The
Pyrium Staff is the Fire school’s staff in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks. While it’s held in your main hand it gives +15% Fire Spell Power, +10% Cast Time Reduction and +5% Spell Power, and it’s a proper melee weapon as well, hitting for 9 damage with a faster swing than any other staff in the mod.
Getting one means a trip to the Lost Citadel in the Nether, since the Pyrium Staff needs two Pyrium Ingots and the only place they come from is the Lost Citadel’s vault. It’s a late game staff, and its 9 damage means you’re able to use it for melee as well as for casting.
Obtaining
Finding Pyrium Ingots
Pyrium Ingot only comes from the Cinderous Vault in the Lost Citadel, a big ruined structure in the Nether that generates in the same biomes as Bastions, down at around y 33. Lost Citadels are spread a long way apart, so you’ll usually have to do a fair bit of exploring, or use an
Ancient Furled Map to point you at the nearest one.

The vault is a locked Cinderous Vault that opens with a
Decrepit Key. You get a key by beating the Echo of Tyros, First Flamebearer, the Lost Citadel’s boss, and every player who took part in the fight gets their own key. Each vault gives you one Pyrium Ingot every time you open it, along with a pile of other loot.
A vault only lets each player open it once, but every Lost Citadel has four of them, so both of the ingots the staff needs can come from one Citadel over two Tyros kills. A Tincture of Forgetfulness resets a vault you’ve already opened, and those drop from the Ominous Dead King in the Catacombs.
Each Cinderous Vault only rewards each player once, and every opening needs a fresh Decrepit Key from an Echo of Tyros kill. There are four vaults in every Lost Citadel though, so a second kill and a second vault will give you the other Pyrium Ingot.
Crafting
Once you’ve got both ingots, the Pyrium Staff is made at a Crafting Table. It needs the two Pyrium Ingots, one
Arcane Cloth and one
Netherite Ingot, with the Netherite at the bottom left, the Arcane Cloth in the middle, and the Pyrium Ingots at the top and right, like a staff running diagonally across the grid.
Arcane Cloth is made from Arcane Essence and Wool, and Arcane Essence drops from almost everything magical in the mod, so that part’s easy by the time you’re raiding Lost Citadels. The Netherite Ingot is the other big cost, but the Lost Citadel’s vault can give you Netherite Scrap and Ancient Debris too, which helps a lot.
Usage
Spell Casting
Like every staff, the Pyrium Staff doesn’t give you spells itself, since that’s what your Spell Book is for. What it does is boost the spells you cast while you’re holding it in your main hand, and all three of its bonuses stack with your armor, your Spell Book and any curios you’re wearing.
The +15% Fire Spell Power only affects Fire spells, so Fireball, Firebolt, Blaze Storm, Fire Breath and the rest all hit harder with it. It adds to the Fire Spell Power from the Pyromancer Armor Set and from Fire Upgrade Orbs, whereas the +10% Cast Time Reduction and +5% Spell Power work on every school.
Melee Combat
The Pyrium Staff hits for 9 attack damage at 1.5 attacks per second, which is the highest damage of any staff, and it’s the only one that swings faster than 1.0 per second. That makes it a genuinely good melee weapon, so you’re not stuck switching to a sword whenever something gets close to you.
It doesn’t have durability, so it never breaks and you don’t need to repair it, which also means Unbreaking and Mending don’t do anything on it. It’s fireproof as well, so it won’t burn up if you die in lava in the Nether, and with an enchantability of 20 it takes enchanting quite well, so Sharpness and Fire Aspect are both worth adding.
Staff Comparison
Each staff in the mod leans towards a different school, with the Pyrium Staff for Fire,
The Blood Staff for Blood and the
Artificer’s Cane for every school at once. A staff’s bonuses only count while it’s in your main hand, so you’ll only get one staff’s worth at a time.
Pyrium Staff
The Blood Staff
Artificer’s Cane
If you’re not a fire mage, the Artificer’s Cane boosts every school and cuts your cooldowns as well, whereas the Pyrium Staff gives more to Fire spells and hits a lot harder up close. Both can take 3 Upgrade Orbs at the Arcane Anvil, which go on top of what the staff already gives.
FAQ
You’ll craft it from two Pyrium Ingots, one Arcane Cloth and one Netherite Ingot at a Crafting Table. Pyrium Ingots come from the Cinderous Vault in the Nether’s Lost Citadel, which opens with a Decrepit Key that you get from beating the Echo of Tyros, First Flamebearer.
Pyrium Ingots come from the Cinderous Vault in the Lost Citadel, and each opening gives you one. Every player can open each of the four vaults once, and a Tincture of Forgetfulness from the Ominous Dead King resets one you’ve already used.
A Blast Furnace turns each one into 5 Ancient Debris, and they’re used in the Tyros Statue, the Infernal Sorcerer Chestplate and a music disc. One is also needed at a Smithing Table to restore the Decrepit Scythe into the Hellrazor and the Decrepit Flamberge into the Legionnaire Flamberge.
The Pyrium Staff has no durability, so it never breaks and never needs repairing. It’s also fireproof, so it survives lava and fire if you drop it in the Nether, which is useful given the Lost Citadel is surrounded by lava and full of mobs that set you on fire.
