Thrasher

Estimated reading: 3 minutes

The Thrasher is a hostile aquatic mob introduced by the Upgrade Aquatic mod for Minecraft. This creature can be found in Cold Ocean biomes at depths below Y = 30.

The Thrasher behaves like a predatory shark, using echolocation to detect and attack nearby entities. Its presence adds a significant threat to deep-sea exploration and resource gathering.

Spawning and Location

Thrashers exclusively spawn in Cold and Frozen Ocean biomes below Y-level 30. They are most commonly found in deep ocean ravines and other low-light aquatic environments.

A Thrasher

A rarer variant, known as the Great Thrasher, appears less frequently and can only be found in deep frozen oceans. Even though they might be difficult to come across due to their specific spawning conditions, they can often be found in groups.

Behavior and Abilities

The Thrasher is blind and navigates its surroundings by emitting sonar pulses. If it detects a player or mob within range, it will charge at them and attempt to bite and grab its target.

Once it successfully catches an entity, it inflicts rapid bite damage over a short period. In total, the Thrasher has 50 Health and 8 Armor points.

Player Grabbed by a Thrasher

Escaping during this phase is challenging. Players must deal damage quickly to compel the Thrasher to release them. During combat, the Thrasher will periodically use its sonar to track nearby threats.

However, it can be challenging to escape the Thrasher, especially if the camera becomes locked. Some methods include using a Trident that’s enchanted with Impaling or Riptide, or a Thorns Enchantment.

Shaders can also be problematic and prevent players from moving the camera if they’re enabled. Pressing K may allow you to quickly deactivate shaders, fixing the issue.

Drops and Crafting Materials

Upon death, the Thrasher drops 1-2 Thrasher Teeth, with a 20% chance to drop an additional one. There’s also a 33% chance of obtaining a Disc Fragment. These teeth serve as a crafting ingredient in several Upgrade Aquatic items:

  • Tooth Blocks: Decorative blocks with thematic textures.
  • Tooth Doors and Walls: Automatically close after a brief delay.
  • Tooth Lantern: Light-emitting decorative item.
  • Trident: Can be crafted using Thrasher Teeth and other mod items.

Combat Strategy

Thrashers are strong creatures and should not be underestimated. Players are encouraged to wear at least iron or diamond armor. The most effective weapon against them is a Trident enchanted with Impaling IV or higher, as it inflicts bonus damage to aquatic mobs.

Avoiding sonar detection can prevent attacks. Remaining stationary or at a distance from sonar pulses decreases the chances of engagement. If engaged, employing high-mobility and underwater combat tools, such as the Depth Strider or Respiration-enchanted gear, is advisable.

Great Thrasher

The Great Thrasher is a more powerful variant of the regular Thrasher, featuring increased health, higher damage output, and a longer bite grip duration. While it behaves similarly to the standard Thrasher, defeating it requires better gear and tactics.
