Mobs

Sludge

Estimated reading: 5 minutes

The Sludge is a hostile slime-type mob added by the Deeper and Darker mod that bounces through the Blooming Caverns biome. This sculk-infused variant of the vanilla Slime features the same size-based splitting mechanics while dropping Resonarium, a valuable crafting material for mid-tier equipment.

With faster movement speed than standard Slimes and exclusive spawning in the Blooming Caverns, Sludges represent a key farming target for players seeking Resonarium to craft upgraded Iron-tier armor and tools.

Spawning

Sludges spawn exclusively in the Blooming Caverns biome within the Otherside dimension. This lush, glowing biome provides their sole natural habitat, making Blooming Caverns exploration essential for Resonarium acquisition.

With a spawn weight of 6 and group sizes of 1-2, Sludges appear moderately frequently compared to other Blooming Caverns mobs. Their distinctive bouncing movement and unique sounds make them easy to locate once you enter the biome.

Behavior

Sludges behave identically to vanilla Slimes, using the same AI patterns and movement mechanics. They hop toward players when detected and deal contact damage upon collision. Their bouncing movement creates distinctive sounds that alert players to their presence.

Size Mechanics

Like vanilla Slimes, Sludges spawn in three size categories: large, medium, and small. Larger Sludges deal more damage and have more health, while smaller ones are weaker but more numerous after splitting.

When a large or medium Sludge is killed, it splits into 2-4 smaller Sludges. This splitting continues until the smallest size is reached. Only the smallest Sludges (size 1) drop Resonarium when killed.

Size-Based Stats

The base stats (16 HP, 4 damage) scale with size following vanilla Slime formulas:Large: Higher health and damageMedium: Moderate health and damageSmall: Lowest stats, but drops Resonarium

Movement

Sludges move significantly faster than vanilla Slimes with a base speed of 0.6, double the standard Slime speed. This increased mobility makes them more dangerous in enclosed spaces and harder to kite effectively.

Their jumping attacks propel them toward players with each hop. The Blooming Moss Block particles that appear when they land distinguish them visually from other slime-type mobs.

Drops

Sludges drop Resonarium, a crafting material used to create mid-tier Resonarium equipment. Only the smallest Sludges (size 1) drop this material, requiring players to fully defeat splitting Sludges to obtain resources.

Resonarium combines with Scutes to create Resonarium Plates, which upgrade Iron equipment to Resonarium tier. The crafting recipe requires 4 Resonarium and 4 Scutes per plate, making Sludge farming essential for equipment progression.

Resonarium Uses

Resonarium serves as the primary material for mid-tier equipment upgrades in Deeper and Darker. Combined with Scutes, it creates Resonarium Plates used in smithing recipes to upgrade Iron armor and tools.

The full Resonarium equipment set includes armor (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) and tools (sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe). This provides a progression step between Iron and Diamond/Netherite tiers.

Combat Strategies

Fighting Sludges requires similar tactics to vanilla Slimes, with adjustments for their increased speed. Their predictable jumping attacks create windows for counterattacks between hops.

Engagement Tactics

Time your attacks between Sludge hops. After each jump, there’s a brief pause before the next leap where you can land hits safely. Backpedal while attacking to maintain distance from their contact damage.

Be prepared for splitting. When killing larger Sludges, immediately back away to avoid being surrounded by the 2-4 smaller Sludges that spawn. Clear the smaller ones before engaging additional large Sludges.

Farming Efficiency

Use Looting-enchanted weapons to maximize Resonarium yields. Since only size 1 Sludges drop materials, you must fully defeat each Sludge through all splitting stages to obtain resources.

The Blooming Caverns biome’s relative brightness compared to other Otherside biomes makes Sludge farming less hazardous. However, watch for Angler Fish in water areas and Sculk Snappers that share this biome.

Farming Tip

Sweeping Edge enchantment helps clear groups of small Sludges efficiently after larger ones split. A single sweep attack can damage multiple tiny Sludges simultaneously, speeding up Resonarium collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Sludges spawn?

Sludges spawn exclusively in the Blooming Caverns biome within the Otherside dimension. They do not appear in any other biome or dimension. Look for this lush, glowing biome to find Sludges for Resonarium farming.

What do Sludges drop?

Sludges drop 0-1 Resonarium, with Looting increasing the maximum by 1 per level (up to 0-4 with Looting III). Only the smallest Sludges (size 1) drop Resonarium – larger ones must be killed and split down to size 1 first.

What is Resonarium used for?

Resonarium combines with Scutes (4 of each) to create Resonarium Plates. These plates upgrade Iron equipment to Resonarium tier through smithing recipes. The full set includes armor and tools that provide stats between Iron and Diamond tiers.

How do Sludges compare to vanilla Slimes?

Sludges have identical base health (16 HP) and damage (4) to vanilla Slimes, but move twice as fast (0.6 vs 0.3 speed). They use the same size-based splitting mechanics but drop Resonarium instead of Slimeballs, and spawn only in the Blooming Caverns.

Do all Sludge sizes drop Resonarium?

No, only the smallest Sludges (size 1) drop Resonarium. Large and medium Sludges split into smaller ones when killed but don’t drop materials themselves. You must defeat Sludges through all splitting stages to collect Resonarium.
