Red Wine is a drinkable item from [Let’s Do] Vinery that grants Slow Falling when consumed, letting you descend from any height without taking fall damage.

A freshly fermented bottle lasts 90 seconds, and the effect duration grows as the wine ages in the game world, eventually reaching up to 12 minutes and 30 seconds for a very old vintage. Drinking it returns the empty Wine Bottle to your inventory, so the glass itself is never consumed.

Obtaining

You can only produce Red Wine in the Fermentation Barrel. The process begins with Red Grapes grown on Grapevine plants. To make Red Grapejuice, add Red Grapes to a Grapevine Pot, trample them to crush the fruit, then use an empty Wine Bottle on the pot to collect the juice you need for fermentation.

Red Wine

Fill your Fermentation Barrel with Red Grapejuice, add one Sugar and an empty Wine Bottle, then wait about 5 minutes for fermentation to finish. One Red Wine bottle emerges from each completed cycle. Only standard Red Grapejuice works here; the biome-specific varieties from Savanna, Taiga, and Jungle Red Grapes produce distinct juices used in other wines like Strad Wine and Cristel Wine.

When farming Red Grapes, growing them on Grapevine Stems rather than directly in the ground yields significantly more fruit per harvest. Experienced players report getting four to six grapes from a stem-grown vine compared to one or two from a ground-planted bush. Setting up even a small row of stems early on produces enough grapes to keep your Fermentation Barrel running continuously.

Usage

Right-clicking with Red Wine in hand drinks it and immediately applies Slow Falling. This effect prevents fall damage and slows your descent to a gentle float, making it invaluable when building at height, descending cliffs, or surviving unexpected drops in caves. The empty Wine Bottle returns to your inventory automatically after you drink, and if your inventory is full it drops at your feet instead.

Wine Aging

Red Wine records the in-game day it was brewed and ages automatically from that point forward. Every 24 in-game days count as one wine year, and the Slow Falling duration increases by about 10 seconds per wine year. Duration starts at 90 seconds for fresh wine and caps at 12 minutes and 30 seconds, reaching around 6 minutes and 30 seconds after 30 wine years (720 game days).

Hovering over a Red Wine bottle in your inventory shows its current age, its effect level, and how many game days remain until the next upgrade. The effect level increases every 6 wine years as part of the aging progression. Aging happens passively based on in-game time, but bottles must be stored in a dedicated Vinery storage block like a Wine Rack or Wine Box; bottles left in a standard Minecraft chest do not age.

Further Uses

Red Wine is also a required ingredient when brewing Bottle Mojang Noir in the Fermentation Barrel. That recipe combines Red Wine with a Honey Bottle and a Cherry alongside Red Grapejuice, producing a special wine with its own distinct properties.

Tips

Drink Red Wine just before jumping or falling from height rather than before climbing up. A fresh bottle’s 90 seconds of Slow Falling is more than enough time to reach the ground safely from even the tallest structures in the game.

One bottle of Red Grapejuice adds 25 units of juice to the Fermentation Barrel, and each Red Wine craft consumes only 10 units. This means a single bottle of grapejuice can fuel two full fermentation cycles with 5 units remaining, so stocking your barrel efficiently requires fewer grapes than you might expect.

Brew Red Wine in batches and transfer the bottles directly into Wine Racks while you explore. Aging only progresses inside dedicated Vinery storage blocks, not in standard chests, so placing your wine on a rack the moment it finishes fermenting means it starts accruing age immediately. The tooltip tracks the progress for you, so there is no reason to drink fresh wine when the same bottle will last significantly longer after a few hundred game days on the rack.

If you plan to produce wine in large quantities, the Winemaker armor set is worth crafting early. Wearing the full set, which includes the Straw Hat, Winemaker Apron, Winemaker Leggings, and Winemaker Boots, causes bone meal to consume durability from the armor instead of being spent from your inventory. Since bone meal is used up far faster than armor wears out, this lets you accelerate grape growth on your Grapevine Stems with far less overhead.

FAQ

Does Red Wine restore hunger?

No. Red Wine does not restore any hunger or saturation. It only applies the Slow Falling status effect when consumed, and you can drink it even when your hunger bar is completely full.

Do I get my Wine Bottle back after drinking?

Yes. Drinking Red Wine automatically returns one empty Wine Bottle to your inventory. If your inventory is full, the bottle drops on the ground near you instead.

Can Savanna, Taiga, or Jungle Red Grapes make Red Wine?

No. Savanna Grapes Red, Taiga Grapes Red, and Jungle Grapes Red each produce distinct juice types used in other wine recipes. Red Wine requires standard Red Grapejuice specifically, which comes only from the basic Red Grape variety grown from Red Grape Seeds.

How long does fermentation take?

Fermentation takes roughly 5 minutes in the Fermentation Barrel. You can leave the barrel running unattended and return to collect your Red Wine once it finishes.

How does the wine aging system work?

Red Wine records the in-game day it was brewed. Every 24 game days equal one wine year, and the Slow Falling duration grows by about 10 seconds per wine year, capping at 12 minutes and 30 seconds after long aging. The tooltip on the bottle shows its current age and the days remaining until the next effect level upgrade.

Does wine age in a regular Minecraft chest?

No. Wine only ages when stored in a dedicated Vinery storage block such as a Wine Rack or Wine Box. Bottles left in a standard Minecraft chest do not accumulate age, so always move your wine into Vinery storage as soon as it finishes fermenting.
