The 
Ballast Gem is a core socketing gem in Apotheosis that rewards players who commit to the frontline. Socket it into a Sword or 
Trident for flat Attack Damage, into a Chestplate or Leggings for Knockback Resistance that can exceed a full Netherite set at higher purities, or into a Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, or Shears for durability conservation.
Three different item types, three meaningful bonuses, all from one gem that spawns across every tier of the game. Unlike many of Apotheosis’s more powerful gems, the Ballast Gem is not Unique and has no World Tier or dimension requirement.
You can find it early, socket it into multiple pieces of gear simultaneously, and upgrade it all the way to Perfect purity over time. A Perfect Ballast Gem in your sword adds +10 flat Attack Damage, and a Perfect gem in your Chestplate grants 70% Knockback Resistance from a single socket.
Obtaining
The Ballast Gem has no crafting recipe. You find it through loot, monster kills, and boss drops. Because it spawns at the default weight of 100 across all World Tiers with no minimum purity restriction, it is one of the most common gems in the pool and appears regularly from the earliest stages of the game.
Once you have a Ballast Gem, you can increase its purity at the Gem Cutting Table by combining two identical gems with Gem Dust and Rarity Materials. Early upgrades require only Gem Dust and Common Materials, while reaching Perfect requires Rare or higher Materials. Ballast Gems you do not need can be salvaged at the Salvaging Table for 1-2 Gem Dust at Cracked purity, or 3-5 Gem Dust at Normal purity, feeding directly back into your upgrading pipeline.
Bonuses
The Ballast Gem grants a different bonus depending on which type of equipment you socket it into. All three bonuses scale with the gem’s Purity tier. The table below shows how each bonus looks at four key purity stages.

Light Weapons: Flat Attack Damage
Socketed into a Sword or Trident, the Ballast Gem adds flat Attack Damage as an ADD_VALUE bonus, meaning it applies before percentage multipliers from Affixes, enchantments, and other attribute bonuses.
The full purity progression is: Cracked +1, Chipped +2, Flawed +3.5, Normal +5, Flawless +7, Perfect +10. At Perfect purity, the bonus is comparable to adding several tiers of the Sharpness enchantment from a single socket, and it stacks with Sharpness rather than competing with it.
Bows do not benefit from this bonus. The Ballast Gem’s weapon slot applies only to the Light Weapon class, which covers Swords and Tridents exclusively. If you primarily use a Bow, consider pairing the Ballast Gem in armor instead and choosing a different gem for your ranged weapon.
Core Armor: Knockback Resistance
Socketed into a Chestplate or Leggings, the Ballast Gem adds flat Knockback Resistance. Knockback Resistance caps at 100% in vanilla Minecraft, and a full Netherite armor set provides 40% total across four pieces; a single Normal Ballast Gem already matches that 40% from one socket, and a Perfect gem provides 70%. The full progression is: Cracked 10%, Chipped 20%, Flawed 30%, Normal 40%, Flawless 50%, Perfect 70%.
Because both Chestplate and Leggings qualify for this bonus, you can socket Ballast Gems into both pieces and the bonuses add together. Two Perfect gems would contribute 140% total, which surpasses the cap and ensures you remain fully knockback-immune even when other resistance sources are temporarily lost. For builds that need to stay in melee range constantly, this makes the Ballast Gem one of the most impactful armor gems available.
Tools: Durability Conservation
Socketed into a Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, or Shears, the Ballast Gem causes the tool to ignore a percentage of every durability damage event it takes. A Perfect gem ignores 60% of each hit to durability, which means a Diamond Pickaxe that normally lasts 1,562 uses effectively extends to around 2,500 uses with this gem socketed.
The full progression is: Cracked 10%, Chipped 15%, Flawed 25%, Normal 35%, Flawless 45%, Perfect 60%. This bonus combines well with the Unbreaking enchantment, which gives each durability event a chance to be negated entirely, while the Ballast Gem reduces the damage of every event that does go through.
Using both together on a heavily-used tool produces a noticeably longer lifespan than either effect alone. For Netherite tools that already have high durability, the combination makes replacements a rare concern.

Yes. Use a Sigil of Withdrawal at the Salvaging Table to remove a socketed gem safely; the Sigil is consumed, but the gem is returned undamaged. Alternatively, salvaging the entire piece of gear destroys the item but returns any gems that were socketed in it.
No. The Ballast Gem is not flagged as Unique, so you can socket it into multiple pieces simultaneously and benefit from each bonus independently. This sets it apart from Unique gems like the Breach Gem or Samurai Gem, which each provide their bonus only once regardless of how many sockets they occupy.
Yes, but only the durability bonus applies to an Axe. Axes fall into the Tools category (Breaker class) in Apotheosis, so a socketed Ballast Gem will reduce how much durability the Axe loses from both chopping wood and hitting mobs. The Attack Damage bonus does not apply to Axes because they belong to the Breaker category rather than the Light Weapon category, which covers only Swords and Tridents.
