The Night Fury is the rarest and most dangerous dragon in Book of Dragons, found roosting on cold, remote mountain peaks. Taming one rewards you with the fastest flying mount and the strongest breath weapon the mod has to offer. Its own guidebook calls it “the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself” and warns you to never engage a wild one.
Think of the Night Fury as a glass cannon, with the lowest health in the mod and the highest firepower and top speed. That trade-off shapes everything about approaching, fighting, and eventually flying one.
Spawning
Night Furies live at Cliff Roosts, structures that generate on frozen and rocky mountain peaks. Each Cliff Roost houses a single adult dragon, with a 30% chance it is a Night Fury and a 70% chance it is a 
Skrill instead. You may need to check several roosts before you find one, so treat every peak as a possible nest.
The fastest way to track a roost down is a 
Cliff Roost Map, which points you straight to the nearest one. Dragons here always spawn fully grown, so the Night Fury you meet is a combat-ready adult from the moment you arrive.
The roost chest is worth raiding even before you tame anything. It always holds 4 to 8 
Night Fury Scales and a pile of cod, and it has a 1 in 5 chance to contain a 
Night Fury Egg. That egg is a second route to owning one, since it hatches into a baby when placed in near-total darkness at a light level of 1 or lower.
Behavior
A wild Night Fury is not automatically hostile, but it grows wary of any player it can see within about 16 blocks. That wariness climbs faster the more threatening you look. Simply standing there builds it slowly, wearing armor adds to it, and holding a weapon such as a 
Sword, 
Axe, 
Bow, or 
Crossbow makes it spike dramatically.
As wariness climbs, the dragon postures and warns you off before attacking. Staying armed pushes it past its limit, causing it to attack outright on any difficulty above Peaceful, or flee on Peaceful. Crouching stops wariness from building, and 200 affection permanently removes the threat response.
After nightfall a wild Night Fury that has claimed a roost returns to it to sit and then sleep. While it is resting it stops tracking nearby players, so it will not build any wariness toward you until it wakes.
Attacks
The Night Fury’s signature move is its fury bolt, a charged purple-blue blast that it winds up for about two seconds before firing. It deals 12 damage on a direct hit and detonates with knockback that can throw you off a cliff edge. The explosion does not break blocks or set fires.
Up close it falls back on a melee bite for smaller damage. Combined with its speed, the fury bolt lets it pepper you with explosive shots from range before you can close in.
Special Mechanics
The Night Fury is completely immune to fire and lava damage, so trying to trap one in flames does nothing. It is also an exceptional flyer, faster and more nimble than anything else you could chase it with.
Below 25% health, a wild Night Fury calls down real lightning to damage everything within a couple of blocks. It then turns invisible for around five seconds and breaks away to reset the fight rather than finish it.
Right-clicking a wild dragon with food does not tame it. The dragon bites you for a little damage and refuses the food. To feed a wild Night Fury you must drop the food on the ground and let it come to the meal on its own.
Taming
Taming a Night Fury is a patient, unarmed ritual rather than a fight. You raise its affection by feeding it fish until it trusts you, then seal the bond with a short ceremony. Rushing in with a weapon out is the surest way to get attacked instead.
Approach Unarmed and Crouched
Put weapons away and sneak
Empty your main hand of weapons and crouch before you get close. Crouching stops the dragon from building wariness toward you, giving you time to work. Light armor is fine, but a drawn Sword or Bow will provoke it quickly.

Tropical Fish on the ground near the dragon rather than trying to hand-feed it. Dropped food grants three times the normal affection, so a handful of salmon or a couple of tropical fish go a long way. Heart particles confirm your affection is climbing.

The taming ritual begins
Once your affection hits 200, the dragon sits down and a short ritual window opens. From this moment it treats you as its owner, stops seeing you as a threat, and starts a roughly 20-second timer. Finish the next step before that timer runs out.
Complete the Ritual
Crouch and interact with an empty hand
While the dragon is sitting, crouch and interact with it using a completely empty hand to form the bond. Miss the window and the ritual fails, costing you 100 affection and forcing another attempt. Get it right and the Night Fury is yours.
The three fish tiers grant very different amounts of affection, deciding how quickly you reach 200. Tropical fish gives the most affection per fish, while salmon is the true favorite and also speeds up a hatched baby’s growth.

Once tamed, you still cannot ride it bare-backed. Give the dragon a 
Saddle by holding one and interacting with it, and add a

Feeding does not stop at taming. Keep bonding through the phases in Bonding & Affection, since Lightning Strike only unlocks at Friendly bond level and stats keep climbing until Bonded. A 
Rattle-Staff lets you order the dragon to follow, move, sit, or attack a target. A 
Dragon Whistle summons it back from a distance.
Drops
A slain Night Fury drops 4 to 7 Night Fury Scales, and 
Looting can add up to one more. Killing one is the only way to get its scales directly, though the roost chest offers a peaceful alternative if you would rather keep the dragon alive.
