Sunken City

Leviathan

Estimated reading: 6 minutes

The Leviathan is the ultimate aquatic boss in L_Ender’s Cataclysm mod, serving as the primary antagonist of the Sunken City structure and one of the most challenging encounters in the entire modification. This massive sea serpent has a peculiar appearance, featuring a dragon-like head attached to a fish-like fin, along with four menacing tentacles that obscure its true nature.

The creature’s deceptive exterior can split apart into four segments, revealing the real head hidden within this aquatic nightmare. With 400 HP and over 10 different powerful attacks, the Leviathan stands as the ultimate challenge in underwater combat.

The Leviathan

Its design requires specialized preparation and equipment, making it impossible for unprepared players who lack the right aquatic combat gear and a strategic understanding of its intricate attack patterns.

Summoning

To summon the Leviathan, players must craft and sacrifice an Abyssal Sacrifice at the Altar of Abyss, located in the dome centerpiece of the Sunken City.

Creating the Abyssal Sacrifice requires several rare components, including an Athame dropped by Deepling Warlocks, Coral Chunks obtained from defeating Coralssus, blocks made from various precious materials, a Heart of the Sea, and a Nautilus Shell.

These complex summoning requirements ensure that players have thoroughly explored the Sunken City and defeated its various inhabitants before facing this ultimate challenge.

The Altar of Abyss remains unbreakable to prevent players from relocating the boss fight to more advantageous positions. This design choice forces the encounter to take place entirely underwater within the structure’s confines, emphasizing the aquatic nature of the battle and preventing traditional land-based combat strategies.

Attacks

The Leviathan has over ten distinct attacks, categorized into basic abilities and more complex, devastating maneuvers. The basic attacks include Tentacle Smack, which involves the boss bending a random tentacle backward before thrusting it forward to deal 18 HP damage.

Another basic attack is Masticate, a brutal bite that tears the creature’s face open, delivering 32 HP damage and stunning the target for 5 seconds. These fundamental abilities form the foundation of the Leviathan’s combat repertoire and serve as setups for more dangerous combinations.

The creature creates Abyssal Mines by hunching over, planting its tentacles, and roaring while shaking side to side. This process generates contact-triggered explosives that deal 5 HP damage and inflict Abyssal Fear for 10 seconds.

Abyssal Mines

Lingual Suppression involves the Leviathan using its long tongue to latch onto targets and pull them into its mouth, initially dealing 6 HP damage. A combination of Masticate and Tentacle Smack attacks follows this. Tail Torrent involves the boss rapidly spinning its tail in a 180-degree arc, resulting in 23 HP damage and inflicting Bone Fracture for 10 seconds, which severely reduces the target’s movement speed.

Advanced attacks include Dimensional Tear, one of the boss’s most lethal abilities that tears the fabric of reality to create black hole effects, dealing 10 HP repeatedly before exploding for approximately 30 HP point-blank damage.

Lingual Suppression

Frontal Rush sees the Leviathan position itself at a distance before swimming forward at blinding speeds, breaking through blocks, including Obsidian, while dealing 20 HP repeatedly and inflicting brief Darkness.

Bellowing Lasers involves the boss positioning itself away while tentacles cover its face, charging up to unleash continuous or burst laser shots that deal 20 HP repeatedly. Interdimensional Beams summon devastating energy attacks across the arena, inflicting Darkness while dealing 20 HP repeatedly and applying Abyssal Burn for 7 seconds with each hit.

Beam Attack

Repressive Disintegration represents perhaps the most feared attack, where tentacles surround and immobilize the target, locking them in place while continuous laser beams drain their health over several seconds, with no possible escape. Portal Relocation serves as a utility ability allowing the Leviathan to teleport without dealing damage, though players can use the departure portal themselves for tactical repositioning.

Phase Transition

When the Leviathan’s health is reduced to zero, it immediately enters Phase Two by regenerating to 50% health and unlocking a new ability: Homing Warps. These projectiles relentlessly follow players, inflicting 4 HP damage and applying Abyssal Fear for 5 seconds.

Leviathan Phase Two

The Leviathan also randomly releases these projectiles during other attacks. In Phase Two, the boss’s attack frequency and aggression significantly increase, leading to a much more intense combat experience that tests players’ endurance and resource management.

The phase transition is a crucial moment in gameplay where unprepared players often suffer defeat. The sudden health regeneration of opponents and their increased attack patterns can overwhelm those who have used too many resources in the initial phase.

Homing Warps

To succeed, players need to strategically conserve their resources and understand the timing of the transition.

Recommended Equipment

Successful Leviathan encounters require Protection IV Netherite Armor, Depth Strider III Boots, and either Impaling V, Riptide III Tridents, or Coral Bardiches for optimal underwater combat effectiveness.

Blessed Amethyst Crab Meat proves essential for immunity to Darkness, Abyssal Fear, and Abyssal Burn effects that the Leviathan inflicts throughout the battle. Additional preparation should include Golden Apples, Water Breathing potions, Night Vision potions, and various buffing consumables.

Mobility represents the most crucial factor in determining battle outcomes, with Depth Strider and Riptide enchantments serving as mandatory equipment rather than optional upgrades. The underwater environment severely penalizes players lacking proper aquatic mobility, making these enchantments the difference between victory and inevitable defeat.

Rewards

Defeating the Leviathan grants several valuable rewards, including Tidal Claws, an Abyssal Egg, and possibly a Leviathan music disc.

Tidal Claws serve dual purposes as melee weapons, dealing 8 HP damage, and as grappling hooks that can reach up to 32 blocks, allowing players to latch onto mobs and enhancing mobility for further exploration. Additionally, the weapon’s ranged attack can chain hits to up to five entities while inflicting Abyssal Burn, providing effective crowd control capabilities.

Tidal Claws & Abyssal Egg

The Abyssal Egg hatches into a Baby Leviathan pet after being placed in water for approximately one full Minecraft day. Players can tame this powerful companion using Tropical Fish, allowing them to have a loyal ally that can bite enemies and fire laser beams during combat. The Baby Leviathan is also transportable in Water Buckets, making it convenient for exploration.
