Skrill

Find the Skrill in frozen mountain Cliff Roosts, survive its lightning beam and shield, tame it by dropping food, and ride a lightning dragon of your own.

Book Of Dragons Wiki Updated 6 min read

The Skrill is one of the most dangerous dragons in Book of Dragons, a Strike class flier wreathed in lightning. You meet it only high in cold mountain peaks, and a wild one is aggressive and hunts you down once it spots you. The in-game Book of Dragons is blunt about it: a highly secretive creature known to ride lightning bolts, extremely dangerous, kill on sight.

What sets the Skrill apart is that it trades toughness for raw power. Its Constitution is low, so it drops faster than most dragons, but its lightning breath and blistering speed make it a true glass cannon. Tame one and you gain a fast aerial mount that can slam down a Lightning Shield mid fight.

Spawning

You will not stumble across a Skrill in the open world. It spawns only at Cliff Roosts, a structure that generates on cold mountain peaks. The in-game Book of Dragons also notes that Skrills have been sighted riding lightning bolts during thunderstorms, but Cliff Roosts are the reliable place to hunt one.

A Skrill spawning on a Cliff Roost

At a Cliff Roost the game picks between a Skrill and a Night Fury, and the Skrill wins that roll most of the time at roughly 70 percent versus 30 percent. The quickest way to reach one is a Cliff Roost Map, which points you straight to the nearest roost. You can also hunt for the structure directly with a locate command.

Every Skrill rolls one of four color variants when it spawns, and they are purely cosmetic. The standard grey Skrill is the most common, followed by the shimmering Prismarine and the fiery Redflash. The pale Albino is the rarest, showing up only about one time in twenty.

Behavior

A wild Skrill is aggressive and hunts you down once it notices you. On the ground it spots players from about 16 blocks away, but in the air that range balloons to around 160 blocks.

It sizes you up before it commits, though, and you can use that. Carrying a weapon or wearing armor makes it turn hostile far faster, while crouching keeps you off its radar completely. Sneak toward one with an empty hand and its aggression may never climb high enough to attack.

The Skrills Lightning Attack

Its signature weapon is a continuous beam of lightning. Each hit deals about 6 damage, and the beam strikes several times a second, so standing in it drains your health frighteningly fast. Up close the Skrill also bites for roughly 12 to 17 damage.

Lightning Shield

When a wild Skrill drops below about a third of its health and has two or more enemies nearby, it discharges a Lightning Shield. Five bolts crash down around it and everything within 8 blocks takes 8 damage instantly.

For the next ten seconds it shrugs off most incoming damage and shocks anything that hits it for 4 damage, so back off and wait the shield out rather than trading blows.

Taming

A tamed Skrill is one of the best mounts in Book of Dragons, fast and hard hitting, but its trust has to be earned. You cannot hand feed a wild one, since it will just bite you and refuse the food. Instead you drop food on the ground and let the Skrill come to eat it.

1

Approach Crouched

Keep its aggression down

Sneak toward the Skrill with no weapon in hand and as little armor as you can manage. Crouching hides you from its detection, and going in unarmed stops its aggression from climbing toward an attack.

2

Drop Food to Bond

Toss food on the ground

Drop its food near it and the Skrill walks over to eat, earning you affection each time. Food dropped on the ground is worth triple the normal amount, so Tropical Fish is the fastest option at 150 affection per drop. Keep dropping food until affection reaches 200, with Mutton as a steady backup at 45 per drop or Cod in a pinch at 12 to 18.

3

Complete the Ritual

Crouch with an empty hand

Once affection hits 200 the Skrill sits down and a short taming ritual begins. Sneak and interact with it using an empty hand within about twenty seconds to finish the bond. If you miss that window the ritual fails and you lose some of your progress, so be ready before you cross the threshold.

4

Keep Bonding

Raise the bond level

Taming is only the beginning: feeding your Skrill and flying together raises its bond from Tolerant up through Curious, Friendly, and finally Bonded. Each level lifts the cap on its stats, so a Skrill you fly often becomes noticeably tougher and stronger than a freshly tamed one.

Once your Skrill is tamed, place a Saddle on it to ride. In the air you can fire its lightning beam yourself, and once your bond reaches Friendly you can trigger the Lightning Shield on command, turning its best defensive move into a tool you fully control.

Eggs and Hatching

You can also raise a Skrill from an egg instead of taming a wild adult. The Skrill Egg has one very specific hatching requirement: it must be set on fire.

Place the egg in the world, then set fire on top of it to activate it. Once lit it begins incubating and hatches into a baby Skrill after a while. Breeding two tamed Skrills is the usual way to get an egg in the first place, and the full process is covered on the Breeding and Hatching page.

A hatched Skrill starts small and grows into a full adult over time. Feeding it its favorite Mutton speeds that growth along noticeably, so keep a stack handy while it matures.

FAQ

Where do Skrills spawn?
›

Skrills only spawn at Cliff Roosts, which generate in cold peak biomes like Snowy Slopes, Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, and Stony Peaks. They do not appear anywhere else in the open world. Use a Cliff Roost Map to find one quickly.

How do I tame a Skrill?
›

You cannot hand feed a wild Skrill, so drop food on the ground for it to eat instead. Dropped food gives triple affection, and Tropical Fish is the fastest at 150 per drop. Once affection reaches 200 the Skrill sits, and you crouch and interact with an empty hand to finish taming.

What is the Skrill’s weakness?
›

The Skrill trades toughness for power, so it has low health for a dragon and drops fast under a strong bow or crossbow. Constitution is its weakest stat, so hit it hard from range before its lightning beam wears you down.

How do I hatch a Skrill Egg?
›

Place the Skrill Egg down and set fire on it to activate it. Once lit, it incubates and hatches into a baby Skrill after a while. Right-clicking the egg shows its activation and incubation progress.

What are Skrill Scales used for?
›

A Skrill drops 3 to 6 Skrill Scales, and Looting can add more. Scales from any dragon can be combined, eight at a time, with a Slime Ball to craft Fireproof Scalemail, a fireproof material used in higher tier crafting recipes.

Can I ride a Skrill and use its abilities?
›

Yes. After taming, place a Saddle on your Skrill to ride it through the air. While mounted you can fire its lightning beam, and once your bond reaches Friendly you can trigger the Lightning Shield yourself. Flying together raises its bond level to strengthen its stats over time.
