Soul Dust

Soul Dust is a common crafting material added by the Deeper and Darker mod. Dropped by Sculk Snappers and Sculk Leeches throughout The Otherside dimension, this resource is essential for crafting the Soul Elytra and Soundproof Glass.

Unlike the rarer Soul Crystal, Soul Dust drops from common mobs that spawn frequently in The Otherside, making it relatively easy to stockpile during regular exploration. The 4 Soul Dust required for a Soul Elytra can typically be gathered within minutes of entering the dimension.

Obtaining

Soul Dust is obtained primarily from mob drops in The Otherside dimension. Two different sculk creatures drop this material, with Sculk Snappers being the more reliable source. Ancient Temple chests provide a supplementary source for players exploring structures.

Sculk Snapper Drops

Sculk Snappers drop 1 Soul Dust guaranteed upon death. The Looting enchantment increases this by 0-1 per level, meaning Looting III can yield up to 4 Soul Dust per kill. Since Sculk Snappers are common throughout The Otherside, they serve as the primary farming target.

Sculk Leech Drops

Sculk Leeches drop 0-1 Soul Dust when killed (not guaranteed). The Looting enchantment adds 0-1 per level, allowing Looting III to yield up to 4 Soul Dust, though drops can also be zero. Sculk Leeches spawn from the Stalker’s ring attack or from Ancient Vases, making them a secondary source.

While less reliable than Sculk Snappers, Sculk Leeches encountered during Stalker fights or vase farming provide bonus Soul Dust without additional hunting effort.

Ancient Temple Chests

Two chest types in Ancient Temples contain Soul Dust. Basement chests offer 3-7 Soul Dust with a moderate drop rate, providing the most significant quantities per chest.

This makes basement exploration valuable for bulk Soul Dust collection alongside other loot. Fountain chests contain 2-5 Soul Dust at a lower drop rate. While less efficient than basement chests, fountain loot adds to your total during temple runs.

Usage

Soul Dust is used in two crafting recipes. Both recipes consume significant quantities, so plan to gather at least 8 Soul Dust if you want both the Soul Elytra and a batch of Soundproof Glass.

Soul Elytra

The Soul Elytra recipe requires 2 Soul Dust placed in the left and right slot. Combined with 4 Sculk Bones in the corners, 1 Soul Crystal at the bottom, and a vanilla Elytra in the center, this creates the upgraded flight item with built-in boost ability.

Soundproof Glass

Soundproof Glass requires 4 Soul Dust in the corners surrounding 4 Soul Crystals and 1 Glass block. This recipe produces 16 Soundproof Glass blocks, making it efficient for large builds despite the Soul Crystal cost.

Farming Strategy

Soul Dust farming is passive during normal Otherside exploration. Sculk Snappers appear frequently, especially in the Deeplands biome, and killing them as you encounter them naturally accumulates dust without dedicated farming runs.

For targeted farming, the Deeplands biome offers the highest Sculk Snapper density. Groups of 3-6 spawn regularly, and their neutral behavior means you can engage them on your terms. Equip a Looting III sword before entering The Otherside to maximize drops from every encounter.

Ancient Temple runs also generate Soul Dust through chest loot and Sculk Leeches that spawn from vases. While farming temples primarily for other materials like Soul Crystals or Sculk Transmitters, the Soul Dust accumulates as a bonus.
