The Undead Knight is a rare mounted miniboss from Apotheosis, a Skeleton, Stray, or Bogged that rides a fast Skeleton Horse and fires empowered arrows at you. It hits harder than any normal archer, shrugs off knockback, and uses its mount to kite you across open ground while you struggle to close the gap. The real reason to hunt one is the loot, since roughly one in three Undead Knights carries a guaranteed Affix Item drop. Fight it in daylight so its horse burns and grounds it, block the arrows with a Shield, then corner the Knight and burst it down before it can reposition.
Location
You cannot summon the Undead Knight or track it to a structure. It appears naturally in the world, taking the place of a Skeleton, Stray, or Bogged that would have spawned anyway. Only about 1% of those mobs become the Knight, so most of your encounters happen by chance while you explore.
It only spawns on the Overworld surface, never in caves or enclosed spaces. It also ignores spawners, Spawn Eggs, and summoned mobs, so it always comes from a natural surface spawn. Look for it at night and in the early morning when Skeletons are still out.
The Undead Knight will not appear until you reach World Tier Frontier or higher. New worlds start at Haven, the first tier, where these minibosses are locked out entirely. Advancing your World Tier unlocks them, and higher tiers make the Knight both tougher and more rewarding, as explained in the Apothic Boss System Overview.
Behavior
Unlike a full Apothic Invader, the Undead Knight has no beacon beam, no spawn message, and no boss health bar. It simply shows up as a named mob sitting on a horse, so it is easy to underestimate. A named Skeleton on horseback is always a miniboss carrying real loot, not a normal wandering mob.
Normal Skeleton
Undead Knight
Attacks
The Undead Knight fights as an archer, carrying a Bow most of the time or occasionally a Crossbow, with arrows that deal 30% to 50% more damage than a normal Skeleton’s. A few unlucky hits can chew through unprotected health fast, so treat every volley as a serious threat.
On horseback it plays keep-away, circling and backpedaling to keep you in its firing line while staying out of melee reach. If you do catch it, or if its mount dies, it fights on foot and swings its Bow for weak melee damage. The danger is always the arrows, not the melee, so closing the distance safely is your main goal.
Special Mechanics
Mounted Archer
Rides a fast Skeleton Horse
The Knight spawns on a tamed Skeleton Horse that moves faster than normal, giving it the speed to kite you across open terrain. The horse also resists knockback, so you cannot easily shove the pair away to buy space. Grounding the Knight removes most of this mobility advantage.
Sun-Burning Steed
The horse burns in daylight
The Knight’s Skeleton Horse is cursed to catch fire in sunlight, which normal Skeleton Horses never do. Fight it in the open during the day and the horse burns to death on its own, dropping the Knight to the ground where it can no longer kite. The Knight itself wears a full helmet, so daylight will not burn the rider, only its mount.
Reinforced and Enchanted
Tougher gear, resists knockback
Beyond its arrows, the Knight gains 10 to 30 bonus max health and 50% knockback resistance, so your hits barely stagger it. It also wears a full armor set that scales with your World Tier, from chainmail and iron up to enchanted Netherite at Pinnacle, with individual pieces that can come enchanted on top.
Drops
The headline reward is a guaranteed Affix Item drop, carried by roughly one in three Undead Knights. When a Knight is empowered with one, that item always drops on death, and its rarity climbs at higher World Tiers.
Affix Items are randomly rolled weapons, tools, or armor pieces with Apotheosis affixes, named after the Knight that dropped them. See the Affix Items and Item Rarity System pages for how their power and rarity work. The Knight can also drop its Bow, Crossbow, or armor at a low chance, plus the usual Skeleton bones and arrows.
Bring a weapon enchanted with Looting to raise the chance of pulling the Knight’s extra equipment. The guaranteed Affix Item drops regardless of Looting, but its leftover gear does not.
Strategy
Your biggest edge is timing the fight for daylight in the open. Wait for the sun to rise, then engage from a spot with clear sky so the Skeleton Horse ignites and dies within seconds. Once the Knight is on foot it stops kiting, and with only 30 to 50 health it folds quickly to focused pressure.
A Shield is your best defensive tool because it fully blocks the Knight’s arrows while you advance. Raise it whenever you are not swinging, and duck behind trees, hills, or a few placed blocks when you need to heal. Do not count on knockback to create space, since its 50% resistance means most hits barely move it.
A strong Bow trades well, but the Knight’s arrows hit harder than a normal Skeleton’s, so avoid extended ranged duels. Close in with Iron or Diamond armor and Projectile Protection, then finish it fast rather than trading volleys.
If your Shield carries the Apotheosis enchantment Reflective Defenses, it bounces 15% of each blocked arrow’s damage back onto the Knight, passively chipping its health as you close the distance. Higher levels of the enchantment reflect an even larger share of the incoming damage.
FAQ
The Undead Knight is an Apothic Elite, a rare miniboss version of a Skeleton, Stray, or Bogged. It spawns riding a fast Skeleton Horse, fires empowered arrows, and often carries a guaranteed Affix Item drop. It is stronger and spongier than the mob it replaces.
You find one by exploring the Overworld surface at night once your World Tier is Frontier or higher. It replaces about 1% of naturally spawning Skeletons, Strays, and Bogged on the surface. You cannot summon it or locate it with any item, so it is a matter of chance while you travel.
You are almost certainly still on World Tier Haven, the starting tier, where Apothic Elites and Invaders are turned off. Progress your World Tier to Frontier or beyond and they begin appearing. They also only spawn on the surface, so caves and enclosed spaces never produce them.
No. Only about one in three Undead Knights is empowered with an Affix Item. When it does have one, though, that item is guaranteed to drop on death, and its rarity improves at higher World Tiers. The rest still drop their normal gear and Skeleton loot.
Fight it in daylight in the open so its Skeleton Horse burns and dies, grounding the Knight. Raise a Shield to block its arrows while you close the distance, then focus it down since it only has 30 to 50 health. Projectile Protection armor further softens its arrows.
No. It is an Apothic Elite, or miniboss, not a full Apothic Invader. It has no boss health bar, no beacon beam, and no spawn announcement. It appears quietly as a named mob on horseback, which is exactly why it is easy to walk into unprepared.
