Elder Eye

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

The Elder Eye is a redstone-enabled utility item introduced in the Upgrade Aquatic mod for Minecraft. It is dropped by Elder Guardians and functions as a motion sensor that can detect nearby mobs or players, emitting redstone signals in response.

This versatile component can be used to create traps, automated doors, or surveillance systems in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Acquisition

Elder Guardian, Which Drops the Elder Eye

The Elder Eye is dropped by Elder Guardians with a 100% chance on death. It is not craftable and can only be obtained through combat in ocean monuments. This limited availability enhances its value in Redstone circuitry.

Functionality and Mechanics

When positioned in the world, the Elder Eye functions as a directional sensor. It can detect entities up to 14 blocks away and emits a Redstone signal from the face of the block opposite the direction it is observing. The detection range is spherical but can be controlled directionally based on the block’s placement.

Usage in Redstone Circuitry

Right-clicking the Elder Eye toggles its detection mode. It functions passively, requiring no external power source. The Redstone output can activate adjacent blocks, such as doors, pistons, lights, or traps.

Use Cases

The Elder Eye is particularly effective in the following setups:

  • Underwater Traps: Detect and damage hostile mobs or players in ocean bases.
  • Surveillance Systems: Monitor motion in confined areas or entranceways.
  • Automation: Trigger mechanisms like gates, alarms, or item sorters without manual input.

Its motion-sensing capabilities surpass those of vanilla Tripwires or Observers in some scenarios due to its extended detection radius and multidirectional placement options.

Compatibility and Integration

The Elder Eye integrates seamlessly with standard redstone systems. It is unaffected by water, making it ideal for underwater builds. Players can combine it with Guardian Spines for trap constructions or use it in conjunction with sticky blocks and Pistons for more elaborate mechanisms.
