Charm of Sinking
The
Charm Of Sinking is a Relic added by Reliquified Artifacts, an addon that brings the Relics mod’s leveling and ability system to Artifacts items. It lets you sink straight to the seafloor and breathe indefinitely while standing on it, making ocean exploration far less of a frantic scramble.
Once both abilities are researched, the Charm Of Sinking handles two of the biggest obstacles in underwater exploration: slow descent and limited air. The Anchor ability doubles your sinking speed to get you down faster, while the Diver ability stops air consumption and slowly refills your supply while you stand on the ocean floor.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the Charm Of Sinking, including how to obtain it, its abilities, leveling costs, and configuration options. For information on other items from this mod, visit our Relics Mod Wiki.
The Charm Of Sinking requires both the Artifacts mod and the RAR-Compat (Reliquified Artifacts) addon to be installed. The Artifacts mod provides the base item, while RAR-Compat adds the Relic leveling system, abilities, and stats on top of it.
Obtaining
Grants the relic bearer’s legs the ability to absorb air from the ground. This Relic is worn around the Neck in the Curios Necklace slot, a special equipment interface added by the Curios API.

The Charm Of Sinking can be found in
chests located in water-adjacent biomes across any dimension. Specifically, it can appear in any chest inside a biome whose name contains terms such as Ocean, Sea, Marine, Pelagic, Beach, Shore, Coast, Strand, Sandbank, River, Stream, Creek, Brook, Water, or Tributary.
This covers standard oceans, beaches, and rivers, as well as modded biomes that follow the same aquatic naming conventions. It has a spawn weight of 300, making it one of the more readily available Relics in aquatic areas.
Relic Quality & Rerolling
Every Relic you find has a quality rating between 0 and 5 stars, shown by the circles beneath its portrait. This rating reflects how good the starting stats rolled when the Relic was generated – higher quality means better initial values.
Each stat on a Relic has a minimum and maximum possible value. When you first obtain a Relic, its stats are randomly rolled within this range. If you’re unhappy with the roll, you can reroll the stats by spending 50 Minecraft Experience. This gives you a chance at better values, though results are still random.
Every time you reroll and a stat doesn’t improve, your Luck percentage increases by one. Higher Luck improves your odds of rolling better stats on future attempts. However, each point of Luck also adds 5 Experience to the reroll cost. At 10% Luck the cost rises to 100 Experience, and at 50% Luck it reaches 300 Experience.
To push stats beyond their maximum base values, you’ll need to spend Upgrade Points earned from leveling the Relic. Rerolling only affects the base stat range – upgrades are applied on top of whatever values you roll.
Usage
The Charm Of Sinking is built for underwater exploration. Wear it in your Curios Necklace slot, research both constellations, and the two abilities activate automatically whenever you enter the water. Anchor kicks in the moment you submerge, doubling your descent speed so you reach the seafloor in roughly half the time. Once you touch the bottom, Diver takes over, freezing your air bar and slowly restoring any air you lost on the way down.
This combination eliminates the two biggest frustrations of underwater exploration at once. You no longer spend an awkward amount of time slowly drifting toward the floor, and once you arrive, drowning is simply not a concern as long as you stay on the ground. The Diver ability scales meaningfully with investment: at the base rolled stat of 0.2 to 0.4 seconds per second, recovery is gradual but reliable; at max ability level 10, restoration reaches 1.2 seconds per second, which refills a fully depleted 15-second air bar in roughly 12 seconds.

Both abilities need to be researched via constellation puzzles before they activate. If you can only afford to unlock one first, start with Diver: stopping air consumption is more immediately impactful than the speed gain from Anchor. Once both are researched, the Charm is particularly powerful for looting Shipwrecks, Ocean Ruins, and Buried Treasure, since you can walk between objectives on the seafloor without ever surfacing.
The Charm Of Sinking is one of the few Relics that essentially removes a core game threat rather than just mitigating it. For players who regularly explore ocean structures or play modpacks with expanded ocean biomes, it is one of the most consistently useful necklace-slot options available.
Abilities
The Charm Of Sinking has 2 abilities: Anchor and Diver. With a maximum Relic level of 10, you can earn up to 10 Upgrade Points to distribute across these abilities.
Both abilities are available at Relic level 0, so you do not need to level the Charm before unlocking them through research. Since Anchor is a passive ability with a maximum level of 0, every Upgrade Point you earn goes directly into Diver.
Anchor

Doubles the player’s sinking speed.
Anchor is a passive ability that requires no activation and cannot be leveled up. Once you research its constellation, you automatically sink through water at double speed any time you are submerged. The faster descent is most noticeable in deep ocean biomes, where the seafloor is far below the surface, and when diving into tall structures like Ocean Monuments or Shipwrecks where every second of descent counts.
Since Anchor has a maximum level of 0, researching it is the only step required. There are no stats to roll and no Upgrade Points to invest. The ability is always active while underwater once unlocked.
Anchor unlocks at Relic level 0 and costs 1 Upgrade Point per level, with a maximum ability level of 0.
Diver

While the player stands on the underwater floor, it blocks air consumption and slowly restores its supply by X seconds every second.
Diver activates automatically whenever you are standing on the underwater floor with the ability researched. Two effects apply simultaneously: your air consumption is completely blocked so your breath bar freezes in place, and your air supply is slowly restored at a rate of X seconds every second. Even if you arrive at the bottom with your bar nearly empty from the swim down, you will recover without surfacing.
At the base rolled stat of 0.2 to 0.4 seconds per second, restoration is gradual but enough to prevent drowning while you explore. At the maximum ability level of 10, the rate reaches 1.2 seconds per second. Since the standard Minecraft air supply equals 15 seconds, that means a completely empty bar refills in roughly 12 seconds while standing on the seafloor. Even a low roll of 0.2 at max level still provides 0.6 seconds per second of restoration, enough to recover in about 25 seconds.
Diver unlocks at Relic level 0 and costs 1 Upgrade Point per level, with a maximum ability level of 10.

Constellations
Before you can use an ability, it must first be researched. Each ability has a constellation puzzle that you need to solve by connecting stars hidden beneath fog. When the constellation matches the background pattern, the ability unlocks automatically.
The Charm Of Sinking has two constellations, one for each ability. The Anchor constellation contains 12 stars and costs 600 Minecraft Experience to fully reveal. The Diver constellation contains 6 stars and costs 300 Minecraft Experience to fully reveal. Both abilities must be researched separately, and neither is active until its constellation is solved.
If you’re stuck on a puzzle, you can purchase hints for 50 Minecraft Experience each. Alternatively, reveal the entire constellation instantly for 600 Minecraft Experience for Anchor or 300 Minecraft Experience for Diver.
Experience Sources
Relic Experience is required to level up a Relic, gain Upgrade Points, and spend those points on upgrading abilities. The Charm Of Sinking offers 1 way to earn Relic Experience.
You earn +1 Relic Experience each time you touch the underwater floor while the Diver ability is active and your air supply is not already full. The experience triggers once per descent: you must swim down from a non-grounded position, then land on the floor. Repeated dives reward you consistently, and since Anchor makes reaching the seafloor fast, the Charm levels up quickly with regular ocean use.
Like all Relics, the Charm Of Sinking benefits from Experience Spreading. Whenever any equipped Relic gains experience, 25% of that amount is shared with all other Relics in your inventory.
Experience Spreading is a passive mechanic that helps level up Relics you aren’t actively using. If you gain 100 Relic Experience on one item, every other Relic in your inventory receives 25 bonus experience. This makes it worthwhile to carry multiple Relics even before you can use them all.
Leveling
The Charm Of Sinking has a maximum level of 10, providing 10 Upgrade Points total. Each level requires progressively more Minecraft Experience, as shown in the table below.
XP Cost
Total XP
Reaching level 10 requires a total of 5,500 Relic Experience, equivalent to approximately 50 Minecraft player levels.
Since Anchor cannot be leveled, every Upgrade Point goes into Diver, so there are no allocation decisions to make. Focus on reaching Diver level 5 as a useful early milestone: with a max-rolled stat, the air restoration hits 0.8 seconds per second at that point, which refills a nearly empty bar in under 20 seconds on the seafloor.
From there, continuing to max level 10 is worth the investment if you regularly explore deep ocean structures, pushing restoration to 1.2 seconds per second. The XP source fires once per dive, so frequent ocean runs are the fastest path to level 10.
Related Relics
The Charm Of Sinking pairs naturally with the
Amphibian Boot (Feet, Relics core), which increases your swim speed over time and gives you a passive chance to skip air consumption while actively swimming. While the Charm handles descent and floor breathing, the Amphibian Boot covers the gaps between structures, letting you move across the seafloor faster without burning through your air bar before Diver kicks in.
For underwater combat, the
Drowned Belt (Belt, Relics core) is an excellent companion: it boosts your damage output while submerged and synergizes with
tridents, converting the extended bottom time the Charm provides into a real offensive advantage against
Drowned and
Guardians.
If you haven’t found the Charm Of Sinking yet, the
Cross Necklace (Necklace, Artifacts-Compat) is a solid defensive alternative in the same slot, extending your invulnerability window after taking damage, which is helpful in the dangerous environments where you’d normally want the Charm.
The
Panic Necklace (Necklace, Artifacts-Compat) is another necklace-slot option, granting a speed boost based on nearby hostile mobs, which can be useful in Ocean Monuments where
Elder Guardians are a constant threat. Neither replaces the Charm’s breathing protection, but both offer meaningful necklace-slot utility while you search for it.
Config
To edit the configuration for an Artifact-compatible Relic, update the enabledExtendedConfigs: false option within relics.yaml in your Minecraft config folder by changing the value to true.
After relaunching Minecraft, a rarcompat folder will appear in the config directory. Inside, look for and edit charm_of_sinking.yaml.
