem triggers earlier than the vanilla Totem of Undying, potentially saving you in situations where the standard totem would not activate in time.
Totem of Illusion
Dropped by Illusioners, the Totem of Illusion provides an alternative defensive mechanism. Like the Totem of Freezing, it triggers when your health drops below 50%. However, instead of direct healing, this totem creates multiple player illusions that confuse nearby hostile mobs.

The illusions distract enemies, giving you time to escape or recover. This makes the Totem of Illusion particularly effective when surrounded by multiple mobs or when you need to retreat from a dangerous situation. The totem also provides some healing and protective effects, though its primary strength lies in the confusion it creates.

Wildfire Crown
The Wildfire Crown is a craftable helmet obtained by combining 5 Wildfire Crown Fragments in a crafting table. These fragments drop exclusively from the Wildfire boss, with each Wildfire dropping 3-5 fragments. You may need to defeat the boss multiple times to collect enough fragments for the crown.

This distinctive crown serves as a trophy demonstrating your victory over the Nether's most dangerous boss. It provides armor protection and grants unique fire-related abilities when equipped. The Wildfire Crown is essential for players building fire-based combat strategies or exploring the Nether extensively.
Advancement Guide
Friends and Foes adds numerous advancements that track your progress with the mod's content. Completing these achievements rewards you with in-game recognition and provides clear goals for exploring all the mod has to offer.
The most challenging advancement is "The Magicians," which requires defeating all three Illager magicians: the vanilla Evoker, the Iceologer, and the Illusioner. This tests your combat skills across multiple boss-tier encounters and rewards you for mastering combat against spell-casting enemies.
Tips and Strategies
Maximizing your Friends and Foes experience requires understanding when and how to engage with each mob. These strategies help you progress from early encounters to endgame boss battles.
Early Game Tips
Begin your Friends and Foes journey by seeking out the friendly mobs. Tame a Glare as soon as you locate a Lush Cave to help identify dangerous dark spots in your starter base. The Glare's ability to detect light levels below 5 makes it invaluable for preventing mob spawns in your builds.
If you spawn near Flower Forests or Meadows, locate and breed Mooblooms for a renewable source of Buttercups and Yellow Dye. Keep at least two Mooblooms unsheared so you can continue breeding them. Shear excess Mooblooms only when you need immediate Buttercups for dye.
Search beaches and mangrove swamps for Crabs to obtain Crab Claws early. The Reach effect significantly improves building efficiency, making construction projects faster and more convenient. A single Crab Claw goes a long way in early-game base building.
Mid Game Tips
Once you have access to Copper Ingots, summon a Copper Golem to experiment with redstone randomizers. Build a room with multiple Copper Buttons connected to different contraptions, and let the Copper Golem provide random activation. Remember to keep Honeycomb on hand to wax your golem and prevent oxidation.
When exploring Strongholds, watch for Tuff Golems in corridors. These rare finds make excellent decorative pieces for trophy rooms or storage areas. Give them enchanted Diamond tools or rare blocks to create impressive displays in your base.
Prepare for Iceologer and Illusioner encounters by gathering good armor and weapons. Both mobs can be challenging without proper equipment. Bring Shields to block Illusioner arrows and wear armor with Projectile Protection to reduce ice chunk damage from Iceologers.
Late Game Tips
The Wildfire boss requires serious preparation. Bring full Netherite armor with Protection IV, a strong melee weapon for breaking the shield, and a powerful bow for ranged damage. Fire Resistance potions are mandatory, and Regeneration potions provide additional survivability.
Stock up on both Totem of Freezing and Totem of Illusion before attempting difficult challenges like Ocean Monument raids or End City exploration. The earlier activation threshold compared to Totem of Undying can save you in situations where the vanilla totem would not trigger.
After obtaining the Wildfire Crown, use it for Nether exploration and fire-based combat builds. The crown's abilities make it superior to standard helmets in fire-heavy environments, though you sacrifice some armor points for its special effects.
Boss Difficulty
- Iceologer: Accessible mid-game, drops useful Totem of Freezing
- Illusioner: Manageable difficulty, illusions more annoying than dangerous
- Wildfire: Ultimate challenge, best rewards, requires full preparation
Challenges
- Iceologer: Ice chunks difficult to dodge without speed
- Illusioner: Illusions make targeting difficult, requires strategy
- Wildfire: Extremely difficult, shield mechanic frustrating, may require multiple attempts

The Totem of Freezing and Totem of Illusion both activate when your health drops below 50%, unlike the vanilla Totem of Undying which only triggers upon death. The Totem of Freezing focuses on direct healing and damage resistance, making it ideal for sustained combat. The Totem of Illusion creates player illusions that distract enemies, making it better for escaping dangerous situations. Both are consumed on use, so collect multiple totems for extended adventures.
Place a Copper Block on the ground, then place a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o'Lantern directly on top of the Copper Block. The Copper Golem spawns immediately, similar to creating an Iron Golem or Snow Golem. The golem will begin wandering and pressing any Copper Buttons within its range. Use Copper Ingots to de-oxidize it and Honeycomb to wax it for permanent protection against oxidation.
The Wildfire Crown is a helmet crafted from 5 Wildfire Crown Fragments dropped by the Wildfire boss. It provides armor protection and grants special fire-based abilities when equipped. The crown is essential for players specializing in fire magic or spending extended time in the Nether. Craft it by placing the 5 fragments in a helmet shape on a crafting table.
When you first encounter a Rascal, it nods at you and then disappears. You must find it two more times within a limited area around the initial encounter. Each time you locate the Rascal, it moves to a new hiding spot nearby. After finding it for the third time, the Rascal rewards you with enchanted tools, enchanted books, or valuable items. The rewards scale with depth, so finding Rascals in deeper caves yields better loot.
