Ship Graveyard Echo is the material almost everything worth having in Aquamirae runs through, and it’s also the one you can’t go out and take. There’s no ore for it, no crafting recipe, and no trade. It only ever appears where the Shipbreaker has been, which means farming it is really a matter of learning to stand in the right place while a leviathan goes past.
What it buys is worth the trouble though.
Salvager Armor, which is what makes the Ice Maze survivable at all, is built out of Echoes, and so are several of the mod’s better weapons and the template that leads into the whole Abyssal tier. You’ll want a stack of them before you start crafting rather than after.
Obtaining
Echoes drop from Aquamirae’s own sea creatures, but only when the Shipbreaker is what killed them. Kill a Maw yourself and you’ll get nothing of the sort, as the drop is keyed specifically to the leviathan’s damage. So you never fight for the material directly, you just make sure something else is in its way.
That gives the whole job a rhythm. The Shipbreaker surges through the Ice Maze on a timer, wipes out everything near its head, and leaves the Echoes scattered along the line it travelled. The more creatures swimming in that line, the bigger your haul will be.
Enter the Ice Maze
The only place it happens
The Shipbreaker only spawns around a player who’s inside the Ice Maze, which is the Deep Frozen Ocean biome. Nothing happens anywhere else in the world, so this has to be done on site. The Maelstrom counts too, since that dimension is built from the same biome.
Wait for the Leviathan
Every 30 to 40 minutes

It arrives on its own after a cooldown of 30 minutes plus up to 10 more of random variance. If nobody is in the biome when that timer runs out it waits a minute and checks again, so the encounter can’t be missed by being elsewhere. Your warning is the screen starting to shake from 128 blocks out. Alternatively, fighting Captain Cornelia will also bring it in, as she summons it at 25% health.
Stay Clear of the Head
Instant death within 11 blocks
Everything living within 11 blocks of the head dies instantly, and that very much includes you. The body behind it won’t kill you, but it does shove anything within 11 blocks outward and upward, which can easily throw you into the part that does. Swim sideways out of the line rather than trying to outrun it.
Collect What It Leaves
Sweep the trail behind it
Once the head has gone past, work back along the trail and pick up what dropped. The Echo glows brightly enough to spot in dark water, though the leviathan covers a lot of ground at 12 blocks a second, so the drops end up spread over a long stretch. This is where an
Echo Compass earns its place.

How much you get depends entirely on which creatures were caught. Three of them always leave an Echo behind, and the other two are a gamble, so the ideal spot to be standing is somewhere thick with Maws and Anglerfish rather than Scuttlers.
| Creature | Echo Drop Chance |
|---|---|
| Maw | 100% |
| Anglerfish | 100% |
| Abyssal Scyphoid | 100% |
| Spinefish | 50% |
| Scuttler | 25% |
The kill zone deals the maximum damage the game can express, so armor, potions and Shields all count for nothing inside it. There’s no gear check to pass here, only distance. Harvest from behind the leviathan and never try to cross in front of its face.
Usage
The Echo is purely a crafting reagent, so there’s no right-click ability and nothing to trigger with it. Its value is entirely in what it lets you build, and it turns up in 10 separate recipes covering armor, weapons and the smithing chain. It also repairs most of the mod’s gear on an
Anvil.
The first thing to make with it is the
Echo Compass, and you’ll want that before anything else. It’s a
Compass with 4 Echoes around it, and it points at the nearest dropped Echo within 128 blocks, rechecking once a second. It’ll also track any Scuttler that has picked one up and swum off with it.
Without one, Echoes are genuinely easy to lose. They sink, the trail is long, and the water is dark, so a compass pays for itself on the very first pass after you make it. As the Shipbreaker kills creatures, Scuttlers will pick up the dropped Echoes, and run off with them, so this helps hunt them down.
Crafting Uses
This is where the demand adds up. Ten recipes want Echoes, and the ones you’ll care about most are the Salvager set and the Abyssal Upgrade Template, both of which are gateways rather than luxuries. Plan on farming several passes before you start spending.
| Item | Echoes | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Compass | 4 | Utility |
| Salvager Suit | 2 | Armor |
| Salvager Waders | 2 | Armor |
| Salvager Boots | 2 | Armor |
| Abyssal Upgrade Template | 4 | Smithing |
| Shatterblade | 2 | Weapon |
| Shatterspike | 2 | Weapon |
| Maze Rose | 4 | Weapon |
| Terrible Cleaver | 2 | Weapon |
| Terrible Chakram | 4 | Weapon |
Worth clearing up a common mix-up here, since the Terrible weapons don’t all behave the same way. The
Terrible Cleaver and the
Terrible Chakram both want Echoes in their recipes, while the
Terrible Blade uses an
Esca and the
Terrible Fang uses an
Angler Fang instead. So 2 of the 4 Terrible weapons need a Shipbreaker pass and 2 don’t.
Salvager Armor
The Salvager set is why most players start farming Echoes at all. A full suit refills your air the moment it empties and shuts off the freezing that otherwise drains you in the Ice Maze, which turns the deep sections from lethal into merely awkward. Three of its 4 pieces are crafted with Echoes.
The fourth piece, the
Salvager Helmet, can’t be crafted at all. That one only drops from the Ghost of Captain Cornelia, so the set can’t be finished without beating her at least once.
Weapons and the Abyssal Path
The
Shatterblade and
Shatterspike pair Echoes with Abyssal Amethyst and
Diamonds, and the
Maze Rose pairs 4 Echoes with 4
Abyssal Amethyst on its own. Those 3 are the Abyssal weapon set, and all of them sit at the top of the mod’s damage table.
The bigger sink is the Abyssal Upgrade Template. 4 Echoes and 4 Abyssal Amethyst turn a Terrible Upgrade Template into an Abyssal one, and since that template gets consumed on every armor piece and can’t be duplicated, a full set of Abyssal armor costs 16 Echoes in templates alone.
Tips
Make the
Echo Compass as soon as you can spare 4 Echoes, before anything else on the list. Everything after it gets easier once you can actually find what you dropped, and the alternative is swimming a 350 block trail in the dark hoping to spot a glow.
Position yourself rather than chasing. The leviathan moves at 12 blocks a second and its head is a death sentence, so the play is to let it pass and then work the trail behind it. Water thick with Maws, Anglerfish and Abyssal Scyphoids gives the richest hauls, since all 3 drop an Echo every time.

If you can get to The Maelstrom, farm there instead. A
Cracked Record played on a
Jukebox summons the Shipbreaker on demand down there, which turns a 30 minute wait into something you control. That trick doesn’t work anywhere in the Overworld.
Stock up in bulk before you start crafting anything. A full weapon and armor run burns through dozens of Echoes, and waiting out several natural spawns is slow, so it’s better to farm a few passes in one trip than to keep coming back.
Frequently Asked Questions
It drops when the Shipbreaker kills one of Aquamirae’s own sea creatures in the Ice Maze. There’s no way to craft or mine it, and killing those creatures yourself produces nothing, as the drop only fires on the leviathan’s damage. Let it pass, then collect what it left behind.
You couldn’t even if you wanted to, as the Shipbreaker has no health bar and no hitbox to damage. It’s a scripted event rather than a mob. The Echoes come from the smaller creatures its head runs over, so harvesting from behind it is the entire method.
The Maw, Anglerfish and Abyssal Scyphoid all leave one every time the Shipbreaker kills them. A Spinefish leaves one half the time and a Scuttler only a quarter of the time, so a stretch of water full of Maws is worth far more than one full of Scuttlers.
The Echo Compass, at 4 Echoes, because it makes every later trip pay better. After that go for Salvager Armor, since air and freezing protection are what let you stay down long enough to farm properly. The Abyssal Upgrade Template can wait until you have a real surplus.
