Ad Astra is a space exploration mod for Minecraft that takes you beyond Earth to visit five planets and moons across two solar systems, including the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, and the distant Glacio in the Proxima Centauri system. Starting with basic Iron and Coal, you'll build rockets, space suits, and machines to fuel an escalating tech progression that spans four rocket tiers. Each destination demands preparation: the right suit for the temperature, enough fuel for a return trip, and a sealed base stocked with oxygen. Along the way you'll encounter new ores exclusive to each planet, hostile alien mobs, and structures worth raiding for loot. The Moon is your first destination outside the Overworld in Ad Astra and the gateway to the rest of the mod’s solar system. It is the only place to find Desh, the extraterrestrial metal you need to build a Tier 2 Rocket and continue to Mars.

A Tier 1 Rocket launched from a Launch Pad in the Overworld takes you here through Earth Orbit, where you select the Moon from the planet screen. The Moon has no breathable atmosphere, a surface temperature of -173°C, and gravity at roughly one-sixth of Earth’s.

These three hazards hit you simultaneously the moment you land. Come prepared with a full Space Suit, and the Moon pays back handsomely with Desh, Ice Shards, and unique structures filled with loot.

Getting There

You need a Tier 1 Rocket placed on a Launch Pad and filled with Fuel to reach the Moon. Launching from the Overworld takes you through Earth Orbit first, where you select the Moon as your destination. You descend to the surface in a Lander.

Hold the space bar to fire the booster and slow your descent as you approach the ground. If you hit the surface too fast, the Lander explodes and destroys everything inside it, including your rocket and all your gear.

Start braking early, at around 70 blocks above the surface, and keep the booster firing until you touch down gently. After landing on the Moon, your Rocket will remain inside the Lander, and can be reclaimed, as well as any remaining fuel, which will allow you to return to the Overworld.

Don’t forget to bring extra fuel along, as well as an additional launch pad, or you can plan to find a Lunarian Village Blacksmith Chest that sometimes contains Launch Pads and Fuel Buckets.

Environment

Atmosphere

The Moon has no breathable atmosphere. Without a complete Space Suit across all four armor slots, you take continuous oxygen damage. The Space Suit Chestplate holds your oxygen supply and drains it every 12 ticks while you are in a vacuum.

If you are submerged in water, the drain rate doubles. Fill your suit at an Oxygen Loader before every trip and monitor the durability bar on the Chestplate, which represents remaining oxygen.

All Four Pieces Required

You must wear the Space Suit Helmet, Chestplate, Pants, and Boots simultaneously for oxygen protection to activate. Wearing only three pieces does not trigger the oxygen system, and you will take oxygen damage even if the Chestplate has a full tank.

The full Space Suit set is crafted from Steel Plates, Wool, a Glass Pane (helmet), Oxygen Gear, and a Gas Tank (chestplate). Steel is the bottleneck, so set up a Compressor to produce Steel Plates before planning your first Moon trip.

Temperature

The Moon’s surface temperature is -173°C, well below the safe range. Your standard Space Suit provides full cold protection, so you do not need the Netherite Space Suit for the Moon. That variant is required for high-heat environments like Venus and Mercury later in progression. Inside a fully sealed and oxygenated base, temperature damage stops entirely.

Gravity

Gravity on the Moon is roughly one-sixth of Earth’s. You jump considerably higher and fall much more slowly, and fall damage is proportionally reduced. Combat feels different because knockback sends mobs sailing long distances. A Gravity Normalizer installed inside a sealed base lets you set gravity anywhere from 0-G to 2-G for normal movement indoors.

Biomes

The entire Moon consists of a single biome: the Lunar Wastelands. Grey, crater-scarred terrain built from Moon Stone and Moon Sand stretches across the surface, with underground cave systems carving through the rock beneath. Both Corrupted Lunarians and Star Crawlers spawn throughout the biome at equal rates in groups of 1 to 3.

Resources

Desh is the primary reason to visit the Moon. You need Desh Ingots smelted from Moon Desh Ore to build a Tier 2 Rocket and progress to Mars. Desh Ore has a 50% chance to discard its drop when exposed to air, so mining in solid rock outperforms cave scavenging.

Moon Iron Ore provides an easy iron source without hauling it from the Overworld. Moon Ice Shard Ore clusters tightly around mid-depths, and Moon Cheese Ore covers the widest vertical range of any Moon ore, from Y 6 all the way to Y 192.

Desh

Moon Desh Ore spawns from Y -80 to Y 80 in veins of 9 with 9 attempts per chunk. It generates using a trapezoid distribution, meaning density peaks near Y 0 and tapers off toward the extremes.

Desh has the highest air discard chance of any Moon ore at 50%, so tunnel mining at Y 0 gives you the best yield per block broken. Smelt Raw Desh into Desh Ingots for Tier 2 crafting.

Other Ores

Moon Iron Ore generates in the largest veins on the Moon at size 11 with 10 per chunk, covering Y -24 to Y 56. Moon Ice Shard Ore occupies a narrow mid-depth band from Y -32 to Y 32, useful for producing Cryo Fuel later.

Moon Cheese Ore spans the widest range at Y 6 to Y 192 and has a 20% air discard chance, making it commonly visible in shallow cave ceilings and hillsides. Moon Soul Soil generates in patches throughout the terrain and works like Overworld Soul Sand for crafting Soul Torches.

Structures

Three structures generate on the Moon, all within the Lunar Wastelands biome. Lunarian Villages and Moon Dungeons are built underground, while Lunar Towers rise above the surface as visible landmarks.

Lunarian Village

Lunarian Villages generate underground at Y -20 with a spacing of 30 chunks and a minimum separation of 14 chunks. These are the Moon’s equivalent of Overworld Villages and home to Lunarians, passive NPCs who offer trades for Moon materials, Space Suit pieces, and Oxygen Gear.

Villages contain two types of loot chest. Blacksmith Chests are the most valuable and can contain everything you need to build a return rocket without mining. Finding one on your first visit can dramatically accelerate your Moon trip.

House chests contain more common supplies: Cheese (2-4), Iron Ingots (3-12), Desh Ingots (1-3), Desh Nuggets (3-12), Bread (2-4), Soul Torches (3-9), Coal (2-4), and Emeralds (1-2). Lunarian Villagers remain useful for trading even after you have looted the chests.

Lunar Tower

Lunar Towers are tall surface structures that generate with a spacing of 34 chunks and a minimum separation of 13 chunks. They share the same biome tag as Lunarian Villages, meaning they spawn in close proximity to villages and serve as above-ground landmarks.

On the otherwise flat and featureless Moon surface, Lunar Towers are the easiest structures to spot from a distance. There are multiple Chests inside the Lunar Towers, typically at the top containing more loot to obtain.

Navigation Landmark

If you spot a Lunar Tower on the horizon, head toward it and dig down nearby. Lunarian Villages generate underground in the same areas, so a tower almost always means a village below.

Moon Dungeon

Moon Dungeons are large underground complexes that generate at Y -40 with a spacing of 32 chunks and a minimum separation of 14 chunks. They consist of multiple interconnected rooms including a main chamber, boss room, library, storage rooms, and plant rooms, all built from a pool of 20 structure components.

Dungeons contain regular and large loot chests. Large chests have significantly better drops, including Diamonds, Gold, and Lapis that regular chests lack. Corrupted Lunarians patrol the dungeon corridors. Bring a Shield and food, and watch for their ranged Ice Spit attacks in tight hallways where dodging is difficult.

Mobs

Two hostile mobs spawn across the Lunar Wastelands at equal weight (100 each), appearing in groups of 1 to 3. Both spawn at any light level on the surface and in caves.

Corrupted Lunarian

The Corrupted Lunarian has 20 health and 2 melee damage. It is classified as Undead and uses both melee and ranged attacks. At range, it fires Ice Spit projectiles with a 15-block range and 1-second interval.

Corrupted Lunarian

When a target closes the distance, it switches to melee strikes at 1.2x movement speed. Corrupted Lunarians also target Villagers, Lunarian Wandering Traders, and Iron Golems on sight. Use elevation or cover to break their ranged line of sight before closing to melee.

Star Crawler

The Star Crawler has 40 health and 9 melee damage, making it significantly more dangerous than the Corrupted Lunarian. It uses only melee attacks at 0.8x movement speed and targets players on sight.

Star Crawlers move at a base speed of 0.4 (faster than Corrupted Lunarians at 0.3) but attack with a slower swing. Their high damage output means you should engage them with a shield or from range rather than trading hits early in your Moon visit.

Building a Base

Power

The Moon’s solar power rating of 24 makes it one of the best early locations for Solar Panel efficiency, generating 1.5 times the output of Earth (16) and double that of Mars (12). Place Solar Panels on the surface with an unobstructed sky view and connect them to your machines via Steel or Desh Cables.

Desh Cables have a higher transfer rate and are worth switching to once you have Desh Ingots to spare. Four Solar Panels is enough to power an Oxygen Distributor and Water Pump simultaneously. Moon Orbit produces 32 solar power, even higher than the surface.

Oxygen and Pressurization

The Oxygen Distributor fills an enclosed structure with breathable air, letting you remove your Space Suit indoors. It requires a completely sealed room with no gaps, a steady power supply, and water input from a Water Pump placed above a 2×2 infinite water source.

Each Distributor supports up to 6,000 blocks of enclosed space. Click “Show” in the Distributor’s GUI to confirm your room is highlighted and oxygen is circulating. Place a Water Pump above Water, connect it to the Oxygen Distributor via Desh Pipes, and power them all with Solar Panels or a Generator with Desh Cables.

Solving the Water Freeze Problem

Water placed on the Moon’s surface freezes within seconds, creating a bootstrapping problem: you need oxygen to keep water liquid, but you need water to generate oxygen.

Bring a pre-filled Large Gas Tank from the Overworld and load it directly into the Oxygen Distributor to pressurize the room first. Once pressurized, water placed inside stays liquid and your Water Pump can sustain the loop indefinitely.

When a pressurized structure loses its seal, an Air Vortex forms at the breach and pulls every entity inside toward the hole. Patch breaches immediately and keep your Space Suit accessible during construction near exterior walls.

Use Airlocks as doorways to enter and exit without breaking the pressurized seal. Cable Ducts should be used wherever cables pass through walls, since regular cables are not full blocks and will break the seal.

Tips

Bring a Ti 69 on your first visit. This handheld device reads local oxygen, temperature, and gravity in real time, letting you confirm whether a sealed area or cave pocket is safe before removing your helmet.

Use Soul Torches for lighting near ice. Regular torches work normally underground, but Soul Torches crafted from Moon Soul Soil will not melt Ice Shard Ore or ice blocks around your base.

The Moon’s low gravity changes combat significantly. Knockback sends enemies flying far, so a Knockback-enchanted sword keeps Corrupted Lunarians at distance. Star Crawlers deal 9 damage per hit, so engaging them from elevation with a bow is safer than trading melee blows early on.

Lunarian Wandering Traders appear on the Moon and accept Emeralds for rocket essentials including Launch Pads, Oxygen, Fuel, Soul Torches, and Water. Emeralds are common in both Dungeon and Village chests, so stockpile them during your first exploration run.

The Tier 1 Rover

Build a Tier 1 Rover once you have enough Desh. It reaches 50 km/h, carries two players, has an 18-slot inventory for hauling ore, and runs on Fuel. The Rover is especially useful on the Moon’s flat terrain for covering ground between structures without burning through your oxygen on foot.

Beds work on the Moon. You can sleep to skip the night cycle and set your spawn point. Respawn Anchors do not work.

FAQ

Do I need the Netherite Space Suit for the Moon?

No. The standard Space Suit handles both the Moon’s vacuum and its -173°C temperature. The Netherite Space Suit is designed for high-heat environments like Venus (464°C) and Mercury (167°C). Save your Netherite for those planets later in progression.

Can I breathe inside a Lunarian Village without my Space Suit?

No. Lunarians do not need oxygen and their villages have no built-in pressurization. Keep your full Space Suit equipped while exploring villages and dungeons, and only remove it inside a base you have personally oxygenated with an Oxygen Distributor.

How do I return to the Overworld from the Moon?

Place a Tier 1 Rocket on the Moon, place it on a Launch Pad, fill it with Fuel, and launch. You travel back through Moon Orbit and select Earth as your destination. Always craft a rocket and set up a Launch Pad at your Moon base before spending too long there, so you are never stranded.

Can I create a Space Station in Moon Orbit?

Yes. From the planet selection screen, you can create a Space Station in Moon Orbit. The recipe requires 64 Iron Plates, 32 Steel Ingots, 32 Desh Ingots, and 32 Desh Plates, so you need to mine Desh on the Moon before you can build one. Space Stations let you land from orbit without needing a separate surface base. Solar Panels in Moon Orbit generate at 32 solar power, even higher than the surface’s 24.

What can I craft with Desh?

Desh Ingots are the gateway to Tier 2 progression. You need them to build the Tier 2 Rocket at the NASA Workbench, the Tier 1 Rover, Desh Cables with a higher transfer rate than Steel, Desh Plates, Desh Blocks, and the Moon Orbit Space Station. Desh is also used in several machine recipes and is required alongside Steel for mid-tier infrastructure. Mining enough Desh on your first Moon visit to cover all of these is a good goal.
