The Lava Eater is the miniboss of the Lava Eater’s Nest, which is a small Legendary Monsters structure that generates in the Nether Wastes. You’ll find it asleep in the middle of the nest, and it won’t stir until a player comes within 15 blocks. Stats wise, it has 170 health, which equates to 85 hearts, and nearly everything it does sets you on fire.
Killing a Lava Eater is the only way to get
Lava Eater’s Skin, which is needed for the
Fiery Jaw and the
Fiery Boots. As with the mod’s other minibosses, your
Arrows won’t hurt it, so it has to be fought up close, in the Nether, while on fire more often than not, which is why Fire Resistance is the whole fight really.
Location
Lava Eaters can only be found in the Lava Eater’s Nest, and there’s 1 in each nest. The nests are buried in the Netherrack of the Nether Wastes and they’re placed close together, around 25 chunks apart, so they’re one of the easier structures in the mod to run into. With cheats enabled, the command below will point you at the nearest one.
Without cheats, an
Eye Of Magma will find one for you, which is 4
Magma Blocks placed around an
Ender Pearl. The Magma Blocks are easy to find in the Nether itself, so the Pearl is the only part you’ll need to bring from home.
It has to be thrown in the Nether, and like an
Eye of Ender it will fly toward the nearest nest and might shatter on the way down. Two or three is usually enough given how close the nests are.
The nest is only about 19 blocks across, so it’s more of a pit than a building, with a couple of
Chests inside that use Bastion loot. The Lava Eater sleeps in the center of it. Because it’s small and open, there’s very little cover, and the surrounding Nether Wastes have their own Lava to worry about once the fight starts moving around.
Behavior
While it’s asleep the Lava Eater can’t be damaged or given any effects, so it can’t be weakened first. Once a player comes within 15 blocks it wakes up and comes for them, and it will attack
Iron Golems and
Snow Golems as well. It walks slowly, but its fire breath reaches out to 7 blocks, so backing off doesn’t get you out of trouble.
Attacks
The Lava Eater has 4 attacks, and 3 of them set you on fire on top of the damage. The bite is quick and short, the swipe and the slam are wider, and the fire breath is the one it uses when you try to keep your distance. The damage below is before armor, and most of them will disable a raised
Shield for 2 seconds.
| Attack | Reach | Damage | What to Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bite | 4.5 blocks | 8 | Sets you on fire for 4 seconds |
| Swipe | 6.7 blocks, wide arc | 12 | Launches you into the air |
| Slam | 7.5 blocks, wide arc | 16 | Columns of fire erupt from the ground toward you, 10 damage and 4 seconds of fire each |
| Fire Breath | 7 blocks | 11, repeating | A cone of flame it holds for a few seconds, sets you on fire the whole time |
The slam is the dangerous one, as the fire columns keep coming after the arms are down and they travel across the floor, so standing still after you dodge the slam itself will still get you burned.

The fire breath is easy to sidestep once it’s started, as it only points where the Lava Eater is facing, but it will follow you around if you stay inside the cone.
Special Mechanics
Like the mod’s other minibosses, the Lava Eater has a damage cap of 21, so a single hit will never deal more than that, and it ignores damage from anyone more than 4 blocks above or below it. It will also break the blocks around itself every couple of hits, so building a box around it or fighting from a pillar won’t last long.
Arrows are ignored completely, and so is every kind of fire and Lava, as you’d expect from something that lives in it. Fire Aspect and Flame are wasted on it, and so is a
Bow. Splash Potions of Harming do work though, and they are the only way to hurt it without standing next to it.
If you die or leave, the Lava Eater will start healing after a few seconds without a target, and it’s fast enough to go from nearly dead back to full in a matter of seconds. It never despawns either, so a nest you’ve woken and run from will have a full health Lava Eater waiting when you come back.
Drops
Every Lava Eater drops exactly 3
Lava Eater’s Skin and almost no experience. Looting doesn’t add to it, and the skin doesn’t come from anywhere else, so it works out at 3 per nest. Luckily the nests are close together, as you’ll need more than one for both recipes.
The
Fiery Jaw takes all 3 skins with 3
Blackstone, 2
Iron Ingots and a
Magma Block, and right-clicking pushes everything within 3 blocks away and has you breathing fire. The
Fiery Boots take 2 skins and 2
Magma Cream, and they spread fire around you as you walk when you press X. One Lava Eater covers the jaw, or the boots with a skin spare.
For both, you’ll need 5 skins, so that’s 2 Lava Eaters. As the nests are only 25 chunks apart, it’s usually a short trip rather than a whole expedition, and an
Eye Of Magma thrown from the first nest will normally point you straight at the second one.
Strategy
A
Potion of Fire Resistance turns this from a hard fight into a plain one, as it stops the bite, the breath and the fire columns from burning you, and it saves you from the Lava around the nest. Bring a Sword with Sharpness, since the 21 cap means anything stronger is wasted, and wear Diamond or Netherite with Protection IV for the slam.
Drink the Fire Resistance before you get within 15 blocks, so it’s active the moment the Lava Eater wakes up, then fight it at the edge of its bite range. Step to the side when its arms go up for the slam and keep moving until the fire columns have stopped. If it starts breathing fire, walk out of the cone sideways, as backing away keeps you inside it.
Without Fire Resistance it’s still doable, but you’ll be burning for most of the fight, so bring
Golden Apples to cover it and keep your armor’s Fire Protection high. Either way, don’t fight it near the edge of the nest, as the swipe will throw you into the Nether Wastes’ Lava if you’re standing next to it.
FAQ
The Lava Eater sleeps in the Lava Eater’s Nest, a small pit structure that generates in the Nether Wastes about 25 chunks apart. Craft an
Eye Of Magma from 4
Magma Blocks and an
Ender Pearl, throw it in the Nether and follow it to the nearest nest. With cheats on, /locate structure legendary_monsters:lava_eater_spawn gives you the coordinates.
You’ll get 3
Lava Eater’s Skin from every kill and nothing else, as it gives almost no experience. The skin is used for the
Fiery Jaw, which needs 3 of them with
Blackstone,
Iron Ingots and a Magma Block, and the
Fiery Boots, which need 2 with
Magma Cream, so both together take 2 Lava Eaters.
Drink Fire Resistance first, as 3 of its 4 attacks set you on fire and the nest is surrounded by Lava. Then fight it up close with a Sword, because
Arrows and fire damage do nothing to it and each hit is capped at 21. Sidestep the slam and keep moving until its fire columns stop, and walk out of the fire breath sideways.
It doesn’t, as it’s immune to being on fire, standing in fire, Lava and Magma Blocks, so Fire Aspect, Flame and
Lava Buckets are all wasted on it. It’s also immune to Arrows and fall damage. Sword hits, Splash Potions of Harming and
TNT are what’s left, and of those, a Sword is the practical one.
