Cowboy Hat

Estimated reading: 12 minutes

The Cowboy Hat is a Relic added by Reliquified Artifacts, an addon that brings the Relics mod’s leveling and ability system to Artifacts items. With it on your head, you can push any horse beyond its natural limits with enhanced speed and jumping, and even lasso otherwise unmountable mobs for a wild ride.

The Cowboy Hat is worn on the Head. It can be found in Village and Pillager structures or in chests within Savanna, Steppe, and Prairie biomes. It suits players who rely on mounts for overland travel or want to turn hostile mobs into controllable steeds.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Cowboy Hat, including how to obtain it, its abilities, leveling costs, and configuration options. For information on other items from this mod, visit our Relics Mod Wiki.

Mod Requirements

The Cowboy Hat requires both the Artifacts mod and the RAR-Compat (Reliquified Artifacts) addon to be installed. The Artifacts mod provides the base item, while RAR-Compat adds the Relic leveling system, abilities, and stats on top of it.

Obtaining

Enhances the agility of the relic bearer’s mounts. This Relic is worn on the Head.

Cowboy Hat from Reliquified Artifacts showing in-game tooltip

The Cowboy Hat can be found in two types of locations. The first is any chest within a Village or Pillager structure, regardless of biome or dimension, where it has a spawn weight of 500. The second is any chest located within a biome containing Savanna, Steppe, or Prairie in its biome ID, where it has a spawn weight of 300.

Relic Quality & Rerolling

Every Relic you find has a quality rating between 0 and 5 stars, shown by the circles beneath its portrait. This rating reflects how good the starting stats rolled when the Relic was generated – higher quality means better initial values.

Each stat on a Relic has a minimum and maximum possible value. When you first obtain a Relic, its stats are randomly rolled within this range. If you’re unhappy with the roll, you can reroll the stats by spending 50 Minecraft Experience. This gives you a chance at better values, though results are still random.

Every time you reroll and a stat doesn’t improve, your Luck percentage increases by one. Higher Luck improves your odds of rolling better stats on future attempts. However, each point of Luck also adds 5 Experience to the reroll cost. At 10% Luck the cost rises to 100 Experience, and at 50% Luck it reaches 300 Experience.

To push stats beyond their maximum base values, you’ll need to spend Upgrade Points earned from leveling the Relic. Rerolling only affects the base stat range – upgrades are applied on top of whatever values you roll.

Usage

The Cowboy Hat enhances your mounted travel and gives you control over creatures you’d normally never ride. Its Gallop ability passively applies a percentage bonus to your mount’s movement speed, jump strength, and safe fall distance the moment you climb into the saddle, making horses noticeably faster and capable of clearing larger obstacles.

Once you unlock Lasso at Relic level 5, you can look at almost any mob, activate the ability, and instantly mount it for a set duration. Excluded mobs include the Ender Dragon, Wither, Warden, and Elder Guardian. After the riding time expires or you dismount, a cooldown begins before you can use Lasso again. While riding via Lasso, Gallop’s bonuses apply to the mob as well, making even an improvised mount faster than it would be on its own.

Gallop scales with the mount’s base stats. A horse with naturally high movement speed or jump strength will benefit even more from the percentage bonus than a slow one. If you invest points into Gallop early, you’ll feel the difference as soon as you mount up. Lasso is situationally powerful, especially when crossing hostile terrain where a nearby mob makes a faster or more useful ride than your horse.

The Cowboy Hat rewards players who travel long distances on horseback. Since Relic Experience accumulates while riding via Lasso, using the ability regularly is the fastest way to level the Relic and unlock more Upgrade Points for either ability.

Abilities

The Cowboy Hat has 2 abilities: Gallop and Lasso. With a maximum Relic level of 15, you can earn up to 15 Upgrade Points to distribute across these abilities.

Gallop is available immediately from Relic level 0, while Lasso requires you to reach Relic level 5 before it can be researched and used. Since both abilities cap at level 10 and you have 15 total points, you cannot max both. You can take one to level 10 and put 5 into the other, so plan your investment based on which playstyle you prefer.

1

Gallop

Increases the movement speed, jump height, and safe fall height of mounts by X%.

Gallop is a passive ability that activates any time you mount a mob. The bonus applies to three attributes simultaneously: movement speed, jump strength, and safe fall distance. At base (20 – 30%), you’ll already notice your horse moving faster and jumping higher. At max level (75%), a horse becomes dramatically more capable for traversing terrain quickly or reaching elevated areas in a single bound.

The stat uses MULTIPLY_BASE scaling, meaning the bonus grows relative to the mount’s base attribute value. A high-speed horse will gain more raw movement from Gallop than a slow one, so pairing this Relic with a well-bred horse amplifies the benefit considerably. The attribute is applied via ADD_MULTIPLIED_BASE, so it stacks correctly with other modifiers.

Gallop unlocks at Relic level 0 and costs 1 Upgrade Point per level, with a maximum ability level of 10.

Lasso

When used, this ability allows you to ride and control any mob for up to X seconds. After the time expires or dismounting, it goes on a 1-minute cooldown.

Lasso is an active ability that lets you mount any mob by looking at it and activating the ability. You need to have the target in your line of sight within your interaction range. The following mob types cannot be lassoed: Ender Dragon, Wither, Warden, and Elder Guardian. All other mobs, including hostile ones, are valid targets. While riding a non-horse mob via Lasso, you can jump by holding the jump key, provided the mob is on the ground and is not a flying or water mob.

At base values (2.0 – 5.0 seconds), Lasso gives you a brief window to control the mob before it dismounts you automatically. At max level (12.5 seconds), you have a much longer ride to use strategically. After the duration expires or you dismount early, a cooldown applies before Lasso can be used again. Relic Experience is earned each time you activate Lasso and during the ride itself (see Experience Sources below).

Lasso unlocks at Relic level 5 and costs 1 Upgrade Point per level, with a maximum ability level of 10.

Constellations

Before you can use an ability, it must first be researched. Each ability has a constellation puzzle that you need to solve by connecting stars hidden beneath fog. When the constellation matches the background pattern, the ability unlocks automatically.

The Cowboy Hat has two separate constellations, one for each ability. The Gallop constellation contains 5 stars, with all outer stars linking to a central hub. The Lasso constellation is more complex, containing 9 stars connected in a chain with a branching link, reflecting its higher unlock requirement. Each constellation must be solved independently in the research window before the corresponding ability becomes available.

Constellation Hints

If you’re stuck on a puzzle, you can purchase hints for 50 Minecraft Experience each. Alternatively, reveal the entire constellation instantly for 250 Minecraft Experience for Gallop and 450 Minecraft Experience for Lasso.

Experience Sources

Relic Experience is required to level up a Relic, gain Upgrade Points, and spend those points on upgrading abilities. The Cowboy Hat offers 2 different ways to earn Relic Experience.

The first source is tied to riding via the Lasso ability. While you’re mounted on a moving mob through Lasso, you have a 25% chance to earn 1 Relic Experience each second. This is the primary source of XP and rewards you for using the ability frequently and staying in the saddle as long as possible.

The second source triggers each time you activate the Lasso ability, granting 1 Relic Experience instantly on cast. This makes every use of Lasso doubly rewarding: you gain XP from the activation and from the ride itself.

Like all Relics, the Cowboy Hat benefits from Experience Spreading. Whenever any equipped Relic gains experience, 25% of that amount is shared with all other Relics in your inventory.

Experience Spreading

Experience Spreading is a passive mechanic that helps level up Relics you aren’t actively using. If you gain 100 Relic Experience on one item, every other Relic in your inventory receives 25 bonus experience. This makes it worthwhile to carry multiple Relics even before you can use them all.

Leveling

The Cowboy Hat has a maximum level of 15, providing 15 Upgrade Points total. Each level requires progressively more Minecraft Experience, as shown in the table below.

Reaching level 15 requires a total of 12,000 Minecraft Experience, equivalent to approximately 68 player levels.

Leveling Strategy

Since you have 15 Upgrade Points but each ability caps at level 10, you cannot max both. Invest in Gallop first for a constant speed bonus every time you mount up. Lasso unlocks at Relic level 5 automatically, so by the time you reach it you’ll already have several points banked.

From there, consider splitting remaining points based on whether you prefer sustained travel speed (more into Gallop) or longer Lasso ride durations (into Lasso). A 10 in Gallop and 5 in Lasso is a strong all-rounder build.

Related Relics

The Horse Flute (held, relics-core) pairs exceptionally well with the Cowboy Hat. It lets you summon your horse remotely from anywhere, meaning you’re never without a Gallop-boosted mount regardless of where you left it. The Elytra Booster (back, relics-core) complements the Cowboy Hat for players who switch between ground and air travel: the Cowboy Hat handles fast overland riding while the Elytra Booster extends your glide range and provides propulsion without fireworks, covering both travel modes efficiently.

If you don’t have the Cowboy Hat, the Night Vision Goggles (head, artifacts-compat) are a strong alternative head-slot Relic for exploration-focused players, offering gamma vision and darkness resistance that makes cave and dungeon navigation far safer. For combat-oriented players, the Superstitious Hat (head, artifacts-compat) is a useful substitute, stacking a looting bonus on every mob kill and rewarding aggressive playstyles rather than mounted travel.

Config

To edit the configuration for an Artifact-compatible Relic, update the enabledExtendedConfigs: false option within relics.yaml in your Minecraft config folder by changing the value to true.

After relaunching Minecraft, a rarcompat folder will appear in the config directory. Inside, look for and edit cowboy_hat.yaml.
