Every spell in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks belongs to one of nine Spell Schools: Fire, Ice, Lightning, Holy, Ender, Blood, Evocation, Nature, and Eldritch.
A spell’s school determines which equipment boosts its power, which focus item you need to craft its Scroll at the
Scroll Forge, and what damage type it deals. Focusing on a single school lets you stack specific gear bonuses and reach peak spell output, while mixing schools trades raw power for versatility.
School Attributes
Spell Power Attributes
Each school has a dedicated Spell Power attribute, such as Fire Spell Power or Blood Spell Power. When you cast a spell, its damage and effects are scaled by both your generic Spell Power and that school’s specific attribute at the same time. Both multipliers apply together, so raising school-specific power on top of generic power produces multiplicative scaling.

Wearing a school’s matching armor set is the fastest way to raise its power. Each piece grants +10% school Spell Power, +5% generic Spell Power, and +125 Max Mana. A full four-piece set totals +40% school Spell Power and +20% generic Spell Power. School-specific Upgrade Orbs add another +5% per orb through the Armor Upgrade system.
School Resistance
Each school also has a Magic Resistance attribute that applies when you take incoming spell damage of that school.
The game multiplies generic Spell Resistance by school resistance through a soft-cap formula to determine final damage. The soft cap prevents full immunity, but even modest values reduce incoming damage meaningfully.
Because each school uses a separate damage type, spreading resistance across multiple schools serves you better than over-stacking one. Applying
Protection Upgrade Orbs through the Armor Upgrade system raises your generic Spell Resistance, which multiplies with every school’s resistance simultaneously.
The Ward Rings and
Netherward Tincture address specific debuffs like fire, freeze, and poison rather than the school’s spell damage directly.
The Nine Schools
Each school is tied to a focus item used to craft its Scrolls, with one focus item consumed per Scroll. At the Scroll Forge, place the matching focus item in the focus slot, choose a spell from that school, then add
Paper and Ink.
Surround a
Blank Runestone with eight focus items at a
Crafting Table to create that school’s Rune for weapon imbuement.
Fire
Ice
Lightning
Holy
Ender
Blood
Evocation
Nature
Eldritch is the exception: its focus item is the
Echo Shard and it has no matching armor set. It works differently from every other school, as described in the next section.
Eldritch
Eldritch spells cannot be found in loot or cast until you actively learn each one. Before learning a spell, its name and stats appear as garbled obfuscated text in the Eldritch Research screen.
To learn an Eldritch spell, hold an
Eldritch Manuscript and right-click to open the Eldritch Research screen. The screen shows all seven Eldritch spells as a web of nodes. Hover over any unlearned node for roughly one second to learn it, consuming one Manuscript. The spell is then permanently unlocked and can be cast and crafted normally.
Each Eldritch spell costs one Eldritch Manuscript to learn. Learning all seven Eldritch spells requires seven Manuscripts. These are Rare-rarity items, so gather them before committing to the Eldritch school.
The seven Eldritch spells are Abyssal Shroud, Eldritch Blast, Planar Sight, Pocket Dimension, Sculk Tentacles, Sonic Boom, and Telekinesis. Each spell article in the Eldritch Spells category covers individual effects and stats.

Because Eldritch has no school armor set, boost its power through generic Spell Power gear and Eldritch Upgrade Orbs applied to any upgradeable armor. The Eldritch Spell Power attribute from other equipment provides additional school-specific gains.
Tips
Pick one school to specialize in early and wear its four-piece armor set as your primary goal. The combined +40% school Spell Power and +20% generic Spell Power from a full set outweighs mixing pieces from different schools. Each piece also adds +125 Max Mana, so a full set provides +500 Max Mana over no school armor.
Apply school Upgrade Orbs that match your armor set’s school. Each orb adds +5% to that school’s Spell Power when applied at the
Arcane Anvil. Stack them on top of your armor set bonuses for maximum school Spell Power output.
School-matched staves add another layer of school Spell Power on top of your armor bonuses. The
Ice Staff, for example, provides +15% Ice Spell Power while held. Keep the matching staff in your off-hand while a spell-imbued weapon occupies the main hand. The staff’s Spell Power bonus applies to every cast, and the imbued weapon stays available for melee combos.
Before you have a full school armor set assembled, the Wandering Magician set covers the gap. Each
leather armor piece combined with one
Arcane Essence produces a Wandering Magician piece that adds 100 Max Mana per slot. It contributes no school Spell Power but keeps your Mana pool functional while you farm your target school’s set.
Gather Eldritch Manuscripts before investing in the Eldritch school. Eldritch spells cannot be found as loot and each one costs a Manuscript to unlock, so running out mid-collection stalls your progress. Secure at least three to four Manuscripts before opening the Eldritch Research screen for the first time.
Build a small stock of each school’s focus item if you craft Scrolls regularly. Each Scroll consumes one focus item, and some focuses like the
Divine Pearl and
Frozen Bone are harder to obtain than others. Stocking up ahead of a crafting session keeps the Scroll Forge running without constant supply interruptions.
Scrolls from schools you are not specializing in can be recycled rather than discarded. Drop a Scroll into an
Alchemist Cauldron filled with water for a 50% chance to convert it into the equivalent tier of ink. Common Scrolls become
common ink, Uncommon Scrolls become
uncommon ink, and so on.
FAQ
Yes, a Spell Book holds spells from any school and you can cast any equipped spell. Your school-specific Spell Power attributes only boost spells from their matching school. Using spells from multiple schools means weaker bonuses on each unless you also stack equipment for every school involved.
Focus items are the school-specific ingredients needed to craft Scrolls at the Scroll Forge. Fire uses a
Blaze Rod, Ice uses a Frozen Bone, Lightning uses a
Bottle o’ Lightning, Holy uses a Divine Pearl, Ender uses an
Ender Pearl, Blood uses a
Blood Vial, Evocation uses an
Emerald, Nature uses a
Poisonous Potato, and Eldritch uses an Echo Shard.
Most focus items come from defeating matching mob enemies or exploring the world. Frozen Bones drop from Strays, the skeleton variant that spawns in frozen biomes. For Blood Vials, place an Alchemist Cauldron over a lit
campfire, let a mob take damage inside it, and collect four Blood Vials per fill.
Mixing school armor pieces carries no penalty; each piece contributes its bonuses independently. You lose the concentration of school-specific Spell Power from a matching four-piece set, but mixing suits gear transitions or filling Mana gaps. A matching four-piece set always provides the strongest per-school bonus.
With no school armor set, build Eldritch Spell Power through generic Spell Power gear and school-specific orbs. Apply Eldritch Upgrade Orbs at the Arcane Anvil to any upgradeable armor for +5% Eldritch Spell Power per orb. Mana and Protection Upgrade Orbs also stack on any armor, letting you assemble a flexible Eldritch loadout from whatever gear you obtain.
No, Eldritch spells never appear as Scroll drops from mobs or inside structure chests. The only way to access them is through the Eldritch Research screen using Eldritch Manuscripts.
Generic Spell Power boosts every spell regardless of school, while school Spell Power like Fire Spell Power only boosts spells from that school. Both multipliers apply simultaneously, so a Fire spell scales from both Fire Spell Power and generic Spell Power.
Items like the
Ring of Mana and general accessories target the generic attribute. School armor sets and school Upgrade Orbs target the school-specific attribute.
