Fire is one of the most aggressive and versatile spell schools in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks, built around overwhelming enemies with direct damage, persistent flames, and area denial. With 13 spells spanning Common to Legendary rarity, the school offers fast-firing projectiles, channeled streams, and close-range strikes all under one element.
Fire builds come online quickly and scale sharply with the Fire Spell Power attribute, making the school a strong choice from early game through endgame. The school’s greatest strength is sustained pressure. Most fire spells ignite targets after the initial hit, adding burn damage that stacks with follow-up casts.
At higher levels, combining armor-shredding spells with raw fire damage can delete enemies before they react. The main drawback is fire immunity, which shuts down most of the school against Nether mobs, making Fire builds less reliable in Nether-heavy playthroughs without supplementary gear.
How It Works
All fire spells draw from a hidden attribute called Fire Spell Power, which acts as a multiplier on damage output. The Pyromancer Armor Set provides Fire Spell Power on each piece, making it the foundational gear for a dedicated fire caster.

The
Blaze Instruction Manual grants an additional 10% Fire Spell Power on top of a 200-point Mana bonus when held, and the
Fire Upgrade Orb lets you add Fire Spell Power boosts to compatible equipment through the
Arcane Anvil.
Fire spells come from the same sources as other schools: spell books found in Chests, trading with the Pyromancer NPC, and the
Inscription Table for leveling spells you already own.
Raise Hell is the exception, as it cannot be crafted and only appears in loot.
The Pyromancer Tower is the most reliable early source of fire spell books, and the Pyromancer merchant there also sells fire-related goods, including
Fire Ale, a consumable that grants Haste and Fire Resistance for a short duration. See the Pyromancer Tower article for full details on that structure.
Ignition
Nearly every fire spell applies ignition to whatever it hits, setting targets on fire for 2 to 8 seconds depending on the spell. Ignition damage ticks separately from the spell’s direct hit, bypasses armor, and persists even after the initial cast ends.
When you chain multiple fire spells together, enemies are almost always burning, and even lightweight spells like
Firebolt contribute more damage than their base values suggest. Fire-immune mobs, including most Nether inhabitants such as Blazes and Wither Skeletons, take no damage from fire ticks and reduced or no damage from fire-typed spells.
If you plan to spend significant time in the Nether, consider supplementing your fire loadout with spells from another school. The
Fireward Ring grants fire immunity, preventing friendly fire incidents when an ally is casting fire spells, and can be crafted from a
Mithril Scrap and four
Cinder Essence.
Rend and Heat Surge
Heat Surge is the only fire spell that does not deal direct damage. It erupts an aura in a 6 to 9 block radius, igniting every enemy in range and applying the Rend debuff. Rend reduces a target’s effective armor, scaling from 15% reduction at spell level 1 to 40% at maximum spell level 6.
Rend stacks multiplicatively with high-damage follow-up spells. Opening a fight with Heat Surge then casting
Fireball or Raise Hell means those spells hit a target with significantly less armor. The debuff lasts around 12 seconds at lower levels and over 20 seconds at higher levels.
The Fire Spells
The 13 fire spells fall into four rough groups: ranged projectiles, channeled streams, area and zone spells, and close-range options. Most players run one fast projectile for reliable damage, one sustained or area spell for crowd control, and a mobility spell to stay alive.
Raise Hell sits outside those categories as a Legendary option that rewards holding a strong melee weapon.
Rarity
Cooldown
Max Level
Firebolt
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast | AoE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 1s | 10 (+2 per level) | Instant | None |
Firebolt is the school’s bread-and-butter spell, firing instantly with only a 1-second cooldown. Damage is modest at around half your Fire Spell Power per shot, but the near-zero cooldown makes it a reliable filler between heavier spells, and every bolt sets its target on fire for 3 seconds.

Players who prefer a melee-caster hybrid often imbue Firebolt onto a weapon at the
Arcane Anvil, adding it as an extra cast option when that weapon is drawn without occupying a spell book slot.
Fire Arrow
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast | AoE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 10 | 8s | 40 (+5 per level) | 1s charge | 3 blocks |
Fire Arrow is the first of the two charged alternatives for players who want bigger single hits. It requires a 1-second charge, flies straight before gravity takes over, and deals direct damage plus a 3-block explosion on impact.
Fireball
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast | AoE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 5 | 25s | 60 (+15 per level) | 2s charge | Scales with level |
Fireball demands a 2-second charge and pays it back with massive area damage. The 25-second cooldown limits it to fight openers and punishing stationary targets, and at level 5 it is the shortest-scaling fire spell in the school.
Fire Breath
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 12s | 5 (+1 per level) | Channelled |
Fire Breath projects a continuous cone of flames while you hold the cast key, igniting anything inside for 4 seconds and dealing consistent damage throughout.

It shines in tight corridors but loses effectiveness against fast-moving targets, ending automatically if they move beyond about 10 blocks. At 5 mana it is one of the cheapest spells in the school to sustain.
Blaze Storm
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 20s | 5 (+1 per level) | Channelled |
Blaze Storm shoots a rapid volley of small fireballs rather than a continuous beam. Individual damage per fireball is lower than Firebolt, but it sets invulnerability frames to zero, letting several fireballs hit the same enemy in quick succession.
The barrage grows longer at higher spell levels, and like Fire Breath it costs very little mana per cast.
Scorch
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uncommon | 10 | 12s | 50 (+5 per level) | 1s charge | 32 blocks |
Scorch targets a ground location up to 32 blocks away with a 1-second charge, erupting for full damage in a 2.5-block radius. It then leaves a fire field that deals 10% of that damage per tick for 10 seconds.
Use it to force enemies into losing positions or to punish mobs that cluster together.
Magma Bomb
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uncommon | 8 | 12s | 30 (+5 per level) | 1s charge |
Magma Bomb launches an arcing projectile that explodes on landing, dealing direct impact damage and leaving a fire field at the impact point much like Scorch. The arc makes it better suited to lobbing over cover than to precise placement.

Wall of Fire
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 5 | 30s | 30 (+5 per level) | Instant |
Wall of Fire places anchor points where you are looking, with up to three casts shaping the wall’s path. The wall forms automatically when you use all three casts or when the total length exceeds 10 blocks plus 3 blocks per spell level.
For stationary targets or tight groups, placing all three anchor points on the target forms the wall on contact for instant ignition.
Heat Surge
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 6 | 45s | 50 (+10 per level) | 1s charge |
Heat Surge is the school’s armor-reduction tool, covered in detail in the How It Works section above. Its 45-second cooldown is the longest of any Common fire spell, so treat it as a setup cast before a burst rather than a rotation filler.
Flaming Strike
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 5 | 15s | 30 (+15 per level) | 0.5s |
Flaming Strike delivers a sweeping melee arc about 3 blocks wide and nearly 2 blocks ahead, striking everything in range for fire damage. The damage adds your held weapon’s attack value directly, with any Fire Aspect enchantment adding on top of that.
It hits considerably harder with a well-enchanted weapon than a bare-handed cast, and cannot be interrupted once the animation begins.

Burning Dash
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 10 | 10s | 20 (+2 per level) | Instant |
Burning Dash launches you forward, dealing fire damage to anything you pass through and granting a full second of invulnerability during the movement. That makes it a reliable escape from melee range as well as a gap-closer.
Flaming Barrage
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rare | 5 | 15s | 80 (+5 per level) | Instant |
Flaming Barrage fires five small homing fireballs through recasts, each tracking your cursor or the entity you are aiming at. At 80 mana it is the most expensive non-Legendary spell in the school, so save it for targets worth all five recasts.
Raise Hell
| Rarity | Max Level | Cooldown | Mana Cost | Cast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary | 5 | 25s | 90 (+45 per level) | 0.8s |
Raise Hell is the school’s Legendary spell and cannot be crafted at the
Inscription Table. It slams the ground to create an 8-block radius fire eruption, dealing damage equal to your Fire Spell Power plus your held weapon’s attack damage.
The number of recasts equals your spell level, so at maximum level 5 you get five eruptions from a single cooldown. Each recast triggers another eruption in roughly the same area, devastating against large targets or groups caught at close range.

Because it scales with weapon damage, Raise Hell rewards holding a strong melee weapon even as a caster. It will not fire if you are airborne or over a gap, as it needs solid ground, and it comes from loot rather than crafting, so treat it as a late-game power spike.
The Blaze Instruction Manual
The
Blaze Instruction Manual is not a traditional spell book, it does not store spells or have spell slots. Instead, it functions purely as a stat-boosting focus item held in your offhand while casting.
It grants +10% Fire Spell Power and 200 additional maximum Mana while equipped, making it one of the strongest single-item damage boosts for a dedicated fire caster. Despite its name, it is registered as a spell book with 10 slots, so it can hold spells if needed, but most players use it solely for the passive bonuses.
Value
You can find the Blaze Instruction Manual in Pyromancer Tower Chests or purchase it from the Pyromancer merchant inside the tower. It appears frequently enough that most fire builds acquire one before mid-game. Pair it with the full Pyromancer Armor Set for a combined Fire Spell Power bonus that significantly outpaces any generic spell book setup.
Tips
Stack Fire Spell Power before anything else. The Pyromancer Armor Set provides school-appropriate bonuses across all four pieces, and holding the
Blaze Instruction Manual in your offhand adds another 10% damage multiplier plus 200 Mana.
Fire Upgrade Orbs at the
Arcane Anvil extend this further, and swapping to a fire-themed staff adds cooldown reduction and additional fire damage once your core Pyromancer pieces are in place.
Open serious fights with
Heat Surge before casting your hardest-hitting spells. A target with 40% less effective armor takes meaningfully more damage from
Fireball,
Raise Hell, or a
Flaming Strike chain. Heat Surge has a 45-second cooldown, so plan to use it early in each major encounter rather than saving it reactively.
Wall of Fire is one of the most underused tactical spells in the school. Set it up at a doorway or chokepoint before engaging, forcing enemies through a damage field and blocking incoming projectiles. Against stationary targets in open spaces, place all three anchor points directly on the target to form the wall on contact for instant ignition.

Keep
Burning Dash on a dedicated hotkey as your emergency escape. The invulnerability window during the dash is long enough to survive hits that would otherwise land, and the movement distance is enough to break melee range reliably. At higher levels, you can also use it offensively to pass through enemy groups and ignite them all in one motion.
Flaming Strike and Raise Hell both gain damage from your melee weapon. If you use either regularly, equip a weapon with high base damage and Fire Aspect rather than treating yourself as a pure caster.
Flaming Strike adds Fire Aspect’s enchantment level directly to the damage calculation, so Fire Aspect III is worth significantly more than Fire Aspect I. Consider imbuing
Firebolt onto that same weapon at the Arcane
anvil, giving you a fifth spell option whenever the weapon is drawn.
Fireball’s 25-second cooldown is the biggest pacing constraint for burst-focused fire builds. Stacking cooldown reduction upgrade orbs on armor pieces and your spell book brings that window down significantly, and holding a staff that provides additional cooldown reduction compounds the effect further. Builds that lean on Fireball as their main damage source often treat cooldown reduction as a higher priority than Fire Spell Power beyond the baseline Pyromancer gear.
Most Nether mobs are immune to fire damage, meaning Firebolt,
Fire Arrow,
Fire Breath,
Blaze Storm, and similar direct-damage spells may deal no damage.
Scorch‘s initial hit and Flaming Strike’s physical component may still connect, but carry spells from another school when exploring the Nether. Heat Surge’s Rend debuff still applies to fire-immune mobs even though the ignition does nothing.
FAQ
Fire spells appear in spell books found throughout the world, with higher-rarity spells found in harder structures. The Pyromancer Tower is the most reliable early source, containing both chests with fire spell books and a Pyromancer NPC you can trade with. You can also upgrade existing spells using the
Inscription Table once you have a base copy.
Raise Hell only appears as loot since the Inscription Table cannot create it from scratch. Look in high-tier structures and boss loot. Because it is Legendary rarity, treat finding it as a significant upgrade rather than something you can reliably farm for.
The
Blaze Instruction Manual is a special spell book that grants a 10% Fire Spell Power bonus and 200 additional maximum Mana while held. It does not store spells like a regular spell book. Hold it in your offhand while casting fire spells to benefit from both bonuses simultaneously.
Heat Surge does not deal direct damage. It ignites enemies in its radius and applies the Rend debuff, which reduces their effective armor. Use it as an opener before other high-damage fire spells rather than as a damage source on its own.
The first cast places an anchor at the location you are looking at, up to 20 blocks away. Recasting places additional anchors, and the wall forms between them. The wall creates automatically when you use all three casts or when the total wall length reaches the spell’s maximum, which starts at 10 blocks and grows by 3 blocks per spell level. The wall blocks incoming projectiles and ignites any mob that walks through it.
Fire-immune mobs resist fire-typed spell damage, which affects most fire school spells.
Flaming Strike‘s damage calculation adds your weapon’s physical attack damage, so it may still land partial damage. Heat Surge’s Rend debuff applies regardless of fire immunity. For full effectiveness against Nether mobs, carry at least one spell from another school.
