The Priest is a friendly Holy spellcaster who lives in villages in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks. He’s one of the few wizards in the mod that’s on your side, as he heals you when you’re hurt, fights off monsters that wander into the village, and runs a small shop. He has 60 health and wears the
Priest Mask and
Priest Robes.
He’s worth a lot more alive than he is as a kill, as he’ll keep healing you and trading for as long as he’s around. He does drop a Holy Scroll when he dies, but the trades he offers, like the map to the Evoker Fort and the Villager Bible, are what you’ll want him for.
Spawning
The Priest spawns inside a Priest House, a small chapel that’s added to Plains and Taiga villages. It isn’t in every village, so you’ll usually need to check a few before you find one, but they’re not especially rare either. When the Priest spawns he claims the nearest village
Bell as his home, and he walks back to it at night.

Loot the Priest House chest before you start trading. It holds a couple of Potions of Healing, a few low grade Inks, sometimes a Holy Scroll or two, and a pile of
Emeralds,
Paper,
Arcane Essence and
Divine Pearls. You’ll normally get around three Divine Pearls out of it, which is more than most early chests give.
If you’d rather test the Priest out without hunting down a village, you can summon one straight away with a command, or use the Priest Spawn Egg in Creative. A summoned Priest won’t have a home Bell, but everything else about him works the same way.
Behavior
The Priest is neutral. He’ll ignore you as you walk around the village, and he’ll happily open his shop, but he keeps track of how much damage each player has done to him. Every point of damage adds to that player’s anger, and once it reaches 2 he turns hostile, so a single solid hit is enough to set him off.
That anger drains away slowly, losing a point every 20 seconds or so, so a Priest you clipped by accident will calm down if you leave him alone for a while. Damage dealt in Creative doesn’t count at all. While he’s calm, he roams the village, opens doors and goes after any hostile mob nearby, apart from Creepers, which he leaves alone.
He also pulls attention onto himself. Every few seconds, any monster near him that doesn’t already have a target gets told to go for the Priest instead, so Zombies that would have gone for the Villagers end up chasing him. A living Priest makes a village a lot safer, especially at night when he’s back at the Bell.
Support Magic
Healing is what the Priest is really there for. When you, a Villager or another village ally drops below 80% health anywhere near him, he casts Blessing of Life or Healing Circle to heal you, and Fortify to shield you from damage. He treats players the same as Villagers, as long as you haven’t made him angry.
He has a built in cast speed bonus, so these spells come out quickly, and he’ll use the same magic on himself. That’s the main reason he’s hard to kill. If you’re fighting something tough near a village, it’s worth dragging the fight back towards the Priest and letting him keep you topped up while you deal the damage.
When Provoked
Once he’s angry, the Priest switches over to Holy damage. He fires Guiding Bolt and Wisp at you from range and tries to keep some distance, and if you get too close or he’s surrounded he casts Gust to blast everything away from him. He’ll also drink healing potions mid fight and cast Heal on himself.
The Priest heals himself with spells and potions, so early weapons struggle to out-damage him, and a long fight isn’t worth it for what he drops. While he’s angry he also won’t trade with you at all. Leave him alone unless you really need a Holy Scroll quickly and don’t mind losing the village healer.
Trades
Right-click the Priest to open his trade menu, the same way you would with a Villager. His best offer is a
Furled Map that leads to the Evoker Fort for 24 Emeralds, which saves you a lot of searching, and he’ll sell another one each time he restocks, which is about once a day. He also sells basic Potions of Healing and buys your spare
Greater Potions of Healing.
Hand him a translated Archevoker’s Logbook and he’ll give you the Villager Bible, a Holy Spell Book. The Logbook is found on a Lectern in the tower of the Evoker Fort, and the fort might hold a captive Wandering Trader who’ll translate it for 64 Emeralds, so the map he sells leads you straight to what you need.
Drops
If you do kill the Priest, he always drops one Scroll with a random Holy spell on it, rolled at a middling quality. On top of that he drops a handful of Arcane Essence, which Looting increases, and one to three Inks, which are usually Common or Uncommon but can occasionally be Rare or Epic.
His Priest Mask and Priest Robes never drop, so killing Priests isn’t a way to get the Priest Armor Set. The set has to be crafted instead, and each piece is made from a piece of Wizard armor, a Holy Rune and an Arcane Essence, with the mask and robes being the two he wears.
So there’s no real reason to kill a Priest unless you want that one Holy Scroll. You’re much better off keeping him alive, letting him heal you through your early fights, and spending the Emeralds you’d have used on healing potions on Scrolls and Inks from the Wandering Trader instead.
FAQ
No, he’s neutral and he’ll heal you when you’re hurt. He only turns on you once you’ve dealt him 2 or more points of damage, which is usually a single hit. His anger drains away on its own after a while, so if you leave him alone for a minute or two he’ll go back to trading and healing you.
Look for a Priest House in Plains and Taiga villages. It’s a small chapel with a chest inside, and the Priest lives there and treats the village Bell as his home. Not every village has one, so you might need to check a few. You can also summon one with /summon irons_spellbooks:priest in Creative.
He sells a Furled Map to the Evoker Fort for 24 Emeralds, Potions of Healing for 6 Emeralds, and buys Greater Potions of Healing from you for 18 Emeralds each. His best trade gives you the Villager Bible in exchange for a translated Archevoker’s Logbook, which you get from the Evoker Fort.
No, the Priest Mask and Priest Robes he wears never drop when he dies. His drops are a random Holy Scroll, some Arcane Essence and one to three Inks. The Priest Armor Set has to be crafted, so there’s no reason to kill Priests for it.
