Base Relics

Space Dissector

Estimated reading: 10 minutes

The Space Dissector is one of over 30 unique Relics added by the Relics mod for Minecraft. Each Relic gives you powerful abilities that you can level up and customize, adding new gameplay options whether you’re just starting out or deep into the endgame.

Relics use Curios slots – special equipment slots added by the Curios mod that let you wear accessories alongside your regular armor. You can find Relics in loot Chests throughout the world, with each one appearing in specific biomes and structures based on its theme. Once you find a Relic, you can upgrade it using experience to unlock stronger abilities and better stats.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Space Dissector, including how to obtain it, its abilities, leveling costs, and configuration options. For information on other items from this mod, visit our Relics Mod Wiki.

Obtaining

The Space Dissector allows you to create temporary portals that let you teleport between two points. This Relic isn’t equipped, as it’s used while held in the main hand.

The Space Dissector can be found in Nether-themed loot chests. This includes Ruined Portal chests in the Overworld, as well as any chests in structures containing fire-related terms like Nether, Inferno, Hell, Lava, Magma, Fire, Flame, Blaze, or Ember in their loot tables. It also appears in any chest within the Nether dimension itself at a lower rate. The portal theme fits perfectly – you’re finding a portal-creating relic near portals.

Relic Quality & Rerolling

Every Relic you find has a quality rating between 0 and 5 stars, shown by the circles beneath its portrait. This rating reflects how good the starting stats rolled when the Relic was generated – higher quality means better initial values.

Each stat on a Relic has a minimum and maximum possible value. When you first obtain a Relic, its stats are randomly rolled within this range. If you’re unhappy with the roll, you can reroll the stats by spending 50 Minecraft Experience. This gives you a chance at better values, though results are still random.

Every time you reroll and a stat doesn’t improve, your Luck percentage increases by one. Higher Luck improves your odds of rolling better stats on future attempts. However, each point of Luck also adds 5 Experience to the reroll cost. At 10% Luck the cost rises to 100 Experience, and at 50% Luck it reaches 300 Experience.

To push stats beyond their maximum base values, you’ll need to spend Upgrade Points earned from leveling the Relic. Rerolling only affects the base stat range – upgrades are applied on top of whatever values you roll.

Usage

Hold the Space Dissector in your main hand and right-click to start creating a portal. As you hold the button, a portal appears where you’re looking (within your distance range). While still holding right-click, move your crosshair to a different location and release – this creates a second linked portal. Any living entity that walks into either portal gets teleported to the other one, and both portals work in both directions.

The portals operate on line-of-sight, meaning they appear wherever you’re aiming up to your maximum distance (16-32 blocks at base, up to 112 blocks when fully upgraded). While holding right-click, you’ll see orange sparks indicating where the second portal will appear, and the first portal will rotate to face your cursor. If blocks obstruct the path between portals, they won’t function – make sure both ends have clear space.

Two Portals opened with the Spacial Dissector

The Space Dissector excels at silent traversal. Unlike Ender Pearls that make noise, portals are completely quiet – perfect for navigating the Deep Dark without alerting the Warden. They’re also invaluable for scaling cliffs, crossing ravines, or accessing hard-to-reach areas. At max stats, 112-block range and 60-second duration gives you incredible flexibility for exploration and escape routes.

Compared to the Magic Mirror (which teleports you to spawn) or Chorus Inhibitor (random teleportation), the Space Dissector offers precise, controlled positioning. You decide exactly where both ends go. The tradeoff is that it requires more active aiming and the portals are temporary, but for tactical repositioning in combat or exploration, nothing beats point-to-point portals you can create on demand.

Abilities

The Space Dissector has 1 ability: Dissection. With a maximum Relic level of 10, you can earn up to 10 Upgrade Points to invest in this ability.

Dissection is available immediately at Relic level 0, so you can start creating portals the moment you pick up the relic. Since there’s only one ability to upgrade, every Upgrade Point goes directly into extending your portal range and duration.

Dissection

Dissection ability from the Space Dissector

Holding RMB creates a portal at a point along the line of sight. Releasing RMB within a distance of X blocks creates a second portal in the same way, linking it to the first. When a living entity approaches a portal, it is teleported to the linked portal. Portals do not function if impassable blocks are in their way. After Y seconds, the portals close and disappear.

The click-and-drag mechanic takes some practice but becomes intuitive quickly. Right-click to place your entry portal, then sweep your view to wherever you want to exit – the first portal will track your cursor movement, rotating to face your target location. Release the button and both portals activate, ready to teleport anything that touches them. The visual feedback of orange sparks helps you gauge exactly where your exit will appear.

Both stats scale well with upgrades. Distance determines how far you can place portals from yourself – starting at 16-32 blocks and reaching up to 112 blocks at max level, letting you span massive gaps or reach distant ledges. Duration determines how long portals stay active – from 5-10 seconds at base up to a full minute at max. Prioritize distance first for greater tactical flexibility, then invest in duration so your portals stick around long enough for multiple uses or emergency escapes.

Dissection unlocks at Relic level 0 and costs 1 Upgrade Point(s) per level, with a maximum ability level of 10.

Experience Sources

Relic Experience is required to level up a Relic, gain Upgrade Points, and spend those points on upgrading abilities. The Space Dissector offers 1 different way to earn Relic Experience.

You earn +1 Relic Experience each time you create a new portal when no existing portal from this relic is active. If you already have a portal pair active and try to create another, you won’t gain experience – only fresh portal creations count. This means waiting for your portals to expire or letting them time out naturally before creating new ones to maximize experience gain.

Like all Relics, the Space Dissector benefits from Experience Spreading. Whenever any equipped Relic gains experience, 25% of that amount is shared with all other Relics in your inventory.

Experience Spreading

Experience Spreading is a passive mechanic that helps level up Relics you aren’t actively using. If you gain 100 Relic Experience on one item, every other Relic in your inventory receives 25 bonus experience. This makes it worthwhile to carry multiple Relics even before you can use them all.

Leveling

The Space Dissector has a maximum level of 10, providing 10 Upgrade Points total. Each level requires progressively more Minecraft Experience, as shown in the table below.

Reaching level 10 requires a total of 10,000 Minecraft Experience, equivalent to approximately 80 player levels.

Leveling Strategy

With two stats competing for your Upgrade Points, prioritize distance first. Going from 32 to 56+ blocks fundamentally changes what you can do with the relic – suddenly ravines, cliff faces, and multi-story structures become trivial to navigate.

Once you have enough range for your typical use cases (around 60-80 blocks covers most situations), invest in duration so your portals last long enough for return trips or emergency escapes. The Space Dissector levels slowly since you only gain 1 XP per fresh portal creation, so carry it while using other relics to benefit from Experience Spreading.

Related Relics

Works Well With: The Magic Mirror complements the Space Dissector by providing long-range teleportation back to your spawn point – use portals for local navigation and the mirror for returning home. The Chorus Inhibitor offers a different teleportation style that can save you in emergencies when you don’t have time to aim portals carefully.

Alternatives: If you want simpler teleportation, the Magic Mirror provides one-click travel to your spawn without any aiming required. For combat repositioning, Ender Pearls are faster to throw but make noise and deal fall damage – the Space Dissector is silent and safe but requires more setup time.

Config

Server operators and modpack creators can customize the Space Dissector through configuration files. To enable per-Relic configuration, first set enabledExtendedConfigs: true in the main relics.yaml file located in your Minecraft config folder.

After restarting the game, a Relics folder will appear in the config directory. The Space Dissector can be configured by editing space_dissector.yaml.
