Frostbitten Golem

Beat the Frostbitten Golem, the boss asleep in the Frostbitten Temple. Its hits Freeze you, its shards drop mid fight, and what the Frozen Rune crafts.

Legendary Monsters Wiki Updated 7 min read

The Frostbitten Golem is the boss of the Frostbitten Temple, a Legendary Monsters structure that generates in the snowy biomes of the Overworld. You’ll find it asleep in the middle of the temple, and it won’t wake up until a player comes within 15 blocks. Stats wise, it has 220 health, which equates to 110 hearts, and half of its hits will Freeze you as well.

Beating the Frostbitten Golem is the only way to get a Frozen Rune, which is needed for The Great Frost and the Frostbitten Shield. Both of those also need Primal Ice Shards, and those come off the Golem too, breaking off during the fight rather than dropping at the end. Arrows won’t hurt it, so it’s a melee fight in the snow.

Location

Frostbitten Golems can only be found in the Frostbitten Temple, and there’s 1 in each one. The temples generate on the surface in Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga and Ice Spikes biomes, spaced around 38 chunks apart, so a big snowfield will usually have one somewhere in it. With cheats enabled, the command below will point you at the nearest one.

/locate structure legendary_monsters:frostbitten_temple

Without cheats, you’ll want an Eye Of Frost, which is 4 Snowballs placed around an Ender Pearl, so it’s the cheapest Eye in the mod to make. Snowballs come off any snowy slope, so the Pearl is the only real cost.

Throw it and follow it like an Eye of Ender, and it will fly toward the nearest temple within 100 chunks. It might shatter on the way down, so make a couple before you head out into the snow.

The temple is a fair size, with a few Chests inside that use ordinary Dungeon loot and one with Igloo loot, so there’s nothing in them you’d cross a snowfield for. The Frostbitten Golem sleeps in the center of it. Because it wakes at 15 blocks, you’ll usually be well inside the walls before it moves, so looting the side rooms first is safe.

Behavior

While it’s asleep the Frostbitten Golem can’t be damaged or given any effects, so there’s no getting a head start on it. Once a player comes within 15 blocks it wakes up and comes for them, and it will attack Iron Golems and Snow Golems as well. It walks slowly, but it has a ranged attack that reaches 12 blocks, so backing off doesn’t put you out of trouble.

Attacks

Most of what it does is slam its arms down in front of it, and every one of those slams has a 50% chance to Freeze you for 2 seconds on top of the damage. The bigger attacks send Ice Spikes up out of the ground, and those Freeze you every time they hit. The damage below is before armor, and the slams disable a raised Shield as well.

Frostbitten Golem Attacks
Attack Reach Damage What to Know
Arm Slam6 blocks, wide arc12Its most common attack, launches you into the air, disables a Shield for 2 seconds
Short Slam4.5 blocks13Quicker and narrower, disables a Shield for 4 seconds
Spike Slam7 blocks, wide arc13, plus 5 per spikeRings of Ice Spikes erupt around you afterward, disables a Shield for 5 seconds
Ice Spike LineUp to 12 blocks5 per spikeTwo lines of spikes race across the ground toward you, each one Freezes you for 3 seconds

The Ice Spike Line is the one people get caught by, as it’s the attack it uses when you try to keep your distance, and the spikes come up a moment after it slams rather than straight away.

Step sideways out of the line rather than backing along it. The Spike Slam is the same idea up close, so once its arms have come down, move, don’t stand there swinging.

Special Mechanics

Being Frozen is the mod’s own effect rather than the vanilla one, and it’s worse. Your screen frosts over as if you were standing in Powder Snow, and you take around 2 damage a second for as long as it lasts. A slam gives you 2 seconds of it half the time and every Ice Spike gives you 3, so repeated spikes drain your health between hits.

Arrows, Potions and Fire Do Nothing

Arrows are ignored completely, and so are Splash Potions and Lingering Potions, so there’s no ranged option at all here, and it can’t be hurt by falling either. It’s fire immune as well, so Fire Aspect, Flame and Lava are all wasted on it, which leaves a plain Sword as the whole plan.

Like the mod’s other minibosses, the Frostbitten Golem has a damage cap of 21, so no single hit deals more than that, and damage from more than 4 blocks above or below it is ignored. It breaks the blocks around it every couple of hits too, so walling it off won’t last. Leave it alone for a few seconds and it heals back to full fast.

The Shards Break Off Mid Fight

You won’t find Primal Ice Shards in its death drops. Instead, one Primal Ice Shard breaks off the first time it drops below half health, and a second one below a quarter, with a loud crack each time. They land on the ground next to it, so grab them when there’s a gap, as they’re easy to lose in the snow around its feet.

So the shards are yours once you’ve got it below 25%, even if you then have to run. The Frostbitten Golem will heal back up with nobody to fight, but shards it has already dropped don’t come back, so a second attempt on the same Golem only gives you the Frozen Rune at the end.

Drops

When it dies, the Frostbitten Golem drops 1 Frozen Rune and 100 experience. Along with the 2 Primal Ice Shards from earlier in the fight, that’s everything one of them gives, and Looting doesn’t add to it. Neither item comes from anywhere else in the mod.

One fight gives you exactly enough for one of two items. The Great Frost is a sword made from the Frozen Rune, both shards and an Iron Sword, and right-clicking with it summons Ice Spikes of your own, or a ring of them around you if you sneak and click a block. The Frostbitten Shield takes the same rune and shards on a Shield instead.

So if you want both, that’s two temples. They’re spaced closer together than most of the mod’s structures, and an Eye Of Frost is only Snowballs and an Ender Pearl, so a second one is rarely far off. The Great Frost is usually the better first pick, as its spikes are the Golem’s own attack turned around, and they Freeze whatever they hit.

Strategy

Bring a Sword with Sharpness, as the cap of 21 means anything heavier is wasted and Fire Aspect does nothing to it. Diamond or Netherite with Protection IV is plenty for the slams. The thing to plan for is the Freeze, so keep your health topped up, as the drain will finish you if a spike catches you at 3 hearts.

Boss Fight Preparation

Stay on its level and just outside the 6 blocks its slams reach, then step in for a couple of hits after each one lands and back out again. When it plants its arms for the Spike Slam, or turns to face you from a distance, move sideways straight away, as the spikes follow a line. A Milk Bucket clears the Freeze if several spikes catch you.

Recommended Enchantments

Sharpness V
Gets a Sword up to the 21 cap on its own
Smite V
Swap for Sharpness if you'd rather keep one Sword for the Withered Abomination too
Protection IV
Takes the edge off the slams and the spikes
Feather Falling IV
The Arm Slam launches you into the air more than once a fight

If it’s going badly, take it below a quarter health for both shards and leave, then come back for the Frozen Rune once you’ve healed up. It’ll be back at full health by then, but the shards stay yours. Just don’t expect a second pair on the return trip, as they only break off once.

FAQ

Where do you find the Frostbitten Golem in Legendary Monsters?
›

It sleeps in the middle of the Frostbitten Temple, which generates in Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga and Ice Spikes biomes about 38 chunks apart. Craft an Eye Of Frost from 4 Snowballs and an Ender Pearl, throw it and follow it to the nearest temple. With cheats on, /locate structure legendary_monsters:frostbitten_temple gives you the coordinates.

What does the Frostbitten Golem drop?
›

You get 2 Primal Ice Shards during the fight, one when it drops below half health and one below a quarter, then 1 Frozen Rune when it dies. That’s exactly enough for either The Great Frost, with an Iron Sword, or the Frostbitten Shield, with a Shield, but not both.

How do you beat the Frostbitten Golem?
›

Fight it up close with a Sword, as Arrows and Potions do nothing to it and each hit is capped at 21. Stay on its level, hit it after a slam lands rather than during, and step sideways whenever it sends Ice Spikes along the ground. Keep your health high, because the Freeze its hits give you drains around 2 a second while it lasts.

Why is the Frostbitten Golem dropping items before it dies?
›

Those are the Primal Ice Shards, and that’s how they work, as they break off when it’s damaged rather than being part of its death loot. The first one comes off below 50% health and the second below 25%, with a crack you can hear. Pick them up when you get the chance, because they don’t come back if it heals and it won’t drop any more when it dies.
