Pyromancer

The Pyromancer is a neutral fire wizard in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks that lives in the Pyromancer Tower. It'll trade with you while it's calm, selling Fire Scrolls, Fire Ale and a map to the Mangrove Hut, and it swaps Chained Books for a Fire Rune. Hitting it turns it hostile, and it fights with Firebolt, Fire Breath, Blaze Storm and a single Magma Bomb, so Fire Resistance takes most of the danger away. It has 60 health and can't be set on fire, and it always drops a Fire Scroll, some Arcane Essence and a few bottles of Ink when it's killed.

Iron’s Spells and Spellbooks Wiki Updated 6 min read

The Pyromancer is a neutral fire wizard that lives in the Pyromancer Tower in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks. Leave it alone and it’ll trade with you, selling Fire Scrolls, Fire Ale and a map to the Mangrove Hut, but if you attack it you’ll be dodging Firebolts and Fire Breath until one of you goes down.

It has 60 health and it can’t be set on fire, so burning, lava and enchantments like Fire Aspect and Flame do nothing to it. It wears a Pyromancer Hat and a Pyromancer Robe, neither of which ever drop. Its punches only do 3 damage, so nearly all of the danger comes from its spells, which set you on fire and keep you burning.

Spawning

Pyromancers only spawn in Pyromancer Towers, which are tall stone towers with a cellar dungeon underneath them. They’re quite rare, as the game only tries to place one roughly every 85 chunks, and they can generate in hill, forest, plains and swamp biomes. The Pyromancer itself is usually found near the top of the tower.

Because they’re so spread out, you’ll usually come across your first Pyromancer Tower by accident while exploring. If you’d rather go straight to one, the locate command will point you to the closest tower, and the summon command puts a Pyromancer in front of you if you just want to test out its trades.

Behavior

The Pyromancer is neutral, so it patrols around the tower and watches you without attacking. Right-click it while it’s calm and it opens a trade menu, the same as a Villager. It keeps a separate anger score for every player, and each point of damage you deal adds to it. Once your score hits 2 it turns hostile, so one proper hit is enough.

That anger fades over time, dropping by one point roughly every 20 seconds, so a Pyromancer you hit by accident will go back to normal if you leave it alone. Damage dealt in Creative is ignored completely. While it’s angry it won’t trade with you, and it plays an annoyed sound if you try to open the trade menu.

Be careful not to hit the Pyromancer while you’re clearing the tower. One hit for 2 damage or more turns it hostile, and area spells, Splash Potions and sweeping attacks all count if they come from you. If it does turn on you and you’d rather trade, back off and give it a couple of minutes to calm down.

Attacks

Firebolt is the Pyromancer’s main attack, and it’s by far the Fire spell it casts the most. It’s a fast fire projectile that sets you alight, so most of your damage in the fight comes from Firebolts and the burning afterwards. It mixes in Blaze Storm, which fires a stream of fireballs, and Fire Breath, a cone of flame it holds in front of it.

Once per fight, somewhere between 4 and 10 seconds in, it also lobs a Magma Bomb. The bomb explodes into a patch of fire where it lands, so keep moving when you see it wind up. It uses Burning Dash to reposition quickly when you get too close, and it’ll drink potions to heal itself if the fight drags on, so try not to let it drag.

Burning doesn’t work on it, so Flame bows and Fire Aspect are wasted here. Fire spells will still damage it, though they’re weakened against mobs that can’t burn, so Ice and Lightning spells or a plain sword will get through its health a lot faster.

Fire Resistance is Essential

Almost everything the Pyromancer does either deals fire damage or sets you on fire, so the burning adds up quickly. A Potion of Fire Resistance or a Fireward Ring makes the fight far easier, and with either of them it’s hardly a fight at all, since its melee only does 3 damage.

Trading

A calm Pyromancer has a small, random shop that’s rolled when it first spawns. It always has at least one low quality Fire Scroll, and there’s an 80% chance each of a mid quality and a high quality Fire Scroll on top of that. The price of each Scroll depends on its rarity and level, so the better ones cost a lot more Emeralds.

Pyromancer Trades

Trades are rolled when the Pyromancer spawns. Each Ink trade has a 25% chance to appear, and it also stocks two or three random filler trades such as Candles, Lanterns, Fire Charges, Honey Bottles and Blaze Rods.

The map it sells for 24 Emeralds is called the Alchemical Trade Route, and it leads to the Mangrove Hut where the Apothecarist lives. It’ll also swap 4 Chained Books for a Fire Rune, which gets you one early without needing a Blank Runestone. That trade only works once before its shop restocks though, which happens about once a day.

Fire Ale costs 12 to 16 Emeralds a bottle. It gives you Fire Resistance and Haste III for 45 seconds, but it also makes you dizzy with Nausea for the first few seconds after you drink it. That Fire Resistance is the useful part, as a bottle is enough to get you through most fights against fire mobs.

Drops

Killing a Pyromancer always gets you one Fire Scroll rolled at a middling quality, which is often better than the cheapest Scroll in its shop. It also drops some Arcane Essence, anywhere from none up to 8 before Looting, and one to three Inks that are usually Common or Uncommon, with a small chance at Rare or Epic.

Pyromancer Drops

The Scroll is always a Fire spell. Ink chances are per roll, and it rolls one to three times. Looting increases the Arcane Essence.

The hat and robe it wears never drop, so you can’t farm the Pyromancer Armor Set from it. That means the fight is mostly worth it for the Scroll, and since the Pyromancer only spawns once per tower, you’ll usually get more out of trading with it than killing it.

Pyromancer Tower Loot

The tower is worth exploring even if you don’t touch the Pyromancer. The supply Chests are mostly full of Blaze Rods, Candles, Paper and Arcane Essence, with up to five Inks and a couple of Fire Scrolls, and there’s a 40% chance of a random ring or amulet in each one. The storage Chests give smaller amounts of the same kind of thing.

The Barrel at the top of the tower always holds a Ghast Tear and either a Ring of Affinity for a Fire spell or a high quality Fire Scroll, and the basement underneath has a trove of Fire Ale. There’s also an Armor Pile up there next to the Barrel, and breaking it spawns an Ancient Knight, so only break it if you’re ready for a fight.

FAQ

Can I trade with the Pyromancer before fighting it?
›

Yes, it’s neutral when you first find it. Right-click it to open its shop, which always has at least one Fire Scroll, a Fire Ale trade and a map to the Mangrove Hut. Just don’t hit it first, because a single hit for 2 damage or more turns it hostile and it won’t trade while it’s angry.

Where does the Pyromancer Tower spawn?
›

Pyromancer Towers generate in hill, forest, plains and swamp biomes. They’re fairly rare, with roughly 85 chunks between spawn attempts, so you might travel quite a way before seeing one. The command /locate structure irons_spellbooks:pyromancer_tower points you to the nearest tower.

Is the Pyromancer immune to fire?
›

It can’t be set alight, so Fire Aspect, Flame bows and lava all do nothing to it. Fire spells are different, as they’ll still damage it, just less than they would against other mobs. Its own attacks are almost all fire, so drinking Fire Resistance before the fight makes it a lot easier.

Is the Pyromancer related to Tyros?
›

They aren’t connected, as the Pyromancer is a regular neutral wizard from the Pyromancer Tower, while Echo of Tyros, First Flamebearer is a separate fire boss found in the Lost Citadel in the Nether. They both use Fire magic, but the Pyromancer isn’t one of Tyros’s allies and doesn’t show up in his fight.
