Primordial Armor Set

Estimated reading: 6 minutes

Primordial Armor is a three-piece armor set in Alex’s Caves crafted from dinosaur materials found in the Primordial Caves. This prehistoric armor set provides moderate protection while offering a unique bonus: enhanced nutrition from eating raw meat.

The set consists of the Primordial Helmet, Primordial Tunic, and Primordial Pants. Unlike most armor sets in Minecraft, Primordial Armor has no boots—the set contains only three pieces. Each piece worn increases the hunger and saturation restored when eating raw meat, making it ideal for prehistoric survival where cooked food may be scarce.

Crafted from Tough Hide (dropped by Grottoceratops) and Bone Blocks, with the helmet also requiring Heavy Bones, this armor provides 10 armor points when wearing all three pieces. The set can be repaired using Tough Hide at an anvil.

Crafting

Each piece of Primordial Armor uses Tough Hide as the primary material, with Bone Blocks providing structural support. The Primordial Helmet requires 1 Tough Hide in the center, 2 Bone Blocks on either side of the top row, and 2 Heavy Bones in the bottom corners. This creates a skull-like design with horned protrusions.

The Primordial Tunic uses 6 Tough Hide filling the middle and bottom rows, with 2 Bone Blocks in the top corners and an empty center for the head opening. The Primordial Pants require 5 Tough Hide arranged in a pants pattern (full top row plus the leg portions) with 2 Bone Blocks in the bottom corners.

In total, crafting the complete set requires 12 Tough Hide, 6 Bone Blocks, and 2 Heavy Bones. Tough Hide drops from Grottoceratops, while Heavy Bones drop from larger dinosaurs like Tremorsaurus, Relicheirus, and Atlatitan. Bone Blocks are crafted from 9 Bone Meal each.

Raw Meat Bonus

The signature feature of Primordial Armor is its raw meat nutrition boost. Each piece of Primordial Armor worn adds +1 hunger and +0.125 saturation when eating any raw meat. With all three pieces equipped (helmet, tunic, and pants), you gain +3 hunger and +0.375 saturation per raw meat consumed.

This bonus applies to all items tagged as raw meat, including vanilla meats like Raw Beef, Raw Porkchop, Raw Chicken, Raw Mutton, and Raw Rabbit, as well as mod-added raw meats. The bonus significantly improves the value of raw meat as an emergency food source, reducing the need to cook food while exploring the Primordial Caves.

The bonus stacks with the food’s base nutrition. For example, Raw Beef normally provides 3 hunger and 0.3 saturation. With a full Primordial Armor set, it provides 6 hunger and 0.675 saturation instead, making it nearly as nutritious as Cooked Beef without requiring a furnace.

Dinosaur Chop Bonus

The raw meat bonus also applies to Raw Dinosaur Chops. Each bite of a raw chop with full Primordial Armor gives +3 hunger and +0.375 saturation on top of the base 3 hunger and 0.2 saturation. This makes raw Dinosaur Chops a viable food source without cooking, perfect for extended Primordial Caves expeditions.

Armor Protection

Primordial Armor provides 10 armor points total when wearing all three pieces. The Primordial Helmet provides 3 armor points, the Primordial Tunic provides 4 armor points, and the Primordial Pants provide 3 armor points. The set has 0 armor toughness, making it roughly equivalent to iron armor in raw protection.

The armor uses a durability multiplier of 20, placing it between iron (15) and diamond (33) in terms of durability. All pieces can be repaired at an anvil using Tough Hide, making repair materials easily farmable from Grottoceratops.

Since the set lacks boots, you can combine it with other footwear like Diamond Boots or Netherite Boots for additional protection, or use specialty boots like the Diving Boots from the Abyssal Chasm or Rainbounce Boots from the Candy Cavity.

Obtaining Materials

Tough Hide is the primary material for Primordial Armor and drops exclusively from Grottoceratops. Each Grottoceratops can drop 1-2 Tough Hide when killed. Grottoceratops are peaceful herbivores unless provoked, so you can breed them with Tree Stars to create a sustainable Tough Hide farm. They spawn throughout the Primordial Caves biome.

Heavy Bones drop from larger dinosaurs: Tremorsaurus, Relicheirus, and Atlatitan. These are more challenging to obtain since Tremorsaurus and Relicheirus are dangerous combatants. However, you only need 2 Heavy Bones for the helmet. Heavy Bones also craft into 3 Bone Meal each, providing an alternative source if you have excess.

Bone Blocks require 9 Bone Meal each (or 3 bones), and you need 6 total for the complete set. You can craft Bone Meal from regular bones, Heavy Bones, or collect it from composter outputs. Alternatively, find Bone Blocks naturally in Soul Sand Valley biomes or fossil structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much armor does Primordial Armor give?
›

The full Primordial Armor set provides 10 armor points (5 armor icons): Helmet gives 3, Tunic gives 4, and Pants give 3. The set has no armor toughness. There are no Primordial Boots, so combine the set with boots from other sources for maximum protection.

What is the raw meat bonus?
›

Each piece of Primordial Armor adds +1 hunger and +0.125 saturation when eating raw meat. With all three pieces, you get +3 hunger and +0.375 saturation per raw meat. This applies to all raw meats including beef, porkchop, chicken, and Dinosaur Chops, making uncooked food much more nutritious.

Where do I get Tough Hide?
›

Tough Hide drops from Grottoceratops when killed (1-2 per kill). Grottoceratops are the triceratops-like dinosaurs found throughout the Primordial Caves. They’re neutral and won’t attack unless provoked. You can breed them with Tree Stars to create a farm for sustainable Tough Hide collection.

How do I repair Primordial Armor?
›

Repair Primordial Armor at an anvil using Tough Hide. Each Tough Hide restores a portion of the armor’s durability. Since Tough Hide drops from farmable Grottoceratops, maintaining your armor is straightforward once you have a breeding pair established.

Why are there no Primordial Boots?
›

The Primordial Armor set intentionally excludes boots, containing only a helmet, tunic, and pants. This lets you equip specialty boots like Diving Boots or Rainbounce Boots for their unique effects while still benefiting from the raw meat bonus. You can also use Netherite or Diamond Boots for maximum protection.

How much material do I need for the full set?
›

Crafting the complete Primordial Armor set requires 12 Tough Hide, 6 Bone Blocks, and 2 Heavy Bones. The helmet needs 1 Tough Hide, 2 Bone Blocks, and 2 Heavy Bones. The tunic needs 6 Tough Hide and 2 Bone Blocks. The pants need 5 Tough Hide and 2 Bone Blocks.
