Backstabbing Enchantment
Backstabbing is a Knife-exclusive Enchantment in Farmer’s Delight that rewards tactical positioning by dealing bonus damage when attacking enemies from behind. This combat Enchantment encourages flanking maneuvers and stealth approaches, making Knives viable combat tools when used with proper strategy.
Available in 3 levels, Backstabbing applies a damage multiplier that increases with each level, scaling from 1.4x at level I to 1.8x at level III. The Enchantment detects whether the attacker is positioned in a 240-degree arc behind the target, checking only horizontal angle while ignoring vertical position.
Classified as an Uncommon Enchantment, Backstabbing can be obtained through Enchanting Tables, Anvils, Enchanted Books, and Villager trading. Successful backstab attacks play the critical hit sound effect, providing audio feedback for tactical positioning.
Obtaining
Enchanting Table
Backstabbing appears as an Enchantment option when enchanting Knives at an Enchanting Table. Higher levels require more Bookshelves surrounding the table, with level III needing a near-maximum Bookshelf setup.
Enchanted Books
Backstabbing Enchanted Books can be found in various loot chests including dungeons, mineshafts, strongholds, and woodland mansions. They can also be obtained from fishing with a Luck of the Sea enchanted rod.
Librarian Villagers at Apprentice level or higher can offer Backstabbing Enchanted Books as trade options. As a non-treasure Enchantment, Backstabbing appears more frequently than treasure-only Enchantments like Mending or Frost Walker.
Anvil Combination
Two Knives with Backstabbing can be combined in an Anvil to create a higher-level Enchantment. Combining two Backstabbing I Knives produces Backstabbing II, while two Backstabbing II Knives produce Backstabbing III.
Applicable Items
Backstabbing can only be applied to Knives from Farmer’s Delight. The Enchantment is incompatible with swords, axes, and all other weapon types.
All Knife variants accept the Backstabbing Enchantment: Flint Knife, Iron Knife, Golden Knife, Diamond Knife, and Netherite Knife. The damage multiplier applies to each Knife’s base damage value.
Damage Calculation
Backstabbing multiplies the Knife’s base damage by a level-dependent factor. The formula uses a base multiplier of 1.2 plus 0.2 per Enchantment level.
Level I: 1.4x damage (40% bonus) | Level II: 1.6x damage (60% bonus) | Level III: 1.8x damage (80% bonus)
The multiplier applies to the final damage value after all other modifiers. For example, an Iron Knife dealing 3 damage (1.5 hearts) becomes 5.4 damage (2.7 hearts) with Backstabbing III when attacking from behind.
Backstabbing stacks with other damage sources like Sharpness, critical hits, and strength effects. Apply all base modifiers first, then multiply by the Backstabbing factor for the final damage value.
Positioning Requirements
Backstabbing activates when you attack enemies from behind in a wide arc. The enchantment triggers from a 240-degree zone behind the target, extending 120 degrees to each side from directly behind.
You don’t need to be perfectly centered behind the target. Attacks from the sides and rear angles all count as backstabs, giving you flexibility in positioning during combat.
Circle around enemies to reach the 240-degree backstab zone behind them. Directly behind provides maximum backstab reliability, while angles beyond 120 degrees from center trigger the bonus.
Vertical Position Ignored
The detection system only considers horizontal angle, completely ignoring vertical positioning. Attacking from above or below triggers backstabs as long as the horizontal angle meets the 120-degree threshold.
This means jumping attacks, ground-pound attacks, and elevated positions all work for backstabs if the attacker maintains correct horizontal positioning relative to the target’s facing direction.
Combat Applications
PvE Tactics
Backstabbing excels against mobs with predictable movement patterns. Circle around stationary mobs or those focused on other targets to position for backstab attacks.
Use the enchantment in farming situations where mobs cluster together. Attack from the edges of mob groups to catch enemies facing away, maximizing backstab opportunities while maintaining safe positioning.
PvP Strategy
Backstabbing rewards flanking maneuvers and mobility in player combat. Circle strafing, sprint attacks, and ambush positioning become key tactics when using backstab-enchanted knives.
The enchantment is less effective in direct confrontations where opponents maintain frontal awareness. Combine with mobility items like speed potions or elytra for better flanking opportunities.
Stealth Approaches
Sneaking up on mobs in caves, the Nether, or dark areas allows for optimal backstab positioning. The 80% damage bonus from Backstabbing III makes first-strike ambushes highly effective.
Combine invisibility effects with Backstabbing to approach enemies undetected. The surprise attack combined with backstab multiplier can eliminate high-health targets quickly.
Enchantment Compatibility
Backstabbing stacks with Sharpness, combining both damage bonuses for powerful knife builds. Apply Sharpness to increase base damage, then multiply the total by Backstabbing’s factor when attacking from behind.
The enchantment also works with Looting, allowing backstab-focused knife builds to maintain good drop rates from mob farms. Fire Aspect and Knockback can be applied alongside Backstabbing for additional combat effects.
Damage Comparison by Knife Tier
Backstabbing scales with each knife’s base damage, providing increasing returns for higher-tier knives. This table shows actual damage values with each Backstabbing level applied.
Flint Knife
Iron Knife
Golden Knife
Diamond Knife
Netherite Knife
A Diamond or Netherite Knife with Backstabbing III (7.2 damage) matches an unenchanted Diamond Sword (7 damage) when attacking from behind. Combined with Sharpness, backstab-enchanted knives become formidable combat weapons.

Successful backstab attacks play the critical hit sound effect. Listen for this audio feedback to confirm your positioning is correct and the damage bonus applied.
Yes, Backstabbing multiplies the final damage value after all other modifiers apply. Add Sharpness damage to the base knife damage first, then multiply by the Backstabbing factor when attacking from behind.
Backstabbing III provides an 80% damage bonus, multiplying damage by 1.8x. This is the maximum backstab multiplier, achieved at the enchantment’s highest level.
Backstabbing provides higher damage bonuses (up to 80%) but only from behind, while Sharpness gives consistent damage from any angle. Use both together for maximum effectiveness, or choose based on your combat style: Backstabbing for tactical positioning, Sharpness for direct confrontations.
