Gems are crystalline items that slot into the sockets of Affix Items to provide powerful bonuses. Each gem delivers different effects depending on what type of equipment you socket it into: a gem that adds attack damage to a sword might reduce gravity on a chestplate or boost swim speed on boots.
Building a strong set of socketed gems is one of the most impactful ways to customize your gear in Apotheosis, and the power gap between a Cracked gem and a Perfect gem of the same type is enormous.
Purity
Every gem exists in six quality tiers called Purities, each named and color-coded: Cracked (gray), Chipped (green), Flawed (blue), Normal (purple), Flawless (orange), and Perfect (rainbow shimmer). Purity is the single factor that controls how strong a gem’s bonus is.
A Perfect gem can be several times stronger than the same gem at Cracked purity. Perfect gems also display an enchantment foil effect in your inventory, making them visually distinct.
The purity of gems you find depends directly on your active World Tier. In Haven, you almost exclusively find Cracked and Chipped gems. By the time you reach Summit, Normal purity becomes the most common drop, and you start seeing Flawless gems occasionally.
At Pinnacle, Flawless is the default, and Perfect gems drop regularly. Higher purities can also appear below their expected tier thanks to luck scaling, but only at Pinnacle do all six purities have meaningful drop weights.

Gems drop from four main sources: monster kills, chest loot, Apothic Structures, and Apothic Boss drops. When you kill a monster directly as a real player, there is a 4% chance for it to drop a gem.
Automation sources like machines or other non-player methods have a much smaller 0.5% drop rate, so farming gems by hand is significantly more efficient. Bosses have an elevated chance to drop gems compared to regular mobs.
Chest loot is the other main source. Any vanilla Minecraft chest has a 25% chance to contain a gem, while chests from other installed mods have a 20% chance. Twilight Forest structure chests also have a 20% chance.
Since purity scales with World Tier, farming chest loot at Pinnacle tier is the best way to accumulate high-purity gems. Dimension-restricted gems only appear in loot generated within their specific dimension.
Some players will have a smoother transition into the mod by locating Apothic Structures like towers, which have a very high chance of containing multiple Gems as well as a chest at the top with Affixed Items.
Socketing Gems
To socket a gem into an item, combine them at a Smithing Table with the equipment in the left slot and the gem in the right slot. The item must be an Affix Item with at least one open socket, and the gem must be compatible with that item type. Each gem’s tooltip lists the item categories it can be socketed into, such as Melee Weapons, Chestplates, or Mining Tools.
Note that swords and axes are treated as distinct subtypes: swords fall under light weapons and axes under heavy weapons, so a gem that applies to one may not apply the same bonus to the other. You add sockets to items using the Sigil of Socketing, also at the Smithing Table.
Some gems are marked as Unique, shown in red on their tooltip. A Unique gem can only appear once in any single item, so you cannot socket two copies of the same Unique gem into the same piece of equipment.
To remove gems from an item, combine the socketed item with a Sigil of Withdrawal in the Smithing Table. This returns both the item and all socketed gems, letting you rearrange or upgrade your gems without losing anything. The Sigil of Withdrawal is consumed in the process, so plan upgrades accordingly before spending one.

3Upgrading Purity
You can upgrade any gem to the next purity tier using the Gem Cutting Table. Upgrading costs Gem Dust, Rarity Materials, and a second gem of the same type and purity, which is consumed in the process.
The required materials escalate significantly as you go higher, so reaching Perfect purity is a long-term investment. A Perfect gem cannot be upgraded further.

Gem Dust comes from salvaging gems you don’t need. You can also crush gems by dropping an Anvil on them in the world, though the Salvaging Table is the more practical method once you have access to it.
Cracked gems yield 1 to 2 Gem Dust, while Perfect gems produce 5 to 10. Rarity Materials drop from Affix Item salvaging at the Salvaging Table, with higher-tier materials requiring higher rarity items to produce.

Apotheosis includes 23 gems divided by dimension availability. Core gems can drop anywhere in the world. Dimension-specific gems only drop within their respective dimension and have a minimum purity of Flawed, meaning you will never find a Cracked or Chipped copy of them.
Core Gems
Core gems drop in any dimension and are available from the start. They cover the full purity range from Cracked to Perfect and form the foundation of most gem builds.
Dimension-Restricted Gems
Overworld-exclusive gems start at Flawed purity and only appear in Overworld chest loot and mob drops. The Gem of the Earth amplifies existing Sharpness and Protection enchantments, the Gem of the Royal Family boosts all stats on helmets and has unique per-slot effects on other equipment, and the Gem of the Verdant Ruin provides Armor Shred on weapons alongside magic damage resistance on chestplates.
Nether gems also require Flawed or higher and are tied to the Nether dimension. The Gem of the Incandescent Inferno focuses on fire damage and berserker enchantments, the Gem of the Ravenous Blood Lord powers a life steal and blood-themed playstyle, and the Gem of the Molten Breach is an offensive piercing gem with a unique tool-conversion bonus at Flawless and above.
The End yields two gems, both requiring higher minimum purities than other dimension gems. The Endersurge Gem only appears at Flawless or Perfect and adds Sharpness levels to any item type it is socketed into. The Gem of the Mageslayer starts at Normal purity and provides protection shred on weapons alongside a shield-based Resistance bonus.
Twilight Forest gems require the Twilight Forest mod to be installed. The Gem of the Twilight Forest focuses on ore-finding utility and Armor Shred on chestplates, while the Gem of the Frozen Queen applies cold damage and freezing arrows alongside a unique fortification ability on chestplates.

Do not discard low-purity gems early in the game. Cracked and Chipped gems you find in Haven are the raw material for upgrading. Salvaging duplicates into Gem Dust and saving unique gems for the Gem Cutting Table is more efficient than simply using Cracked gems in your sockets and replacing them later.
Pay attention to which gems are Unique before socketing. If a gem is Unique, you cannot socket a second copy into the same item, even if you have multiple sockets available. This matters most for BiS builds where you want to stack the most powerful gems possible on a single piece of equipment.
Use a Sigil of Withdrawal rather than salvaging a gem-socketed item if you plan to keep either the item or the gems. Salvaging destroys the socketed gems along with the item, but a Sigil of Withdrawal returns both. Save your Sigils of Withdrawal for upgrades rather than using them speculatively, since each one requires Gem Dust, Gem-Fused Slate, Amethyst Shards, and Gunpowder to craft.
When choosing which gems to invest Gem Cutting Table resources into, experienced players strongly favor percentage-based bonuses over flat stat increases. Percentage bonuses scale against your total affix values; at high World Tiers where weapon and armor rolls can be enormous, a gem offering 50 to 70% to crit damage or attack damage can far outperform a flat bonus gem of the same purity. Flat bonuses are useful early on, but building toward percentage gems is the better long-term strategy.
Some gems are widely considered build-defining and are worth farming for specifically. The Gem of the Samurai and Gem of the Warlord pair naturally for crit-focused melee builds, offering percentage boosts to crit chance and crit damage respectively. The Brawler’s Gem is a common pick for armor slots given its combined attack speed and max health bonuses.
The Gem of the Earth and Endersurge Gem are standouts for enchantment-heavy setups, as both interact directly with existing enchantment levels. Deciding early which of these gems anchors your build makes it easier to direct your farming and upgrade materials efficiently rather than spreading resources across every gem type.
Dimension-locked gem farming is most efficient when you reach Pinnacle World Tier before grinding heavily in the Nether or End. The purity of gems you find scales with World Tier regardless of the dimension, so killing End mobs at Pinnacle gives far better Endersurge and Mageslayer gem purities than farming them at Summit.
