The Water Pump is a Desh-tier machine that draws water from a source block below it and stores it as a pressurized fluid, ready to pipe into other machines. Its main job is to keep an Oxygen Distributor or Oxygen Loader running indefinitely, so you never have to manually refill water on the Moon, Mars, or any other planet. Without it, you are constantly hauling buckets or relying on limited water supplies in space.

The pump runs on electricity and produces 50 millibuckets of water per tick, which far exceeds what even a maximum-size oxygen room needs. One Water Pump is enough to support multiple Oxygen Distributors simultaneously. Because it requires Desh Plates in its recipe, you will not build it until after your first Moon visit, making it one of your earliest mid-game infrastructure upgrades.

Obtaining

You craft the Water Pump at a Crafting Table using four Steel Plates, three Desh Plates, one Gas Tank, and one Hopper. Steel Plates come from pressing Steel Ingots in the Compressor, while Desh Plates are pressed from Desh Ingots mined on the Moon. The Gas Tank and Hopper are crafted separately before assembling the pump.

Usage

Placement

The Water Pump must sit directly above a water source block to function. The easiest setup is a one-by-three or two-by-two infinite water source: fill a two-by-two hole with water and it refreshes itself endlessly.

Place the pump on top of any one of those water blocks, and it will begin filling its internal tank as soon as power arrives. The pump faces a direction when placed, just like a furnace.

Water Source Required

The pump only works if the block directly below it contains a water source. A flowing water block does not count. If the pump is not producing water, check that the block below is a true source and not just a flow.

Right-click it to open the GUI, which shows the energy bar on the right and the water tank on the left. From here you can also configure which sides accept energy and which sides push water out, using the side-configuration panel.

Powering the Pump

The Water Pump consumes exactly 20 FE per tick, the same amount a Coal Generator produces, so one generator powers the pump with nothing to spare. Place a Coal Generator adjacent to the pump or run a Steel Cable from it, and it will receive power automatically once the generator has fuel.

The GUI of the Water Pump

The pump stores up to 50,000 FE in its internal buffer, so brief power interruptions will not stop water production immediately. It accepts energy at up to 250 FE per tick, so a Solar Panel charges the buffer quickly. Solar Panels are the recommended long-term upgrade from a Coal Generator, running indefinitely without fuel while the Moon’s sun shines consistently.

Keep the energy bar at least partially filled before heading off-planet so the system keeps running while you are away. If you mount Solar Panels on the outside roof of a sealed Moon base, use Cable Duct instead of regular Steel Cable to carry power through your walls. Cable Ducts are airtight blocks that pass energy without creating gaps in your structure, so your room’s seal stays intact and the oxygen supply keeps running.

Water Output

The Water Pump stores up to 5,000 mB of water in its internal tank and pushes it to adjacent machines automatically. Place an Oxygen Distributor or Oxygen Loader directly beside the pump and it will receive water from the tank on its own. You can also connect Desh Fluid Pipe to route water across longer distances or to multiple machines from one pump.

When using Fluid Pipes, use a wrench to configure the pipe node touching the Water Pump to extract mode and the node touching the receiving machine to insert mode. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons fluid stops moving even when pipes appear connected. The pipes default to a passive state and transfer nothing until both nodes are set correctly.

The pump generates 50 mB of water per tick, far exceeding what an Oxygen Distributor needs. Even a sealed room at the maximum size of 6,000 blocks only draws about 4 mB per tick. The tank stays nearly full during normal operation, letting the pump briefly supply machines even if the water source is temporarily disrupted.

Tips

Build your water infrastructure in the Overworld before launching. A Water Pump with a sealed infinite source is far easier to set up at home than on the Moon or Mars where water does not naturally exist. Once it is running and connected to your Oxygen Loader, you can refill Space Suit oxygen tanks for free as long as the generator has fuel.

One pump can supply multiple machines at once because its 50 mB/tick output exceeds the demand of several Oxygen Distributors combined. Run Fluid Pipes from the pump to branch the water to an Oxygen Distributor in your space station and an Oxygen Loader in your launch bay at the same time. The pump also shuts off automatically when its fluid tank is full, so there is no overflow and no need to keep it constantly powered.

If you are shipping water to a space base, the Water Pump itself cannot be carried mid-flight. Set up your pump in the Overworld or at a planet base where a water source is available. On the Moon there is no natural water, so you must bring an already-filled Oxygen Loader or Oxygen Distributor to survive the first landing, then build a proper pump-based system once you have established a foothold.

FAQ

Why is my Water Pump not producing water?

The two most common causes are a missing water source and no power. Check that the block directly below the pump is a water source, not a flowing water block. Then open the GUI and confirm the energy bar is filling. A single Coal Generator running on any fuel provides exactly enough power for the pump to run.

Can the Water Pump work on the Moon or other planets?

The pump requires a water source block below it, and water does not naturally exist on the Moon, Mars, or other Ad Astra planets. You would need to manually place and maintain a water source there, which is impractical. Most players keep the Water Pump in the Overworld and use Fluid Pipes or adjacent machines to distribute water before launching.

My water keeps freezing when I try to set up the pump inside my Moon base. How do I stop it?

Water freezes in areas the Oxygen Distributor has not yet oxygenated. Beyond oxygen, it also raises the area’s temperature, which stops water from freezing. Get your Oxygen Distributor running and let it fill the sealed room before placing your water source. Once the room is oxygenated, water will behave normally and the infinite source will hold.

Do I need to configure the sides of the Water Pump?

You can configure energy input and fluid output sides in the pump’s GUI, but adjacent machines like the Oxygen Distributor will receive water from the pump automatically when placed beside it. Side configuration is mainly useful when using Fluid Pipes to direct water to a specific side or to restrict which faces accept energy.

Why are my Fluid Pipes connected but not moving any water?

Fluid Pipes default to a passive state and do not transfer fluid until you configure them. Use a wrench on the pipe node directly adjacent to the Water Pump and set it to extract mode. Then use the wrench on the node at the receiving machine, such as the Oxygen Distributor, and set it to insert mode. Once both ends are configured, the pipes will begin moving water automatically.

How much power does the Water Pump use?

The Water Pump consumes 20 FE per tick, which matches exactly what a Coal Generator produces. Its internal energy buffer holds 50,000 FE, so it can keep running for a short time on stored power alone. A Solar Panel or larger generator will charge the buffer faster and keep it running without interruption.
