The Cryomancer is a neutral ice wizard in Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks who lives at the top of a Mountain Tower in the cold and mountain biomes. He’s a trader first, selling Ice spell Scrolls and a map to one of two frozen structures, and he’ll swap two
Icy Fang for an
Ice Rune, which is the easiest way to get one.
He won’t attack you on sight, so you can walk up and trade with him in peace. Hit him though, and you’re fighting a frost caster with 60 health and 11 armor from his
Cryomancer Hood and
Cryomancer Coat, who teleports around and drops blocks of ice on your head, so it’s much better to treat him as a shop.
Spawning
Each Cryomancer comes from a Mountain Tower, a tall stone tower with one Cryomancer living in it, and he never spawns out in the open. Mountain Towers generate in Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Grove and Ice Spikes, and in any of the mountain biomes like Meadow, Cherry Grove, Frozen Peaks and Jagged Peaks.

The towers are fairly spread out, since the game only tries to place one about every 45 chunks, so you’ll likely have to travel a bit. The locate command will point you at the nearest one. Once you get there, the Cryomancer stays near his tower, within about 30 blocks, and he won’t come after you if you walk away.
Trading
Right-click the Cryomancer while he’s calm and his shop opens, just like a Villager’s. His stock is rolled when he spawns, so every tower is a bit different, but he always has at least one low-level Ice Scroll, and usually two more on top of that. The last of those is often close to the spell’s top level.
He also always sells one
Furled Map for 32
Emeralds, which leads to either the Impaled Icebreaker or the Ice Spider Den, picked at random. His other two fixed trades take four
Fire Ale for the Whispers of Ice music disc, and two
Icy Fang for an
Ice Rune, and each of those works once until his shop restocks about once a day.
The Ink trades are the random part. Each Cryomancer has a 25% chance to buy each of Common, Uncommon and Rare Ink, and he’ll pay either in Emeralds or in half as much
Arcane Essence. His stock restocks roughly once a day, the next time you open his shop, and that brings the map, disc and Rune trades back as well.
You’ll want more than one Ice Rune, since eight of them around an
Empty Upgrade Orb makes an
Ice Upgrade Orb, and they’re also used in the Cryomancer armor set. Icy Fang comes from Ice Spiders, so if his map sends you to the Ice Spider Den, that’s also where you’ll farm the Fangs for his Rune trade.
Behavior
The Cryomancer is neutral and ignores you until you hit him. Every hit adds anger equal to the damage you dealt, and at 2 he turns hostile, so one proper weapon swing does it. A tiny tap below that only gets you some angry particles and a warning. His anger drops by one level every 20 seconds, and he won’t trade while he’s angry.
Buy everything you want before you even think about fighting him. His anger fades on its own if you leave him alone, but it can take a few minutes after a big hit, and the loot from killing him is nowhere near as good as what he sells. Keep other mobs away from the tower too, since a stray hit on him from you still counts.
Combat Spells
Once he’s fighting, the Cryomancer mostly throws Icicles, with the odd Cone of Cold when you’re close. Every five to twelve seconds he also drops an Ice Block on you from above, which hits hard if you’re standing still. Once per fight he summons a Polar Bear to fight for him, and he’ll drink potions to heal himself 10 health at a time.
He’s slippery on defense too. Counterspell cancels whatever spell you’re casting and strips the mod’s magic buffs off you, and Frost Step teleports him away, leaving an ice shadow behind that pulls nearby mobs onto it for five seconds before it shatters and does damage. Chasing him around the tower is how fights with the Cryomancer drag on.
If you do fight him, bring a
Shield. It blocks his Icicles and gives you time to close the gap while he’s trying to Frost Step away, and killing the Polar Bear first stops you being hit from two sides. Keep moving, since the Ice Block only drops where you were standing when he cast it.
Toughness and Weaknesses
The Cryomancer has 60 health and 11 armor, which soaks up a few good hits but isn’t hard to get through with a decent weapon. He’s also immune to freezing, so Powder Snow does nothing to him. The real problem in a long fight is his healing and Frost Step, so hit him hard and try to finish him before he teleports off.
If a fight goes badly, you can just back off. He stays near his tower rather than chasing you across the mountain, and once his anger drops below 2 he stops attacking. That gives you a chance to heal up and either come back for another go, or leave him alone and come back to trade with him later.
Drops
Killing a Cryomancer gets you 25 experience, one random Ice Scroll, up to eight
Arcane Essence and one to three Inks. He never drops his Cryomancer Hood or Coat, so you can’t farm the armor off him, and you’ll have to craft the Cryomancer armor set instead.
The Ice Scroll gives you a free Ice spell at a random level. Arcane Essence goes into a lot of the mod’s recipes, including its armor sets, and the Inks are what you spend making your own Scrolls at the Scroll Forge. Looting only adds to the Arcane Essence, so it doesn’t help with Inks.
FAQ
He only spawns in a Mountain Tower, which generates in snowy and mountain biomes like Snowy Plains, Grove, Ice Spikes and Frozen Peaks. Use /locate structure irons_spellbooks:mountain_tower to find the nearest one. He never spawns anywhere else.
He always sells a low-level Ice Scroll, usually two stronger ones, and a map to the Impaled Icebreaker or Ice Spider Den for 32 Emeralds. He also trades four Fire Ale for a music disc and two Icy Fang for an Ice Rune. Some Cryomancers buy Inks too.
The easiest way is trading two Icy Fang to a Cryomancer, which he’ll do once each time his shop restocks. Icy Fang drops from Ice Spiders, which you’ll find in the Ice Spider Den his map can lead you to. You can also craft Ice Runes if you’ve got the materials.
No, he’s neutral and won’t attack unless you hit him. One real hit makes him hostile, and his anger fades by one level every 20 seconds after that. Once he’s calm again, you can go back and trade with him as normal.
