The Ice school is Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks’ premier crowd control school. Its 11 spells revolve around two interlocking mechanics, Freeze and the Chilled debuff, that chain together into a powerful trapping system capable of locking down entire groups of enemies. Ice deals reliable cold damage, but its real strength lies in disabling threats before they can fight back.
Every Ice spell deals Ice Magic damage, scaling with your Ice Spell Power attribute. The
Frostbranded Book is the school’s dedicated spell book. The Cryomancer Armor set provides Ice Spell Power on each piece, making it the foundational gear for a dedicated Ice caster. Ice Runes socketed into weapons and Ice Upgrade Orbs applied at the
Arcane Anvil further increase your Ice Spell Power.
How It Works
Freeze and the Chilled Effect
Freeze is Minecraft’s built-in cold mechanic. Ice spells add Freeze Ticks to their targets, and once those ticks reach the freeze threshold, the enemy is immobilized and begins taking cold damage. Most Ice projectile spells apply Freeze Ticks on every hit, but the Chilled debuff is what makes the school truly dangerous.
Chilled reduces the target’s movement speed by 20% and doubles all incoming freeze accumulation. Two spells apply Chilled to groups:
Frostwave sends a shockwave outward in a wide radius, and
Snowball throws a massive projectile that bursts into a Chilled field on impact. Both deal no direct damage but set up the school’s most powerful follow-up.

When a Chilled enemy reaches full Freeze, they are sealed inside an Evil
Ice Tomb for 5 seconds, completely immobilized while Freeze Ticks continue stacking. Any damage you deal to the tomb is reflected back at the trapped enemy at twice the amount, so a single heavy hit can finish most frozen enemies outright. The tomb expires after 5 seconds if left alone, releasing the target.
Open with Frostwave to Chill a group, then follow with
Icicle or
Ray of Frost on individual targets. Once an enemy is sealed in an Evil Ice Tomb, hit the tomb directly to deal 2x your damage to the prisoner inside.
Ice Shadows
Two Ice spells create Ice Shadows, frozen humanoid decoys that taunt nearby enemies and then shatter. Both types behave identically: they stand in place for 5 seconds or until they take any damage. On shattering, they deal cold area-of-effect damage in a 2-block radius and launch 8 Icicle projectiles outward in all directions.
Frost Step creates a shadow of yourself at your departure point when you teleport away. Nearby enemies targeting you shift focus to the decoy, giving you time to reposition and cast.
Frostbite is a 30-second self-buff that triggers whenever you kill a fully frozen enemy. The dead enemy leaves behind their frozen form, which then shatters after 5 seconds with the same explosion and icicle burst. In a dense group fight, Frostbite can cascade Ice Shadows across the battlefield with each kill.
The Ice Spells
Ice spells fall into four roles: freeze projectiles for single-target pressure, area spells for group Chilling, defensive and impact tools, and advanced utility. The school spans Common through Epic rarity, with the most powerful effects locked behind Rare and Epic spells. Every spell below lists the values read from the mod itself.
Rarity
Cooldown
Max Level
Icicle
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 1s | 10 (+2 per level) | Instant |
Icicle is the school’s workhorse freeze spell. It flies straight to the target with no gravity on a 1-second cooldown, and each hit applies a flat 80 Freeze Ticks.
Damage per cast is low, roughly 6 at level 1 and scaling to just over 10 at max level, but the near-instant refire rate makes it the fastest way to stack freeze on a single target.
Ray of Frost
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 5 | 15s | 25 (+15 per level) | 30 blocks |
Ray of Frost fires a 30-block beam that deals higher base damage than Icicle, around 12 at level 1, and lands a heavy dose of freeze the moment it connects.
Its freeze does not work like Icicle’s flat 80. Ray of Frost adds Freeze Ticks scaling with spell power, 90 at level 1 rising to 150 at level 5, stacked on top of whatever freeze the target already carries. That makes it the fastest way to solo-freeze one enemy.
Cone of Cold
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 12s | 5 (+1 per level) | Continuous |
Cone of Cold is a continuous cast held like a flamethrower, firing a sustained cone that applies 80 Freeze Ticks per hit cycle.

Damage per tick is low at early levels but grows with spell power. It works best as a follow-up on Chilled groups, where targets lock up within seconds of sustained fire.
Frostwave
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Radius |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 8 | 45s | 50 (+5 per level) | 6-12 blocks |
Frostwave is a ground-slam AoE centred on yourself, reaching up to 12 blocks in radius at max level. It is your best option for blanket-chilling a group already surrounding you.
The 45-second cooldown is its main drawback, so plan on one Chilled window per fight.
Snowball
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Radius |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uncommon | 5 | 12s | 40 (+2 per level) | 4-7.5 blocks |
Snowball throws a giant ball that Chills everything in a 4 to 7.5 block radius where it lands. The 12-second cooldown lets you Chill targets repeatedly through a longer fight.
Use Frostwave when you are in the middle of a pack, and Snowball when you want to Chill enemies at range before they reach you.
Ice Spikes
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 15s | 30 (+10 per level) |
Ice Spikes launches a cascading line of ice crystals from the ground in front of you, with 8 to 22 spikes depending on spell level.
Trail spikes deal half damage, but the final spike is 1.5 times larger and deals full damage. If a target is in range, the chain emerges early at their location rather than running its full length.
Ice Tomb
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncommon | 8 | 30s | 30 (+15 per level) |
When an enemy is sealed in an Evil
Ice Tomb, any damage you deal to the tomb is reflected at twice the amount to the trapped enemy inside. Hit the tomb with your strongest attack for a massive burst.
Ice Tomb encases you in ice, healing roughly 1 HP per second while absorbing one incoming hit or
Counterspell before shattering. You exit voluntarily by dismounting, which makes it a reliable panic button mid-fight.
Duration scales with level and spell power, from about 5 seconds at level 1 to over 12 seconds at max level. An enemy Ice Tomb, created by the Chilled chain, traps enemies instead and deals 2x incoming damage to them.
Ice Block
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 6 | 15s | 40 (+10 per level) | 48 blocks |
Ice Block conjures a massive chunk of ice above a targeted enemy up to 48 blocks away. After a brief delay it falls, damaging any entity it passes through on the way down, and it bypasses invulnerability frames entirely so it can hit the same target several times during the fall.

On landing it explodes in a 3.5-block radius for additional frost damage. At level 1 it deals around 14 damage as its base spell power, scaling by 2 per level up to 24 at max.
Frost Step
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 8 | 12s | 15 (+5 per level) | 9+ blocks |
Frost Step is an instant teleport that sends you up to 9 blocks in the direction you are looking.
It leaves behind a frozen copy of yourself that immediately taunts nearby enemies, drawing their attacks for 5 seconds before shattering into 8 Icicle shards.
Summon Polar Bear
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 10 | 180s | 50 (+10 per level) | 10 minutes |
Summon Polar Bear calls a loyal companion that fights alongside you for 10 minutes and doubles as a mount.
The bear’s health starts at 24 HP and scales to 60 HP at max level, multiplied by your entity power, and its attack damage scales with spell level and your Ice Spell Power. The 3-minute cooldown means protecting it matters.
Frostbite
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epic | 5 | 60s | 80 (+10 per level) | 30 seconds |
Frostbite is the school’s Epic-tier capstone: a 30-second self-buff that makes every fully frozen enemy you kill explode into an Ice Shadow.
Duration does not scale with level, staying at 30 seconds, but higher levels increase the shatter damage of the resulting Ice Shadows. Paired with Cone of Cold in a dense fight, one cast can chain-shatter an entire group.
Equipment
Several items directly boost Ice Spell Power: the Cryomancer armor set, the
Frostbranded Book, the
Ice Staff, and the
Ice Rune and
Ice Upgrade Orb. Stacking these lets you build a dedicated Ice caster with significantly higher spell damage than general-purpose gear provides.
Cryomancer Armor Set
The Cryomancer set is the dedicated Ice armor. Each piece provides +10% Ice Spell Power, +125 Max Mana, and +5% general Spell Power. The full set uses the standard school armor material with 3/8/6/3 defense values (helmet/chestplate/leggings/boots).
Frostbranded Book
The Frostbranded Book provides +10% Ice Spell Power and +200 Max Mana across 12 spell slots, two more than most school books. The extra capacity suits Ice’s reliance on combining Chill setup spells with freeze follow-ups.
Ice Rune & Ice Upgrade Orb
The Ice Rune is crafted by surrounding a Blank Rune with 8 Ice Focus items. The Ice Upgrade Orb is then crafted by surrounding an
Empty Upgrade Orb with 8 Ice Runes. Apply the orb at an
Arcane Anvil to add +5% Ice Spell Power to any weapon or armor piece. Multiple orbs can be stacked on the same item up to the server’s configured upgrade limit.
Ice Staff
The Ice Staff provides +15% Ice Spell Power, +25% Mana Regeneration, and +5% general Spell Power. At 4 Attack Damage it is weak in melee, but the Mana Regen bonus helps sustain long fights where you chain multiple freeze combos.
Both the Ice Staff and the Frost Ward Ring are gated behind the
Permafrost Shard, which drops only from the captain’s quarters chest aboard the Impaled Icebreaker in icy ocean biomes. The staff pairs that shard with a Frosted Helve, itself four Frozen Bones and three Arcane Ingots. Frozen Bones drop from Strays, so farming snowy biomes early keeps the recipe unblocked.
The Frost Ward Ring adds a Mithril Scrap to a second Permafrost Shard. It zeroes your freeze counter every tick for full freeze immunity, and it also lets you walk across powdered snow.
Boreal Blade: 15 Attack Damage, -3.1 Attack Speed. A heavy Ice-aligned claymore that applies
Frostbite on hit. Strong melee option for Ice builds that want to fight up close between spell casts.
The blade is crafted from a Mithril ingot, two Ice Venom Vials, Weapon Parts and a block of Ice. Ice Venom comes from brewing an
Icy Fang, an Ice Spider drop, in the Alchemist Cauldron and bottling the result.
Tips
Never cast
Frostwave when enemies are at long range. It is centered on you, so use it when enemies are already swarming. Follow immediately with
Cone of Cold or
Icicle spam to push Chilled targets to full Freeze before the effect expires. A single Frostwave can set up ice tombs for an entire group within a few seconds if your follow-up is fast.
Ice Block ignores invulnerability frames. A frozen target cannot dodge, and Ice Block hits multiple times during the fall phase before the ground explosion. Drop it on a frozen boss or elite for one of the highest single-target damage bursts in the school.
Ice Tomb is not just a panic button. Cast it when you know a big hit is incoming, such as during a boss attack telegraphed by an animation. The tomb absorbs that one hit entirely, and the healing keeps running while you wait for the danger to pass. Enemies cannot force you out, so you can take your time dismounting.
Frost Step works best used aggressively rather than just as an escape. Teleport directly behind an enemy during a fight. The ice shadow that appears where you were draws aggro from enemies that were chasing you, and shatters into 8 icicles if hit.

FAQ
Freeze is Minecraft’s standard cold mechanic that immobilizes entities once their Freeze Ticks reach the threshold. Chilled is a separate debuff applied by
Frostwave,
Snowball, and the Snowball area-of-effect. Chilled reduces movement speed by 20% and causes the target to accumulate Freeze Ticks twice as fast. When a Chilled entity reaches full Freeze, they are automatically trapped inside an Evil
Ice Tomb for 5 seconds, which is an additional effect not triggered by regular Freeze alone.
Attack the Evil Ice Tomb directly. Any damage you deal to the tomb is redirected to the trapped enemy at twice the amount. The tomb has very low health and breaks in one hit, so the trapped entity takes 2x your attack damage immediately. A heavy sword strike,
Ice Block, or any strong spell cast at the tomb walls will finish most standard enemies instantly.
Ice spells are learned from the
Frostbranded Book, the Ice school’s dedicated spell book. You can find Frostbranded Books in chest loot across various structures, receive them as drops from the Cryomancer mob, or purchase them from wandering traders and spellcaster NPCs. The
Inscription Table also allows you to copy known spells into blank spell books for use in additional slots. Common Ice spells like
Icicle appear frequently, while Rare and Epic spells like
Frost Step and
Frostbite require rarer book variants.
An Ice Shadow is a frozen humanoid decoy that appears in two situations. Frost Step creates an ice copy of yourself at your departure point when you teleport, and it taunts nearby enemies for 5 seconds. Frostbite creates an ice copy of any fully frozen enemy you kill under the buff’s effect. Both types stand still for 5 seconds or until hit, then shatter into 8 Icicle projectiles that fire outward and deal an area burst of cold damage in a 2-block radius.
Yes, the self-cast Ice Tomb heals you for approximately 1 HP per second while riding inside it, scaling with your entity power multiplier. The tomb lasts from about 5 seconds at level 1 to over 12 seconds at max level. It breaks on any single hit or a
Counterspell, functioning as one-hit absorption plus timed healing rather than true invulnerability.
Icicle is the best starting Ice spell: Common rarity, 1-second cooldown, low mana cost, and Freeze Ticks on every shot. You can fire it rapidly while moving to keep pressure on a single target. Adding Frostwave next gives you the Chilled setup that brings Ice’s crowd control chain online.
Cryomancer armor and Ice Runes are the core stat boosters for the school. The
Ice Staff, crafted from the
Permafrost Shard found in the Impaled Icebreaker ship in icy ocean biomes, adds +15% Ice Spell Power while held. The Frost Ward Ring, also made from the Permafrost Shard, grants freeze immunity and is strongly recommended before fighting the Cryomancer or entering ice spider dens. For a melee complement, the
Boreal Blade, crafted from Ice Venom obtained via Ice Spider Fangs, comes pre-imbued with Frostbite and pairs naturally with the school’s freeze-and-shatter playstyle.
