The Ancient Guardian is a one-armed stone colossus that sleeps deep inside the Ancient Stronghold, dragging a massive anchor as its weapon. With 170 health, heavy armor, and attacks that launch, stun, and even grab you, it is one of the toughest fights you will find underground. It also heals itself the moment you back off, so this is an endurance battle you have to commit to.
The short version is simple: get up close with a fast, well-enchanted melee weapon and a shield, stay glued to it, and never run. Arrows and potions do nothing, and every hit you land is capped, so patient, sustained damage wins. Beat it and you claim the Anchor Handle, the key to crafting the powerful Monstrous Anchor.
Location
The Ancient Guardian guards the Ancient Stronghold, an underground ruin built from
Ancient Dripstone. The stronghold generates below dark, forested surface biomes, so you will need to dig down to reach it. It has no summoning item or Eye to build; you simply locate the structure and descend into it.

Search under Dark Forest, Taiga, and Old Growth Spruce Taiga biomes, along with a few modded forest biomes if you have them installed. The fastest way to pin one down is the locate command below.
The guardian rests completely dormant in its chamber and takes no damage at all until a player steps within about 15 blocks. You cannot snipe it awake or chip it down from safety, so the fight begins the instant you get close. Walk in ready to swing.
Behavior
The Ancient Guardian is slow on its feet but hits like a truck, swinging its anchor in wide arcs that punish anyone standing in front of it. It leans on four main moves, and most of them either break your shield or take away your control for a moment. Learning to read its wind-ups is the whole fight.
Attacks
Anchor Combo
Three widening swings
The guardian swings its anchor three times in a row, hitting everything in front of it for 14, then 15, then a heavy 17 damage on the final slam. That last hit covers a 160-degree arc and disables your shield for several seconds, so you cannot hold block through the whole combo.

If you are a few blocks away it lunges forward partway through the combo to close the gap. Back out of its front arc after the second swing so the wide final slam misses you.
Stun Slam
Launches and freezes you
A red warning flashes on your screen telling you the Ancient Guardian is preparing a Stun Attack. It then smashes the ground for 16 damage, throwing you into the air and applying Stun, freezing you in place and stopping your attacks for about two seconds. If you are blocking it cannot stun you, but it disables your shield instead.
This is the most dangerous move in the fight, because being stunned right next to the guardian usually means eating a full follow-up combo. The moment that warning appears, block or create distance.
Grab
Seizes unblocking players
One of its arm swings is a grab that seizes any player who is not blocking. It holds you helpless in the air for about four seconds, unable to move or fight back, before dropping you.
Blocking with a shield stops the grab completely. Keep your shield raised whenever it draws an arm back at close range.
Leap Shockwave
Full-circle ground slam
The guardian charges or leaps toward you, smashing through blocks in its path, and lands with a shockwave that sends spikes erupting from the ground. This slam hits everything around it in a full circle for 16 damage, launches you upward, and disables shields for several seconds.

Hiding behind the guardian will not save you from this attack, since it hits in every direction. Expect it whenever the guardian suddenly rushes you from range, and keep your feet moving as it lands.
When red text warns that the Ancient Guardian is preparing a Stun Attack, block or back away at once. Getting launched and frozen beside it leaves you helpless for a follow-up that can end the fight in seconds.
Special Mechanics
The Ancient Guardian carries a custom boss health bar and plays boss music once it wakes, so you always know how the fight is going. Beyond its attacks, it has several defensive tricks that shape how you should approach it.
Enrage At Half Health
When you drop the guardian to 50 percent health, or 85 HP, it lets out a roar and its armor climbs from 13 to 20. Its attacks do not change, but that extra armor means it soaks up noticeably more damage, so the second half of the fight is slower than the first. Do not panic when the roar hits; just keep your damage steady and grind it down.
First Half
Enraged
Immunities And Damage Cap
Every hit you land on the guardian is capped at 21 damage, no matter how strong your weapon is. A slow weapon that hits for far more than that wastes most of its power, while a faster weapon that lands many capped hits does far better over the fight. This is the single most important thing to know when picking your loadout.
The guardian also ignores
Arrows and other projectiles and shrugs off the damage from thrown and lingering potions. It cannot be knocked back either, and while it sleeps it takes no damage at all. Bows and splash potions are wasted here.
Attacking it carries risk of its own. Every hit you land on the guardian has a 50 percent chance of triggering a 6 damage counterattack, so keep your own health topped up as you trade blows.
Healing And Anti-Cheese
If you run away or die and leave the guardian without a target, it quickly heals itself, regaining large amounts of health every second before eventually returning to its spawn point. A drawn-out, cautious fight can undo all your progress, so you have to stay on it. It also smashes any blocks you try to pillar onto and refuses to take damage from spots it cannot reach.
Drops
The Ancient Guardian gives 100 experience and a single guaranteed drop, so there is no farming for rare rolls here. Everything you need from it comes in one
Anchor Handle.
On its own the Anchor Handle is a slow, common-tier weapon, but its real purpose is crafting. Combine it with two Iron Ingots and one Iron Block to build the Monstrous Anchor, an epic hammer that cleaves nearby enemies and can launch and stun a whole group with a charged slam.
It is one of the strongest melee weapons in this part of the mod, and you can read its full breakdown on the Monstrous Anchor page.
Strategy
Projectiles and potions are useless, and every hit is capped at 21, so this is an endurance duel decided by how well you trade blows up close. Bring a fast, well-enchanted melee weapon rather than one giant slow weapon, and wear the best armor you can, ideally Diamond or Netherite. Feather Falling helps against all the launches, and a shield is close to mandatory.
Most of the guardian’s swings only hit in front of it, so circle toward its side and back to land free hits between attacks. The exceptions are the wide final slam of its combo and the full-circle leap shockwave, which reach all around it, so never stop moving. Sidestepping is far safer than trading hits face to face.
Use your shield to block swings and to shut down the grab, but remember that both the Stun Slam and the combo’s final hit disable your shield for a few seconds. Do not lean on blocking alone, and keep an eye out for the red stun warning at all times. When your shield is knocked out, footwork is your only defense until it comes back.
Above all, stay committed. The guardian heals fast whenever it loses its target, so retreating to heal often hands it back more health than you took off. Pop a Golden Apple, hold your ground, and keep the pressure on until it falls.
FAQ
It stays dormant and invulnerable until a player comes within about 15 blocks, so you have to get close to start the fight. It is also immune to arrows and shrugs off thrown potions, so only melee attacks work.
Bring a fast, well-enchanted melee weapon like an enchanted sword. Every hit is capped at 21 damage, so slow heavy weapons waste most of their power while faster weapons land more capped hits and win the fight sooner. Bows and crossbows are useless because it ignores projectiles.
Watch for the red on-screen warning that says it is preparing a Stun Attack, then block or back out of range. Blocking stops the stun, but the slam disables your shield for a couple of seconds, so create distance whenever you can rather than relying on your shield alone.
Yes. Whenever it loses its target it quickly regains large amounts of health and eventually returns to its spawn point. Running away to heal usually gives it back more health than you removed, so stay committed to the fight.
It always drops one Anchor Handle plus 100 experience. Craft the Anchor Handle with two Iron Ingots and one Iron Block to build the Monstrous Anchor, a powerful epic hammer with a stunning charged slam.
