Ice Skates

Estimated reading: 9 minutes

The Ice Skates is one of over 30 unique Relics added by the Relics mod for Minecraft. Each Relic gives you powerful abilities that you can level up and customize, adding new gameplay options whether you’re just starting out or deep into the endgame.

Relics use Curios slots – special equipment slots added by the Curios mod that let you wear accessories alongside your regular armor. You can find Relics in loot chests throughout the world, with each one appearing in specific biomes and structures based on its theme. Once you find a Relic, you can upgrade it using experience to unlock stronger abilities and better stats.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Ice Skates, including how to obtain it, its abilities, leveling costs, and configuration options. For information on other items from this mod, visit our Relics Mod Wiki.

Obtaining

The Ice Skates transform you into a speed demon on frozen surfaces, letting you build up momentum while sliding across ice to reach incredible velocities. This Relic is worn on the Feet.

The Ice Skates can be found in chests within cold and frozen biomes. This includes Snowy Tundra, Ice Spikes, Frozen River, Snowy Taiga, and any other biome with “frozen,” “ice,” “cold,” “snow,” or “glacial” in its name. There is a 2.5% chance for this Relic to appear in each eligible chest.

Relic Quality & Rerolling

Every Relic you find has a quality rating between 0 and 5 stars, shown by the circles beneath its portrait. This rating reflects how good the starting stats rolled when the Relic was generated – higher quality means better initial values.

Each stat on a Relic has a minimum and maximum possible value. When you first obtain a Relic, its stats are randomly rolled within this range. If you’re unhappy with the roll, you can reroll the stats by spending 33 Minecraft Experience. This gives you a chance at better values, though results are still random.

Every time you reroll and a stat doesn’t improve, your Luck percentage increases by one. Higher Luck improves your odds of rolling better stats on future attempts. However, each point of Luck also adds 5 Experience to the reroll cost. At 10% Luck the cost rises to 83 Experience, and at 50% Luck it reaches 283 Experience.

To push stats beyond their maximum base values, you’ll need to spend Upgrade Points earned from leveling the Relic. Rerolling only affects the base stat range – upgrades are applied on top of whatever values you roll.

Usage

To use the Ice Skates, simply sprint on any ice block – regular ice, packed ice, or blue ice all work. As you slide, your speed multiplier builds up over time, shown by cloud particles appearing at your feet. The longer you slide without stopping, the faster you go, until you reach your maximum duration cap.

The speed boost works as a percentage multiplier that increases each moment you remain on ice while sprinting. At base stats, you can gain between 10-35% speed per second of sliding, stacking up to 2.5-5.0 seconds. This means at maximum base stats, you could reach up to 175% bonus speed (35% × 5 seconds). With full upgrades, this jumps to a massive 875% bonus speed (87.5% × 10 seconds), turning you into a blur across frozen lakes.

The Skating ability also grants a 0.6 step height boost while active, allowing you to glide smoothly over single-block ledges without breaking your momentum. When you unlock Ram at level 5, you can weaponize this speed – simply skate into enemies to deal damage based on your current sliding duration, knocking them away in a satisfying collision.

Compared to vanilla speed options, the Ice Skates offer an incredible burst of mobility that surpasses even Speed II potions when fully charged. The tradeoff is you need ice to use them, but in snowy biomes or with a bucket of packed ice for pathmaking, you’ll have the fastest overland travel in the game. There’s something deeply satisfying about hitting maximum speed and watching the landscape fly by.

Abilities

The Ice Skates has 2 abilities: Skating and Ram. With a maximum Relic level of 10, you can earn up to 10 Upgrade Points to distribute across these abilities.

Skating is available immediately when you equip the Ice Skates. Ram unlocks at Relic level 5, giving you an offensive option once you’ve built up some momentum.

Skating

Increases movement speed on ice by X% per second of sliding. The modifier stops increasing if the sliding duration exceeds Y seconds.

Skating is the core ability that makes this Relic shine. While sprinting on ice without crouching or being in water or lava, you’ll accumulate a speed bonus that stacks every tick. You’ll see cloud particles spawning around you more frequently as your charge builds up, giving visual feedback on your current speed tier. The speed bonus decays twice as fast as it builds when you leave ice, so short hops are fine but extended breaks will reset your momentum.

At base stats, you can reach 10-35% speed per second with a cap of 2.5-5.0 seconds. At maximum upgrade, these numbers jump to 87.5% speed per second with a 10-second cap. That’s up to 875% bonus movement speed when fully charged – nearly 10 times your normal walking speed. Prioritize Duration upgrades first to extend your charging window, then boost Speed to maximize your top velocity.

Skating unlocks at Relic level 0 and costs 1 Upgrade Point(s) per level, with a maximum ability level of 10.

Ram

Upon collision with targets, deals X damage per second of sliding from the «Skating» ability.

Ram turns your speed into a weapon. Once unlocked, any entity you collide with while sliding takes damage based on your current charge duration. The damage formula multiplies your sliding duration (in ticks) by the damage stat, meaning more speed buildup equals bigger hits. Enemies are also knocked back with force proportional to your charge, launching them away from your skating path.

At base stats, you deal 0.5-2.5 damage per second of sliding. At max upgrade, this becomes 5.0 damage per second. With a fully charged 10-second slide, that’s 50 damage in a single collision – enough to one-shot most regular mobs. The knockback scales too, making Ram excellent for crowd control in open frozen areas. This ability pairs perfectly with ice path strategies, letting you bowl through enemy groups at high speed.

Ram unlocks at Relic level 5 and costs 1 Upgrade Point(s) per level, with a maximum ability level of 5.

Experience Sources

Relic Experience is required to level up a Relic, gain Upgrade Points, and spend those points on upgrading abilities. The Ice Skates offers 1 different way to earn Relic Experience.

The primary method is through the Skating ability itself. For each second you spend actively building up speed on ice, you gain +1 Relic Experience. This means you earn XP passively just by using the Relic as intended – the more you skate, the faster it levels. A single long skating session across a frozen lake can net you dozens of experience points.

Like all Relics, the Ice Skates benefits from Experience Spreading. Whenever any equipped Relic gains experience, 25% of that amount is shared with all other Relics in your inventory.

Experience Spreading

Experience Spreading is a passive mechanic that helps level up Relics you aren’t actively using. If you gain 100 Relic Experience on one item, every other Relic in your inventory receives 25 bonus experience. This makes it worthwhile to carry multiple Relics even before you can use them all.

Leveling

The Ice Skates has a maximum level of 10, providing 10 Upgrade Points total. Each level requires progressively more Minecraft Experience, as shown in the table below.

Reaching level 10 requires a total of 10,000 Minecraft Experience, equivalent to approximately 47 player levels.

Leveling Strategy

Rush to level 5 to unlock Ram, then focus entirely on Skating upgrades. Max Duration first (10 points total between both stats) to extend your charge window to 10 seconds, which dramatically increases both your top speed and Ram damage potential. The Duration stat affects both abilities since Ram’s damage scales with skating duration. Only invest heavily in Ram’s damage stat after Skating is maxed.

Related Relics

Works Well With: The Ice Breaker complements the Ice Skates perfectly – while Ice Skates excel at high-speed travel on existing ice, the Ice Breaker helps you create and manipulate ice terrain. The Wool Mitten provides cold resistance and snowball-based abilities, rounding out a full winter-themed loadout.

Alternatives: If you want movement speed without requiring ice, consider the Roller Skates, which work on any smooth terrain. The Running Shoes from Artifacts offer a simpler, always-on speed bonus without the momentum-building mechanic.

Config

Server operators and modpack creators can customize the Ice Skates through configuration files. To enable per-Relic configuration, first set enabledExtendedConfigs: true in the main relics.yaml file located in your Minecraft config folder.

After restarting the game, a Relics folder will appear in the config directory. The Ice Skates can be configured by editing ice_skates.yaml.
