Straw is one of the materials implemented by Farmer’s Delight and is helpful for creating items like Lead, Rope, and Organic Compost.
How to Get Straw
To collect Straw, you must first obtain a Knife, another item provided by Farmer’s Delight. Five different Knives are available, with their tiers ranging from Flint to Netherite. Simply place an item (such as a Diamond, Iron Ingot etc) on top of a Stick inside a Crafting Table to create a Knife.
When holding a Knife, you can hit tufts of Grass (including Tall Grass), which will give them a chance of dropping Straw alongside Seeds like they do in vanilla Minecraft. This is the quickest and easiest way of obtaining Straw, but you can also get it from Wheat and Rice, with a higher drop rate.
Knives do have other uses, especially when harvesting animals. If you kill an animal with a Knife, it’s guaranteed to give its secondary drop, such as Feathers from Chickens, or Leather from Cows. Or Knives can be paired with a Cutting Board to process ingredients, and even given Enchantments.
Uses for Straw
Straw has many uses, with the first being that four can be combined in a crafting grid to create Canvas. Canvas creates Signs, Tatami Blocks, Scaffolding, Baskets, Paintings, Books, and Canvas Rugs.
Two Straw can be combined to create four Ropes, allowing you to ascend and descend vertically into locations such as ravines without relying on Ladders. Ropes can be turned into Safety Nets, which can be landed on without taking fall damage.
One of the most essential uses of Straw is to create Organic Compost. When Organic Compost is placed down, it will decompose, turning it into Rich Soil over time. Crops grown on Rich Soil will be immune to mob trampling and also have their growth randomly boosted over time.
