Luxtructosaurus
The Luxtructosaurus is a massive undead dinosaur boss added by Alex’s Caves. This kaiju-sized creature lurks within the Volcanoes of the Primordial Caves biome, and awakening it triggers a catastrophic eruption that rains fiery tephra across the battlefield.
With 600 health and 20 armor, the Luxtructosaurus is one of the toughest bosses in Alex’s Caves. Its attacks deal devastating area damage, and when enraged, it gains fire-based abilities that can quickly overwhelm unprepared players. Defeating this ancient terror is essential for unlocking the Amber Monolith’s ability to spawn new dinosaur species.
Upon death, the Luxtructosaurus drops 7-11 Tectonic Shards, the key material for crafting the powerful Extinction Spear.
Summoning
The Luxtructosaurus does not spawn naturally. To summon it, throw an Ominous Catalyst into the top of a Volcano structure within the Primordial Caves biome. The Volcanic Core block at the center of the volcano attracts dropped Ominous Catalysts from up to 20 blocks away, pulling them toward the lava.
When the Ominous Catalyst enters the volcanic core, the Luxtructosaurus erupts from the top of the volcano in a dramatic summoning animation. Once summoned, the boss cannot be re-summoned for 20 minutes (24000 ticks), even with another Ominous Catalyst.
The moment the boss spawns, volcanic eruption begins. The sky turns red with ash, and the volcano continuously launches Tephra projectiles at nearby players throughout the entire fight. These flaming rocks explode on impact, adding environmental hazards to an already difficult battle.
Behavior
The Luxtructosaurus is always hostile and will pursue players from up to 256 blocks away. As a kaiju-class mob, it towers over the terrain and destroys blocks in its path as it walks. The boss has two states: normal and enraged, each with different abilities and visual effects.
Normal State
In its normal state, the Luxtructosaurus uses three primary melee attacks based on distance. At close range (within 4 blocks of attack distance), it randomly selects between a Stomp, Kick, or Tail Whip attack.
The Stomp attack deals about 14 damage to all entities within 10 blocks and has strong knockback. The Kick attack deals about 10 damage within 5 blocks, launching targets into the air. The Tail Whip attack sweeps a massive 12-block radius for 12 damage and can disable shields on hit.
If the Luxtructosaurus cannot reach its target, it performs a massive leap to close the distance. The landing deals 6 damage to anything within 10 blocks. This jump has a cooldown of 5-15 seconds.
Enraged State
The Luxtructosaurus becomes enraged when it drops below 25% health (150 HP) or uses its Roar attack. When enraged, it glows with volcanic heat and drips lava particles. This state lasts 25-35 seconds before the boss calms down, unless it remains below 25% health.
In enraged state, the Tail Whip attack sets targets on fire. The Stomp attack creates expanding fissures of Primal Magma that spread outward from the impact point, leaving dangerous terrain that persists after the fight. Additionally, the boss gains the Flame Breath attack, which sweeps fire in a 13-block cone for about 3 seconds, dealing 3 damage per hit and setting targets ablaze.
When the Luxtructosaurus stomps while enraged, the attack creates permanent fissures filled with Primal Magma. These spread in rings around the impact point and deal fire damage to anyone who falls in. Watch your footing during the enraged phase.
Roar Attack
Periodically during combat, the Luxtructosaurus throws its head back and unleashes a deafening roar. This 3-second animation triggers the enraged state and causes the volcano to launch Tephra projectiles that rain down around the arena. The roar also terrifies nearby mobs, causing them to flee and clear their targets.
Damage Resistances
The Luxtructosaurus has several built-in damage reduction mechanics. Projectiles deal only 45% of their normal damage. After taking any hit, the boss gains 65% damage reduction for 0.5 seconds, making burst damage less effective. Dinosaur attackers (like tamed Tremorsauruses) deal only 65% damage, Golems deal 50%, and Wardens deal only 25%.
Because of the post-hit damage reduction, consistent medium-damage attacks work better than burst damage. Space out your hits rather than attacking as fast as possible, and prioritize melee weapons over ranged since projectiles are heavily penalized.
Drops
When defeated, the Luxtructosaurus dissolves into ash over a 6-second death animation. Upon completing this animation, it drops 7-11 Tectonic Shards. The Looting enchantment adds 0-1 additional shards per level.
Tectonic Shards are used to craft the Extinction Spear, the ultimate weapon of the Primordial Caves. This spear channels the spirits of dinosaurs and features multiple special abilities including a blocking stance that summons Grottoceratops spirits and a thrown attack that calls forth a Subterranodon spirit.
Defeating the Luxtructosaurus for the first time also unlocks a special effect: Amber Monoliths throughout the Primordial Caves will begin spawning a new dinosaur species that was previously extinct. This effect is permanent and shared across the entire world.
Combat Strategy
Prepare thoroughly before summoning the Luxtructosaurus. Bring Netherite armor with Protection IV and Fire Resistance potions to survive the fire-based attacks. Golden Apples and Totems of Undying provide essential emergency healing. A strong melee weapon like a Netherite Sword with Sharpness V is more effective than bows due to the boss’s projectile resistance.
Clear the arena around the volcano before the fight. The Luxtructosaurus destroys blocks as it moves and attacks, so create open space with minimal terrain hazards. Remove any valuable structures from the area, as they will likely be destroyed during the battle.
Each attack has visual and audio cues. The Stomp is preceded by the boss rearing up on its hind legs. The Tail Whip shows the boss rotating its body. The Roar is telegraphed by the head tilting upward. Learn these tells to dodge or block appropriately.
Stay mobile throughout the fight. The Luxtructosaurus’s attacks have large areas of effect, and standing still guarantees you’ll be hit by multiple attacks in quick succession. Sprint away from Stomps, circle around Tail Whips, and maintain medium range to avoid Kicks while staying close enough for melee attacks between the boss’s cooldowns.
When the boss becomes enraged below 25% health, prioritize avoiding the Stomp attack. The Primal Magma fissures it creates are permanent and will restrict your movement for the rest of the fight. If you see the boss rear up while glowing, sprint away immediately before the impact creates dangerous terrain.
Watch the sky during the entire fight. The volcanic eruption continuously launches Tephra at players, and these projectiles explode on impact. Keep moving and don’t stand in one spot for too long, or you’ll be hit by falling rocks in addition to the boss’s attacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Throw an Ominous Catalyst into the top of a Volcano in the Primordial Caves biome. The Volcanic Core will attract the item and trigger the boss summoning. The Ominous Catalyst can be crafted or found as loot in the Primordial Caves.
Netherite armor with Protection IV is recommended. Bring Fire Resistance potions, Golden Apples, and a Totem of Undying. Use a melee weapon like a Netherite Sword with Sharpness V, as the boss takes only 45% damage from projectiles. A shield helps against Kicks but will be disabled by Tail Whips.
Yes, but there is a 20-minute cooldown after the boss dies before you can summon it again at the same volcano. You can find other volcanoes in the Primordial Caves to fight additional Luxtructosauruses without waiting for the cooldown.
Tectonic Shards are used to craft the Extinction Spear, the most powerful weapon from the Primordial Caves. This unique spear has multiple abilities including summoning dinosaur spirits for attacks and defense. It’s worth defeating the Luxtructosaurus multiple times to collect enough shards.
After your first Luxtructosaurus kill, a message appears stating that new forms are taking shape in Amber Monoliths. This permanently unlocks a new dinosaur species that will begin spawning from Amber Monoliths throughout all Primordial Caves in your world.
You can use ranged weapons, but they deal only 45% damage due to the boss’s projectile resistance. Melee weapons are significantly more effective. If you must use ranged attacks, use them to maintain damage while repositioning rather than as your primary damage source.
