Aquamirae Mod Wiki Updated 5 min read

The Tortured Soul is the frozen crew of the Pirate Shelter, a hostile melee mob with 30 health and a 7-damage swing that only exists inside that one structure, where 10 of them are placed in the main chamber when it generates. They never spawn anywhere else, they never come back once they’re dead, and they’re the reason the shelter is the hardest room in the mod.

What makes them dangerous isn’t the 7 damage. It’s that Aquamirae’s combat rules turn most of their hits into critical hits against a player without Depth’s Resilience, and cut your armor to a fifth of its value, so a swing that reads as three and a half hearts lands as ten. This page covers where they are, how they fight, what they ignore, and how to hold a shaft against them.

Spawning

Tortured Souls have no natural spawn at all. They’re not on the Ice Maze’s spawn list, so the biome never produces one, and the only place they exist is the Pirate Shelter, where the structure file places 10 of them in the main chamber alongside a single Eel, an Evoker and the shelter’s Pillagers and Vindicators. Clear the room and the shelter stays clear.

A Tortured Soul inside the Shelter

The Pirate Shelter itself is the rarest structure in the mod, buried under the seabed of the Ice Maze with a round entrance shaft on the surface. Shelters generate in The Maelstrom as well, and those carry the same crew. If cheats are on, the locate command will point you at the nearest one.

They’re placed as ordinary monsters, which means they won’t be there on Peaceful, where the shelter’s Chests are the only thing waiting for you. On any other difficulty, assume all 10 are awake by the time you reach the bottom of the shaft.

Behavior

A Tortured Soul is a plain melee attacker. It walks at 0.2, which is slower than a sprinting player, notices targets from 24 blocks, and swings for 7 with a little extra knockback that shoves you back with each hit. It goes for players first, but it will also attack Villagers and any Illager it can reach, including the shelter’s own Pillagers and Vindicators.

Multiple Tortured Souls Stick Together

That last part matters, because the crew in the chamber isn’t on the same side. Souls and Illagers fight each other when they meet, and the Eel down there attacks Illagers too, so a shelter that’s been left alone for a while will have thinned its own guards. Let them, and count what’s left before you go in.

Why the Hits Land So Hard

Every Tortured Soul hit is checked against your Depth’s Resilience. With no Resilience at all, 4 hits in 5 are critical hits for triple damage, and your armor is treated as worth 20% of its value against them. A 7-damage swing becomes 21 most of the time through armor that’s barely there, which is how 2 or 3 Souls take a player in full Diamond from full to dead.

Resilience comes from the mod’s food and armor. A Sea Casserole from a Treasure Pouch gives Resilience III for 8 minutes, Sea Stew from the Frozen Chest or a ship’s treasure chest gives III for 5 minutes with Strength, and either drops the crit chance to about 56% and the multiplier to about 2.4 while letting your armor work at 44%. The Terrible and Abyssal armor sets add Resilience of their own.

The same rules run the other way. Souls take only 20% damage from a weapon with no Depth’s Fury, which turns 30 health into 150 as far as a Diamond Sword is concerned. A Terrible weapon roughly halves that, an Esca eaten beforehand helps a little more, and a Dagger of Greed hits them for what it says.

Weaknesses and Immunities

Splash Potions and Lingering Potions do nothing to a Tortured Soul. Its damage check throws away anything that arrives as a thrown Potion or an Area Effect Cloud, so a Splash Potion of Harming lands as a wet floor. It’s also immune to drowning, which is worth knowing in a structure with a flooded section and an Eel in it.

It counts as an Illager for enchantment purposes rather than an undead, so Smite does nothing extra and neither does Bane of Arthropods. Sharpness works, fire works, and Arrows work, which makes a Bow from the top of the shaft the safest opening you’ll get. It has 4 armor, which is a pair of Chainmail Leggings‘ worth and no more.

Drops

Nothing. The Tortured Soul has no loot table in the mod, so a kill drops no items at all, only 10 experience, and a full shelter’s worth is 100 experience for a great deal of trouble. They can’t be farmed, and there’s no Looting trick that changes that.

What they’re guarding is the point. The Pirate Shelter holds the Frozen Chest and its guaranteed Rune of the Storm, the last of the pirates’ Logbooks, and the richest set of Chests in the mod, and the single Evoker among the crew drops a Totem of Undying. The Souls are the cost, not the reward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Tortured Souls spawn?
›

Only inside the Pirate Shelter, where 10 are placed in the main chamber when it generates, in the Overworld’s Ice Maze and in The Maelstrom alike. They have no natural spawn in the biome, so they never turn up in the open water or the other structures, and a cleared shelter stays cleared.

Why do Tortured Souls hit so hard?
›

Their base damage is 7, but Aquamirae checks your Depth’s Resilience on every hit from its creatures. With none, 80% of hits are critical for triple damage and your armor only counts for 20%, so a swing lands as 21 through almost nothing. Sea Casserole or Sea Stew raise your Resilience and bring both numbers down.

Does Smite work on Tortured Souls?
›

No. Despite the name they aren’t undead, as the mod classes them as Illagers, so Smite adds nothing and Bane of Arthropods adds nothing either. Sharpness is the enchantment that helps, and a weapon with Depth’s Fury, like the Terrible Blade, helps far more than any enchantment does.

Why don’t my Splash Potions hurt them?
›

Because the Tortured Soul ignores any damage that comes from a thrown potion or a lingering cloud, which is written into its damage check. Harming, Poison, anything in a Splash Potion or Lingering Potion is discarded. Melee, Arrows and fire go through normally, and they take no drowning damage either.
