Eternal Starlight

Portal Activation

Estimated reading: 4 minutes

Locating the Portal

The first step to entering the Eternal Starlight dimension is to find the Portal Structure. These portals naturally generate in the Overworld and come in several biome-specific variants, including Common, Cold, Desert, Forest, and Jungle.

Each portal has a distinct appearance but functions similarly. The portal structures are made from dark, stone-like blocks called Chiseled Voidstone and are typically surrounded by thematic environmental elements, such as unique plants or terrain features that match the biome variant.

Using a mod like Explorer’s Compass can greatly accelerate the process of locating a portal, especially in larger worlds. While it’s not absolutely necessary, it is advisable to prepare for combat before approaching any portal, as the ensuing battle can be quite intense.

Command Options

With commands enabled, the Portals can also be located using the command /locate structure eternal_starlight:portal_ruins_ , then choose a theme such as cold, desert, forest, common, and jungle.

The Gatekeeper Encounter

Each portal is guarded by a Gatekeeper NPC. This entity, once known for initiating conversations, now typically attacks players as soon as they approach. They’ll be seated before getting up and fighting with the player.

The Gatekeeper employs a mix of physical and magical attacks, which include meteor showers, ground slams, dashes, and multi-directional melee strikes. These abilities can easily catch unprepared players off guard, particularly the meteor strikes, which deliver sudden and devastating area-of-effect damage.

Fighting the GateKeeper

During the Gatekeeper’s battle phase, adopting a defensive strategy is crucial. Players should prioritize evading attacks and ensuring ongoing engagement. While shields offer some protection, employing mobility-enhancing equipment, such as high-level armor or spells, provides a greater chance of survival.

It is not necessary to defeat the Gatekeeper completely; instead, weakening it enough will prompt it to surrender and drop a loot bag. This loot bag contains crucial items needed for accessing different dimensions: the Orb of Prophecy and a storybook that reveals mod lore.

Activating the Portal

Before activation, players must ensure the portal structure is clear of Vines or any obstructions. These Vines can interfere with the activation process and must be broken manually. Once cleared, players should equip the Orb of Prophecy and right-click on the portal frame to activate it.

When correctly activated, the portal emits a unique visual effect and opens a shimmering gateway to the Eternal Starlight dimension. Players should be aware that shader packs may prevent the activation visuals from rendering correctly.

Disabling shaders temporarily can resolve this issue. Once open, the portal remains active, allowing free travel until it is broken or deactivated.

Preparing for Entry

Before entering the portal, players should prepare by stocking up on food, enchanted armor, and suitable weapons or spellbooks. Although the dimension is abundant in flora and beauty, it is also inhabited by aggressive mobs and complex boss encounters.

Bringing ranged weapons, fire resistance potions, and exploration gear such as a glider or jetpack can provide significant advantages, especially in biomes with challenging terrain.

Inside the Eternal Starlight

Additionally, the storybook provided by the Gatekeeper often contains hints about the bosses, items, and mechanics found within the Eternal Starlight dimension. It is highly recommended to review this item before proceeding.

Portal Reactivation

Players who leave the Eternal Starlight dimension and wish to return must reconstruct the portal. This requires using Void Stone blocks, which are commonly found in the underground caves of the dimension.

The portal frame must match the original design exactly, and players may use chiseled Void Stone variants for aesthetic purposes. After the frame is rebuilt, the Orb of Prophecy is used again to ignite the portal.

You can view the recipes for Void Stone blocks and their variants using JEI or similar recipe-viewing tools. It’s important to note that the Orb of Prophecy is not consumed during this process, allowing it to be reused for future activations.
